If it just looked like shit that's one thing.

But as a UI it flat out doesn't function half the time and many features are either incomplete, bugged, or broken.

Wait, what's wrong with Steam at 4K? It looks fine for me...or does this have something to do with Windows Scaling? That thing fucks up a lot of things.

I still don't really get it, but alright. Like if the story for GTAVI was suddently leaked on the internet by some disgruntled former writer I don't see how that would mean that GTA the series is dead. But I know nothing about Valve or Half Life so clearly I'm just missing something.

Take a peek at Episode 2's credits and look up how many of those people are still at Valve. Making actual games.

Now this is out, I'm sure there'll be a mountain of SP mods over the next few years, of varying quality.

That outline sounds great, the final scenes with the Borealis, the Dyson Sphere, G-man picking Alyx instead of Gordon sounds incredible.

Goddammit Valve, why did you kill this :'(

So do you think Valve responds or do they just let this go like everything they've done up to this point?
They will say nothing just like they always have.

As long as people are buying their keys and games nothing will change.

If you want things to change buy from GOG.

Gabe's response will be "Oh, we were ready to announce this game, but the entire story is now leaked. I guess we'll have to start over."

Because of this, I just subjected myself to G-Man speeches. They were genuinely great video game moments, moments like FFVIIs Aeris scene, things I'll never forget.

I mean it's not just the "Rise and Shine" scene, even ones like this at the start of ep2 (end of ep1?), just so creepy and so great.

It genuinely hurts that I won't get more G-Man.

PS I'm now imagining a HL3 where you're playing as Alyx and Gordon Freeman is now a grizzled freedom fighter in a battered old hazard suit... this will now never happen.

I'd rather stick pins in my eyeballs than give GOG my money again.

I'm honestly sad for this guy, he's clearly passionate and must have sucked spending 6 years writing descriptions for TV hats :/

Wait, what's wrong with Steam at 4K? It looks fine for me...or does this have something to do with Windows Scaling? That thing fucks up a lot of things.

It's not flagged as "High DPI aware" (like many Windows applications) and the default thing that Windows does is scale it up so it looks hideous. It works just fine for me and always has though, I don't know what complaints there are about actually using the UI. It's just blown up and looks fuzzy and nasty like all apps which are scaled by Windows instead of being natively capable of High DPI support.

One thing is clear. Marc fought for us. For many years. And now he feels with us. Enough to risk being sued just to give us some kind of closure.
Marc, you are my hero.

The last few times I've opened Neogaf it's so weird seeing this thread title just sitting there like it's no big deal lol.

yeah, it's surreal. after all these years. i'm oddly satisfied by it though. still sad we never got to play it.

another poster said it but i could imagine all those locations in my head...it was great. Thanks, Marc.

The last of the comic writers are probably next to go.

Not to mention whoever at Valve is wasting their time on steam machines.

Gabe: "I want to leave the System (Microsoft) and make games"
Also Gabe: "I am the System"

Godspeed.

Never logging into Steam again. Never playing CSGO again. Never playing DOTA2 again. Never pissing money away into their microfuckery again. Never spending a paycheck on a Steam sale again. We did this guys. We enabled Valve to become the lethargic, greedy, bloated piece of shit street peddler it has become by doing all of those things and more. We thought we were helping, that eventually Valve would put our hard earned money into something they promised, something we desperately wanted. And they played us. They've been playing us from the very moment they required Steam installation to play Half-Life 2. This was always the end game. Well I'm done. Plenty of other places to game, and I won't miss Steam and all of its snake oil bullshit for a single second.

Never again.

I gotta say, if this is the story we got after the wait I would've been kinda let down...

Eli was teasing that he was going to spill the beans on the whole thing, then he dies. The first person to acknowledge this mysterious man's existence.

Then in the sequel we get a brief glimpse of him again, taking Alyx away (teasing Alyx sequel/spinoff which would've been cool as hell TBf). But that's all the real continuation of the story, plus it's implied this mission to blow up the borealis achieves basically nothing so it feels to me the only noteworthy progression in that story is that Alyx is the GMans new "agent".

Marc comparing himself to Gordon confirms that he was probably one of only a few if not the only one who fought for the game to exist at all.

Holy shit...Read it all, that would have been so awesome

This is the final nail in the coffin for Half Life. Happy and sad emotions here, at least we have closure

I deep down knew there wouldn't be another HL but this confirms it

Gotta remember that episode 3 was supposed to happen much faster. I always expected actual revelations in a half life 3 that will never exist.

Fuck. That's pretty much the final nail in that coffin. :_(

One of my top 5 games of all time, even today I can so easily get lost in that world, and this is how it ends. At least with Metal Gear Solid we got MGS 4 which basically acted as a swan song for the series. For Half Life we get a blog post.

All the credit in the world to Marc for posting this and giving fans at least a little bit of closure.

That bit on the ship with teleportations and time/space stuff could've been related to the F-Stop mechanism that they invented in their directed design experiment sessions (post Ep2) but never used/saved for later.

Sad day boys

Fuck Gabe
Fuck Dota
Fuck Mobas

and fuck Valve

I think you mean fuck lootboxes, fuck getting 10% cut off of all user-resells of loot box items, fuck the people in Valve that are money hungry and obsessed with loot box game/services driven profits.

Fuck Valve?

Valve is dead.

As far as I'm concerned it's dead.

I wouldn't be surprised if Valve released Team Fortress 3 and Left 4 Dead 3 and they were built entirely around loot boxes.

Nobody at Valve is making games right now. They do QA patch work (that takes time) and work with primary studios they contract out to do the actual design work now.

That's my point right? Maybe somebody somewhere is working on a prototype once every four months but it ain't his really his day job and it sure as hell isnt half life

Marc comparing himself to Gordon confirms that he was probably one of only a few if not the only one who fought for the game to exist at all.
I mean from 2 on Half Life was basically his baby and he fought to the end even dealing with the ignomity of writing splash page lore for a MOBA and descriptions for hats to get his baby made.

Valve should have split into two companies long ago.

Valve maintains Steam, helps with publishing, software, etc...

Vavle Software makes games.

Like Bethesda the publisher and Bethesda Softworks the game developer.

Granted, that would be no guarantee that the software side would just continue making hats and Dota 2 skins forever but I think having them separate might have keep some of them more focused on actually making games.

Bethesda Softworks is the publisher. The developer is Bethesda Game Studios.

I can't imagine there being such little interest in Half-Life at Valve. Sure, it's an intimidating project but I bet every single new hire dreams of working on it. Who is keeping it from happening? Because I don't buy their "anyone can work on anything they want to" policy.

The time travel stuff from this write up seems like a fairly good candidate for F-Stop, still just guessing though

Wasn't it an open world space game? I'd be shocked if it didn't take place in the Half-Life universe.

I'm really glad Marc put this out. I feel I can move on now, since it seems as though the plot of Episode Three was everything I wanted.

That ending is absolutely spectacular. Perfect conclusion to everything the previous episodes set up. I can clearly imagine the smirk on the G-Man's face as he leaves Gordon behind.

I still don't really get it, but alright. Like if the story for GTAVI suddenly leaked on the internet I don't see how that would mean that GTA the series is dead. But I know nothing about Valve or Half Life so clearly I'm just missing something.
Imagine this:

-R* starts releasing games completely dissimilar to GTA (or even similar single-player stuff like Red Dead).

-the structure of R* and the way they develop games changes completely

-this goes on for years and years, way longer than the usual GTA drought, with zero indication that GTA VI is on the horizon

-Then after more years of nothing, key staff associated with GTA start to leave. Important creative people that shaped the identity of the franchise.

-all the while, the other stuff R* is releasing instead of GTA becomes wildly popular over the course of a decade and is clearly the new focus of the company. Also, the total lack of any actual info about GTA VI never changes

It's deader than dead. The people who made Half-Life are long gone and Valve is simply a way different company now than it was a decade ago.
