Secret of Mana Remake (PC/Vita/PS4, February 15th, 2018) Trailer

Why does anyone care what it looks like?

Legend of Mana was straight trash.Listen to the latest Retronauts, Perish and Kohler agree.

I think it's cool that they are actually making an old game playable, regardless of the graphical updates, available on a modern day system. My SNES has lasted a long time, but there will be a time I bet it won't.

Sword of Mana wasn't bad. My dad even played the shit out of it.

Every time I peel this onion there's another layer of nonsense. I don't know where to start.

Yeah, the graphics are a mixed bag. It doesn't look awful though. Improvements to the lighting would go a long way as it's currently really flat looking.

Dear god what have they done to this game......

This looks nothing like the game I remember from my childhood.

Couldn't they have just updated the 2d sprites and not created this.....monstrosity.

It's faithful to the general look but not to the atmosphere, level of detail, or quality. Look at those fucking stairs! And why don't the goblets cast any light? The stretched orbs on the pedestal... Gah. Outdoor areas seem to be faring decently, but I don't think we've seen any interiors that look good at all.

No, because they used another system as a base to create remakes from. Had they gone the route of 2D for any of the titles, I think additional remakes would have been unlikely.

At this rate, we are likely to get Seiken Densetsu 3 though at least.

IMO the poopy rocks look pretty accurate to what was there before, just in 3D.

I will say those orbs look a bit off due to perspective especially on the top ones but everything else looks almost exactly like it does in the original.

Maybe it's just me but I think a lot of people are faaaaaar too fond of that pixel art.

Biggest offender is that they seem to have misinterpreted the stained glass windows in the back. They look like protruding pillars in the remake

I think they still are windows, just this specific instance has them protruding in their own columns even in the original.

It just gets worse and worse. I can deal with the crude 3D but it just looks so flat, the interiors look especially bad. Secret of Mana deserved better than this.

I'm up for this. Put it on my Steam wishlist.

It doesn't replace the original nor does it need to, but I'll be interested to play a new take on it.

already asked but got no answer...

is there a retail release planned or is this PSN-only?

I want to think there will be a retail for the West done like Lost Sphear but it seems unlikely. For Lost Sphear it was available almost immediately on the SE store as an exclusive.

Hopefully it will be revealed at PAX.

Wonder why they didn't go with cel-shading. Would have looked better with this simple style.

Probably since they were building upon the former Vita/mobile only engine. I think they'll probably spruce things up for whenever they do the game after this oneeee.

Yikes, those interior shots of the water temple and cave are pretty underwhelming - that seems like pretty lazy texture work on the detailing and stairs (and the game is full of temples / dungeons with stairs, etc. - are they all gonna have the same issues?) And yeah, doing something with the lighting and shadows would give the screens some depth rather than looking so flat and washed-out.

If the main selling point for picking this up (if you've already played it before) is the updated graphics, and the graphics are only so-so... that really doesn't give much reason to pick it up.

I'll be really disappointed if they do a remake of SD3 and use the same engine - that game was absolutely gorgeous with its palette and level of detail, and having it reduced to graphics like this would be a real downgrade.

I mean for version vs. version purposes, it seems like we should be comparing to the Android (iOs too?) version as demonstrated earlier in the thread. It seems like that is being used as the reference and not the SNES version.

EDIT:

I'll echo that those outdoor shots look lush and I can't wait to see what that looks like in motion. Would love it if the trees have sway.

Looks fookin' shite.

Or more articulately, it looks anodyne, artless and lacking in character.

I'll be sticking with my SNES original and the SNES classic version. OR the Switch version if the ever gets translated ffs

I think the main point for picking it up is the graphics, gameplay overhaul, full voice (English and Japanese), and the music rearrangements.

They have indicated I think that if SD3 were to be remade in this fashion, it would probably be a bit prettier. At least, that's what I gleaned when they were considering Secret of Mana and SD3 when Adventures of Mana came out.

Everything I've seen so far looks great. What I really want now is some gameplay footage and to see the changes they made there.

If they finally translate SD3 and make it commercially available in the west but only in this form, I will be a little ticked off.

screens look ok but why the fuck does there have to massive character portraits along with the dialogue. that's seriously going to grate on my nerves

Well, it's either that, or not at all I suppose. I imagine there's also a lack of a desire to want to put these remakes on Switch which is why that got the 'collection' while remakes are PC/PS4/Vita. By the time SD3 comes out if it does, they'll probably drop the Vita from the equation.

You mean during the talk scenes? I thought it was pretty normal since it's all over stuff like Tales.

After those water temple shots I am ready to label this as the horrible cash grab travesty that it is. If only this werent one of my favorite games of all time, and if only it didnt have a lot of super important upgrades. Those things legitimize its sorry existence, since it may not have ever received attention again if it didnt make money. I may buy on PC after a price drop.

Personally speaking, not at all would be less annoying. I already have a naughty translated cart. That's not to say they shouldn't do it, I realise I don't speak for every(any?)one.

I'm kinda glad I never played this back in the day so don't get offended at the new artstyle. I'd imagine this is how I'd feel if they ever touched my beloved Spyro games.

Did Adventures of Mana have any extra content compared to the original Final Fantasy Adventure?

I'm pretty sure we shouldn't expect any major gameplay addition in this new remake. They probably just corrected the bugs of the original (or, more accurately, they probably just made sure they didn't re-create the bugs of the original when implementing the original's gameplay in this existing game engine).

If only they had done it in the gorgeous style of the box art.

As is, I much prefer the original graphics in their dated glory.

Looking forward to playing the game soon...
on the SNES classic.

I don't think so. It was basically just a 1:1 3D remake for Adventures of Mana. They didn't do much though to add onto it especially when compared to this but it's certainly a lot more accessible for that game at least compared to the GB version.

And while something that looked like this:

Would be gorgeous as a game, I can't help but think that it'd take them far too much manpower to execute.

i understand character portraits are standard now but having entire character models take up the screen is overkill imo. part of the charm of these games was seeing the story play out through the character models via the "limitations"

maybe it won't be so bad after playing awhile, i dunno

Psst...Retronauts also shat all over Sword of Mana on that podcast your reference(far moreso than they did Legend).

Mixed feelings about the graphics, it looks a bit flat/dull/cheap, for some reason I'm imagining this game in the form of DQXI style.

So, they are making gameplay changes?

Bought!

I love Secret of Mana, but the gameplay does need tweaking due to the magic abuse and hit detection issues.
