Secret of Mana Remake (PC/Vita/PS4, February 15th, 2018) Trailer

Not digging the graphics, not liking the framerate (unless this is due to the video?), not liking the attack animations.

As far as I'm concerned, I'll skip it.

I reject this artwork. My head canon is better. Bah. Bah I say. :-P

I mean, some of them have been pretty clearly redesigned. Fahna wasn't nearly that much of an exhibitionist in the original, and while her legs are a bit hard to see, it doesn't look like they had those sandals. Also, Luka... well, didn't have a walk cycle

*, but she didn't seem to be barefoot and actually had a full dress rather than a window frame for her legs.

Not sure how much I dig Primm or Popoi's voices in JP, either, I always imagined Primm sounding a little lower and rather more obviously willful (think, like, Kana Ueda doing Rin Tohsaka, that's like how I imagine Primm) and Popoi isn't nearly ambiguous enough - Popoi should sound more like Morgana from P5 than anything.

I'll be curious to see who's doing the EN voices.

* Edit: ah wait. she does, it's just barely ever used in the game itself.

Edit 2: Damn but those animations during the cut-ins are simple and the UI is just hilariously low-effort. Well, I guess you can only expect so much from repurposed mobage assets.

Damn the Four Heavenly Kings look edgy as fuck.

I like Dyluck's design on the other hand. It screams "hero who has a bad fate" like Dario from Chrono Cross or Reks from Final Fantasy XII.

Still interested, but wait-til-a-sale interested.

Wait, why would an Evermore remake be impossible?
It's not nearly as fondly remembered as Mana. FFVI or Chrono Trigger are far more likely to get remade in this style.
Then again, it shouldn't be too hard to adapt Evermore to this new 3D engine.

Thanatos looks far too goofy in that new artwork. The guy is one of the creepier villains of the SNES era (who can forget that boss theme?), not a bog-standard dark sorcerer wearing a silly skull mask.

In this video, they show new locations.

Is this the first time they've shown spells? It seems they don't freeze the game while being cast, which is a massive improvement, especially for multiplayer. Between this and the much improved fluidity, hit detection and hit reaction, this is a huge step up from the original, and I'm finding the constant arguing about visuals hilariously misguided.

I really wish the game wasn't even stopped when ring menus are open, that would make it straight up perfect. Hell, I own the original SNES carts of both Secret of Mana and Seiken 3, and I'd rebuy the latter if they just made menu rings and spells real-time.

The thing is, there's nothing behind that mask.

Camilla: You, sir, should unmask.
Stranger: Indeed?
Cassilda: Indeed it's time. We have all laid aside disguise but you.
Stranger: I wear no mask.
Camilla: (Terrified, aside to Cassilda.) No mask? No mask!

Secret of Evermore isn't a Japanese developed game and it was never released in Japan. The studio that developed it is gone and Square as it exists now has no reason whatsoever to remake it because there's no Japanese audience for it. We should be counting our blessings that this remake is making its way to the west and if we vote with our dollars enough MAYBE the inevitable SD3 remake makes its way here too, but honestly I'm not even holding my breath for that.

This is awesome and all, but I find it very hard to believe that SE will release a physical Vita cartridge in North America, in 2018...

I agree but I can't remember of Play-Asia putting up placeholders of products they aren't 100% sure that exist. Take the listing with a grain of salt but I'm hopeful that this is true.

I remember a lot of listings for things like Resident Evil PSP and Devil May Cry PSP that were announced, but never surfaced.

Just noticed something that bothers me. Lack of visual feedback on the character that shows your weapon charging from 0% to 100%. In the original game you blinked a little bit after attacking or dashing and now you have to either watch the meter or listen for the beep.

Also have they showed the characters dashing at all? One thing I always kind of hated in the original game was being locked into a straight line while dashing.

Yes, they actually changed the dashing entirely. You move faster freely with stamina draining slowly and then recharging from where it drains to when you let go. You can see some points in the videos where it happens. On the other hand the normal movement speed seems to have been made slower.

Actions never froze to allow magic spells in the original SoM. I looked at the video, and the remake seems to be handling magic exactly as the old game did, where everything but the caster and the target continue as they are.

Level 9 magic spells did freeze everything onscreen, though. But that was probably to accommodate their more spectacular effects and animations.

That's the video, mostly. PlayStation Access streamed the game from EGX at 1080p60.

Gameplay seems to be a straight 60fps but cutscenes have a mixture of mostly 30Hz character and camera 'animation' but the looping waterfall's animated at full rate.

The less said about some of the artwork and font, the better.

I ......I.......I........Love this, yes!

Two things....can the unnecessary mini map be removed, and can I disable the voices?
