Eh. Street Fighter is one of those franchises that can't really die at this point. Since it's basically synonymous with Esports. I will say that SF6 will probably go back to being multi-plat (Capcom didn't need Sony to make the game. Sony just upped the priority on their list) and with a actual focused release. Capcom knows at this point if they want the casual sales they need more than what they've been offering. So it's not a hard thing for them to fix.

When I realised Deep Down was in development by Capcom's Online Division I... didn't have high hopes for the project. It looked like a game I would have played but... it was kinda doomed from the start.

And comparing to other Capcom franchises, Dead Rising went 2.5 years between 3 and 4 with nary a word. Since it's been two years since DMC4SE, I think it's premature to declare anything just yet.

DR3 had major dlc expansions in the year following it's launch, plus a PC port. We also got crosslatform DR1-2 remasters in those interim years, it's not really comparable to DMC at all.

SB got a release just last year. It's been almost yearly. This year is the first year without a SB release since 2013. Before that we had 3 and Utage in 2010 and 2011. They're probably working on 5.

SB4 dramatically underperformed (over 50% drop from SB3) and Sumeragi did just as bad (also over a 50% drop from Utage). The Sanada spinoff straight up bombed (40k ltd) as did the HD Collection (61k ltd). I think it's very questionable if they're working on SB5 now or not given the radio silence since Sanada.

It seems like Capcom has been mismanaging their IPs/talent for a while now. We saw it all throughout the previous generation. Capcom isn't dying anytime soon but it they're not thriving either. The whole situation is pretty heartbreaking because Capcom is sitting on probably the biggest amount of recognizable IPs/characters out of any of the japanese developers but they can't seem to really do much with it.

They built a new engine, took three to four years to make the game, 700+ names in the credits, and at least a dozen companies outsourced to. It probably wasn't "cheap".

Missing your sales target by 500K is never a good thing. Also failing to have sales "legs" isn't a good thing either when the company expects it to sell another 2 million .

It's also a 1.5 million decline from RE 6 in the same time frame.

I really wish everyone would launch a Collective. A Capcom collective where indie game devs could have Capcom publish their games and eventually get access to lapsed Capcom IP seems like a dream. I mean, Capcom clearly isn't interested in Mega Man (or Dino Crisis), but I bet that there's an indie dev out there that could Sonic Mania the fuck out of the franchise.

There's other issues too, like how even a niche series like Ace Attorney shouldn't have 3 titles missing localization. Plus there's been more than one occasion (EX Troopers, possibly the Great Ace Attorney spinoffs) where the games were developed without international releases in mind and thus became economically impossible to localize.

SB3 to 4 saw a similar gap. Like I said I think it's premature to declare anything about the series future. SB relies heavily on asset reuse, and the amount of ground-up content per release is relatively small. It's possible SB5 wouldn't be a generational leap like SB3 or SB4, so costs wouldn't balloon like with those.

We'll see. If there's nothing announced by the end of next year, then I'll question the series' future.

RE2make is a special case, and they've talked about it a few times since the announcement. Capcom doesn't reveal titles before they're less than a year away from release (except SFV but that was a special case because of online betas), so unless RE2make is their late 2018 title we're a while off still. Not A Hero was at least officially delayed. Similarly, they mentioned before the announcement we would see RE7 soon, hence my comment.

All of those were spin-offs though, and in the cases of DGS there might be legal reasons or potential ones (which would be enough for something like DGS) hindering localizations.

I don't think deep down is actually happening, most of it's work will probably be rolled into other games.

Panta Rhei isn't happening and they'd be insane to even try to release it. Their are tons of ubiquitous engines out their for them to use and they aren't that expensive to license. Also if Monster Hunter is anything to go by, MT framework is still holding up well.

They should just repurpose it as Dragon's Dogma 2. I think that's what a lot (most ?) were hoping Capcom to develop in the first place anyway.

I don't know, imo Capcom's problems go way back before this gen.
From losing a lot of talent at the end of the 6th generation, And into the 7th where they invested a lot into new unsuccessful ip's and westernization last gen.
they have been of the downward spiral for years and it has cost them and they don't know what to do
Their Ip's this gen are poor, but this has been a long road.
The current success of the PS4 and Japanese games this generation is Capcom's perfect time to get back to where they were, but I don't think the people in charge has the talent to do so.

I'd imagine they'd benefit from incorporating more A and AA games into their line-up that can be made for far cheaper and potentially offer a bigger return. Sort of like that surprisingly stellar Strider game in 2014.

Work on some new 2D Mega Man games or perhaps even revive something like Battle Network. Maybe give Breath of Fire the retro-revival treatment and make a new one with 2D sprites. Experiment with some new adventure games like Ghost Trick. Stuff like all of these can be released on every platform under the sun.
