PewDiePie "What a f***ing n*****." out of frustration when his teammate dies.

He's using "gay" in its normal form there. PDP has said a lot of shitty things, this isn't one of them. Light's sexuality is ambiguous because he's such a manipulative asshole in the series that you can't actually take any of his relationships at face value. Some read into this and think he's gay/asexual/etc. because of it. (but it's a stretch, it's more a big ??? because it's not relevant to the story.)

Damn right it's not relevant. Not once is his sexual nature even hinted at, so assuming he's gay says more about the viewer than the actual source material. This is actually the first time I've heard anyone refer to Light as gay, which wouldn't be a problem except that it's a completely baseless claim. While I don't think this is necessarily a shitty thing to say, it does speak to PDP's overly simplistic yet aggressive and uneducated perspective.

Well, if I'm wrong, I'm wrong. I can't see myself ever referring to someone as "my gay man" though. Feels a little too much like Trump referring to his black supporters at a rally, you know?
This is more weird in the way fanfic people like to feel like they can take ownership over characters.

Please, that's exactly what you implied with the "keeping the word alive" nonsense.
So if black people stopped using it would all the racists stop calling us niggers?

How is black people saying nigga a "racial issue"? And who is it a "racial issue" for?

and how does anyone who think black people "keep the word alive" explain new slurs that have been created for black people that we obviously don't use any variation of?

Not just Americans. That is why the whole " he doesn't know what it means" shit, doesn't make sense. Here in the UK it is exactly the same as US.

That's another two million. I know it's known in Canada too, but I don't know if we keep stats along the same lines.

Great, so now the ad-pocalypse is going to get even worse with possible fair-use lawsuits thrown in. I still bet H3H3 and Boogie-whatever will continue to defend these racist shit heads while making a living on YouTube even worse for everyone, including themselves.

Does it really matter if Black people call themselves nigger though?

It's like how faggot is used by LGB people, it's a form of reclamation and the context is different when used by someone that isn't a part of that community

It's irrelevant. Again:

The conversation is coming up because people are trying to make claims like "black people say this to each other all the time" and "hispanics who grow up around blacks say this to each other all the time". Beyond the fact that PewDiePie isn't a member of black culture or particularly close to it - which should be argument enough - people are pointing out that he isn't using the reclaimed word. He's using the original insult and he's using it as an insult. He doesn't have the excuse that he thought it was okay, the specific form he was using is never okay.

This attempt to turn it into just a swear word is fucking bizarre.

I could believe that there's a generation of (white) kids who've grown up hearing it and using it as a general curse word in online games. But it's not the rest of us that needs to change to adapt to their experience. They need to realize that people use that word because it's so racially offensive. They need to grow up and adapt to the world that existed before them.

Same thing with using "gay" or "f****t" as general curse words.

You are correct. It wouldnt change much indeed.

Dont know what you may think of me but my intentions, naive as they may be, are well meant.

Yes i am very far and away from the things that happen in the US and all over the world and i have made mistakes myself, but i am learning and i am trying.

I don't even use the word, it's not in my vocabulary. How the hell does it get into someone else's and how does it become a pejorative without it being a reflection on someone's character?

Let's say, for the sake of argument, it doesn't actually reflect on his character negatively (it does, even if you wanna say he isn't racist) - it's indefensible. As in, even if it's just an accidental reflex, it's a terrible reflex and one that needs to be utterly purged from his and everyone else like him's vocabulary.

It matters insofar as people are- deep down- very concerned that black people have something to themselves that they cannot use with the same comparative lack of social consequence, because black ownership implies power, which freaks people the fuck out.

People don't make this argument so much or as hard with "fag" or "gay" or whatever else because- honestly- LGBT can be white, and we already know it's not kosher to step over white people's feelings.

I am fully aware that we are not a monolith but discussions about whether or not black people should or shouldn't say is a discussion black people and only get to participate in.
If you are not black, you're opinion about us using it is irrelevant.
My argument is that no one should police what some one wants other people to call them and if you have a black friend who doesnt like being called n-word regardless of race and another black person calls them the n word its okay to feel uncomfortable with that.

If your response to a white person saying racist shit is to turn around and blame black people you might be a racist your damn self. Just a heads up....

Gonna add my experience since there is some side discussion about how white people talk when black people aren't around.

When I was younger, in my teens (which was also a different era, the 90s) the group of people who would regularly say racist stuff were outcasts; they were the "hicks." They weren't a small group but far from the largest; more than once these people were beat down for their racism by both white kids and black kids. Some of these people became rather enlightened in their 20s and were apologetic about their behavior, others are still on facebook posting dog whistle racism.

Beyond that the occasional kid outside the hicks was the type to tell a racist joke here and there, and usually would get shit on for it. While there may have been small groups who snickered about racist jokes they would hide it when among larger groups, as being identified as racist was not a good thing.

I'm 39 now, and I haven't heard the word coming out of a white friend's mouth since I was maybe 21.

Granted I do live in Seattle, which has been quite progressive for a long time.

yeah it is incredible. a white person uses the word, in a pejorative fashion(he 'corrects' himself to say asshole...)... it is pretty cut and dry. The person was being racist. He could have salvaged this with a sincere apology - it couldn't explain why it came out so casually, but at least could reflect a desire to be better... but he didn't. There is no explaining this one away.

The amount of people willing to go out to bat for him is incredible. You can call this a shitty thing to do and still watch his content, that is your choice.

The way you describe it as a possible reflex reminds me of the Michael Richards incident, but at least he seemed pretty remorseful about it to the point where he did some soul searching.

This is always such a stupid fucking conversation because if you said "If you are fat and you have a fat friend you call "fatass" when you are fucking around it is inherently different than a skinny person calling a stranger fat or making a joke about fat people in a public forum" there would be literally ZERO questions about it. ZERO.

Every white person who acts confused by it is fucking lying. I say this as a white dude from the middle of fucking nowhere who grew up in a racist environment.

It's not even a little confusing. It's literally how everything else in life works.

All this dumb "If a tree falls in the forest and nobody hears it" handwringing is gross.

the greatest lie ever told is that black people have free license to say nigga around any other black person.

I guarantee you if I walked up to another black person in the street and called them a nigga, 5 times out of 10 we'll probably be throwing blows.

Yeah, I think that's some weird lazy shorthand white people who don't know any black people IRL perpetuated based on what they see on TV.

Greek dudes should not care about racial issues and choose to be left oblivious and ignorant.

Yes, that will definitely help...

Come on man.

You can care all you want, you just have no idea what you're talking about because you have no understanding of the cultural context for black people in America, so you are making yourself look pretty foolish making assertions about things you know nothing about.

Unless you are calling Chris Christie fat. Everyone can hop on that train.

Out of sheer curiosity, are there any other words in or near the league of the n-word?

Theoretically, if he screamed "Omg, you fucking cunt", would there have been a reaction?

As a disclaimer, I'm not comparing them, but as a guy who says cunt from time to time, I'm wondering what the reaction would've been like.

I avoid the word in most situations. I say it around like three friends who know me.

I legit can't think of any other slur or cuss word that has as much impact as that

'Nigger' is in a class of it's own because of it's historical connotation and the way it's still used aggressively by white supremacists against Black people.

While I don't think 'cunt' is offensive, it's certainly something one should never say in polite company.

If 'Nigger' is the top tier for racial slurs, 'cunt' is easily the strongest curse word.

As the above user has said, the n word is a unique case, and the main reason people it (if they're not racist) is that they somehow think "slavery was a long time ago". I'm still trying to wrap my head around people that use it as a joke.

Yeah, I agree completely with you guys (there's a reason we don't usually say the c-word or f-word when talking about these things), but wanted to check if anyone has any other experiences.

Let's say I was as huge as PDP, and I were in the same situation as him, and I screamed "You fucking cunt", and then someone came forward to me and said "Hey, that word really makes me sad to hear because of [these reasons]", I would've wanted to hear that so I can get the word out of my vocabulary.

Are you being serious? Cunt is not even anywhere near to being in the same league of offensiveness as what PDP said.

I think the only thing worse than saying the n-word is putting a link in a spoiler tag.

In all seriousness; I'd say it's the harshest at least in US culture because other ethnic slurs don't have as much history behind them, but they are still awful. If anything next in line is using an f-bomb to disparage an LGBTQ person.

That's ultimately the best response.

I really don't understand how anyone can possibly defend this.

Going on about how he's not an American and how he might not understand the full impact.

Yeah, maybe that's true on some level, but get the fuck out of here with that shit.

Even if that's the case, why is it in his vocabulary? Yeah, he's not an American, but he clearly knows that word and that's not the first time he has said it.

Anyone who doesn't immediately denounce someone who behaves in this manner is probably a piece of shit and I sincerely hope this affect his views or access in some way.

In reality, nothing will happen. His fans won't change and it probably won't affect him in any way.

It's because there's A LOT of history behind it that many people have willfully ignored. Doubly so for many European nations talking about "we don't have that sorta history so we really don't know it's offensive" bullshit when one looks in a history book they see their nations participation in the African Slave trade all the same. Folks can miss me with that shit.

No one who uses that word as any type of pejorative is ignorant of its meaning.

Well, the disclaimer was there.

As previously said; I don't believe there's a single word as bad as the n-word, but I was asking if anyone else has any experiences with any other word even being close to it.

Due to the historical context, maybe "Kike" gets kinda close. The word has to have a lasting historical negative meaning and has to demonize and entire subset of people.

MatPat and his wife are good people. They don't even dare cuss.

I feel bad because I used to rail against Game Theory for being stupid and campy and unscientific and I took it so personally and seriously. There are posts I made on this very forum decrying the dangers of such forced and vapid insight.

And I have since realized (watching some of his Undertale videos) that I didn't really know what they were intending to do and they are some of, if not the, most exemplary wonderful YouTubers gaming has to offer. I was so caught up on being superior that I failed to realize how... just... good natured they are. And that's worth so much and I feel really terrible for ever telling people to avoid that "stupid show."

How times have changed. Now PewDiePie and JonTron are out white supremacists. It really gives me some perspective of what I used to waste my energy opposing.

He's also a public figure who should know how to handle PR. Even if he didn't give the word the meaning it meant ...bla bla bla he should at least know how it's gonna come off, that it will not be taken lightly by the public and that it's not acceptable

Heck look at what happened to Paula Deen because of this word which she was caught saying DECADES ago but just by admitting that she said it she witnessed her own demise.

The difference is Paula Deen isn't an independent entertainer witha direct throughline to her audience like PDP is. Literally this has no effect on him if the people watching his videos don't stop watching. They're the ones that are too young and dumb to understand how fucked up their enabling of him is, and it's really really sad. They're the juniors in this thread that turn it into a graveyard. Unless THOSE guys stop giving him money, it won't affect him at all. This is why Youtube needs to step in themselves on shit like this finally.

It's the difference between internet gaming culture, and food network culture. Kids have no shame in supporting someone like that, adults that don't want to see themselves as racists will back off of someone like Paula Deen though, even if they are racist and just don't want to admit it.

Kyke is gaining on it

The racism part is very bad but PDP getting even more attention now is even worse.

PDP is the most successful YouTuber of our age. He is a millionaire celebrity. There is no way to give him "even more attention." It's already his entire livelihood.

If anything, people who previously didn't care about him now discussing how he is a tone-deaf white supremacist will he had for his brand.

So I say let him get more attention.

Honestly, he reminded me of every racist douche bag that I've come across on Xbox Live. With it popping out so casually like that, he fits right in with that crowd.
