PewDiePie "What a f***ing n*****." out of frustration when his teammate dies.

Excuse my ignorance but what is the difference between n***er and n***a and why is it considered “ok” (please note the “”) using the latter?

To me (but as i said i am ignorant) it always felt and meant the same.

It always felt like “got” becoming “gotta” or “going to” becoming “gonna”.

Dont get how the n word could become ok by just replacing the last 2 letters with A.

I mean sometimes it is even hard to distinguish between er and a.

If you're not black it's the same in all instances.
I don't care about whatever context people say they're using it in. If they're not black they are saying nigger each time.

I am not trying to police anyone. I am just saying dont expect white asian or any other race making the distinction between these 2 words. They essentially mean/sound the same.

They can use the word however they want, thats not my issue or something i am about to police, I am just having a difficulty of justifying all the comments about how different it is. And i only saying dont expect most people to identify that huge difference. Before this thread i really felt both words were insulting. Now i know better, but it still doesnt sound cool to me.
Then they best be ready to face consequences when they get caught saying it

This doesnt make sense to me in all honesty. Both words seem like they are absolutely related to each other so just exchanging some letters really feels like a poor excuse to me.

Its like me or the gay community, deciding that faggot being changed to fagga or whatever is somehow reframing a racial slur to a positive one...

I mean come on black people using that word, whether its theirs or not, does no good to them. At least not to the eyes of ignorant people like me and I assure you 99% of non black people out there dont listen to n***a any different than n***er.

It is bad.

To me it really feels more like an excuse to justify the use of the word than anything else.
You don't have to be black to know what context is. You don't need to be a linguistics expert to know that PDP said that with malice and vitriol.

Since they dont need an excuse why not use the original word then? Why the need for the "a" variant?

It's not really that hard.

But that's beside the point. Just because you don't understand the difference doesn't mean that a difference doesn't exist.

Just don't say the word.

The conversation is coming up because people are trying to make claims like "black people say this to each other all the time" and "hispanics who grow up around blacks say this to each other all the time". Beyond the fact that PewDiePie isn't a member of black culture or particularly close to it - which should be argument enough - people are pointing out that he isn't using the reclaimed word. He's using the original insult and he's using it as an insult. He doesn't have the excuse that he thought it was okay, the specific form he was using is never okay.

Since they dont need an excuse why not use the original word then? Why the need for the "a" variant?

To distance itself from the original word and its meaning, which lots of people still use. This shouldn't be hard to figure out. Consider that "gay" and "queer" are still used as insults despite efforts to reclaim them.

Who are you refering to? I am not talking of those other race people using the N word. I am talking about these people feeling uneasy and perplexed when black people choose to refer to each other like this. Sure it is their right. But it still feels weird to the rest of us who actually hate that word. And all i am saying is dont expect most people to distinguish that the A variant is a positive when black people refer to each other like that.

Sorry for the constant edits, i am just trying to keep up!

First off fuck Pewdiepie. Like i said i dont like the N word and i sure as hell aint trying to somehow justify pewdiepie uttering it.

My only point is that when i am around black people who talk like that to each other (again their right) i feel “off” dont know how to describe it, like I feel wrong just to be witnessing something like that. It is not meant as an insult (most of the times, others it sure as hell sounds like insult, especially when using before that word other stuff like “dumb” ) but it still seems like it.

Dont know how to properly convey my point maybe...

I am curious about why you care about us making the distinction? You're not black, the word doesn't having any bearing on your life one way or another.
Do you think it is unfair that non-black people can't say it free of consequence? Do you want to say it?

man, that look on his face after he says it, as he puts his head back and looks up. i see no regret. i see shock/amusement that he accidentally let it slip on cam.

I'm willing to bet that those of us outside of black culture actually have much weaker feelings about that word than black people do.

Anyway, it's not your territory. Why are you worrying about how black people use it?

What I fucking hate about today's climate, is that I have to rationalize and justify having fucking empathy.

"Haha, stop being such a faggot"
"Hey dude, you shouldn't say that"
"Why not? You know I'm not a homophobe"
"Yeah, but you're saying stuff that homophobic people use against gay people to hurt them. Just have some empathy"
"It doesn't matter what I say; it's the intent that matters. If they get hurt by something I said that didn't have any bad intent, then it's not my fault"

I've had this argument, verbatim, like five different times with five different people over five different kinds of slurs, and yet they all still react the same way: "Why is empathy more important than my right to say a word?"

I've seen this reasoning all over Swedish social media the last day. "He's not a racist, he's just saying fucked up shit, which the mainstream media is twisting to turn him into some nazi".

IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT HE IS, WHAT MATTERS IS WHAT HE DOES, AND NOW HE DID SAY THE FUCKING N-WORD ON A STREAM, IT'S NOT THAT HARD TO NOT SAY THE WORD FFS.

I feel if you really weren't homophobic, racist, bigoted or sexist then when confronted and asked to not use those words your response would be "oh sorry I'll stop" and not fucking argue over it. There is absolutely zero reasons to use those slurs except in the context of hurting others. This isn't difficult to get, but people try to make it so for disingenuous reasons.

With nigger and nigga. If a non black dude calls me either, then they are getting a slap. No white dude should say that shit.

With nigga said buy a black dude, it is a black guy saying brother. It is a fellow person that is taking a word that is used to call us subhuman and changing it for the good.

I'm black and straight and this example pretty really puts into context for me how weird/messed up people are. I've never once thought to myself why can't I use the word 'queer' lol. What is wrong with some people

Black people have no obligation to ignorant people like you to police their vocabulary.

the greatest lie ever told is that black people have free license to say nigga around any other black person.

I guarantee you if I walked up to another black person in the street and called them a nigga, 5 times out of 10 we'll probably be throwing blows.

This is why I don't make the distinction for people who aren't black.
He is saying nigga but he most certainly means nigger.

Don't feel like bumming myself out right now, but what is the black Pewdiepie fan's mental gymnastics around it?

- Just because he said the n-word doesn't mean he's racist.
- This was an isolated incident.
- It's a game, people say lot of things because the game is really intense.

I think all he was missing from the standard defenses we've seen was, "It's just a word".

I dont get the hostility. I am not trying to either offend any of you or police you. I am talking respectfully i believe. If every time i am trying to educate myself on matters like this, i meet hostile behavior it really doesnt help.

Some of you make me feel like i did something awful to you and my intend was nothing but insult...

In any case I apologize and i will try asking elsewhere.

How was my post hostile? I asked you questions.

New video.... "Stream Fails" ...critiquing other peoples fuckups... all nowhere near as bad as this latest fuckup... The balls on this guy!

Gross. What a poor idiot. He'll grow up and look back on this moment and shake his head.

Or he'll look back at this a month from now when Pewdiepie has another "isolated incident" and shake his head.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like I probably wouldn't be able to pull that off in public. Kinda feels like he's just overly comfortable with the word "gay".

Why are you so worried about what we call ourselves or each other?

It can feel weird because some black people dont like anyone regardless of race calling them the n word and some black people dont care either way. Its important to remember though that black people arent a monolith and like all humans different things will be acceptable and unacceptable to them.

You started off by admitting you were ignorant, and now discussing with the intent to argue rather than the intent to listen.

If people are telling you something that's contrary to what you ignorantly believed, maybe don't get so defensive when it's uncomfortable for you to process and understand?

Enzom21 wasn't being hostile. If you want to educate yourself then you should start by listening to other black people instead of arguing with them.

How was my post hostile? I asked you questions.

What was the question? Why i care? It is obvious why i care. Because the use of the word i feel it does damage. Because i feel keeping this word alive is dangerous.

But thats me, maybe i am feeling worried over this for nothing. Thats not ironic.

You have to admit it became toxic pretty fast. I was the first to call myself ignorant. It is not like i denied it. I honestly couldnt tell the difference. One felt like slang version of the other, both intended as insults for fun or not.

Why would you even say the word in any situation tho? I can understand being mad and blurting out a swear word, but "fucking nigger", really?

The excuse "he's from Europe" doesn't even make any sense, infact, it feels even more out of place.

I'm from Europe and I swear in English more than I do in my native language, but that word never crossed my mind in any situation.

There it is. It's black people's fault that people use it as a slur.
If all black people collectively got together and stopped using nigga do you think people would suddenly stop being racists and not say nigger any longer?

It can feel weird because some black people dont like anyone regardless of race calling them the n word and some black people dont care either way. Its important to remember though that black people arent a monolith and like all humans different things will be acceptable and unacceptable to them.

I am fully aware that we are not a monolith but discussions about whether or not black people should or shouldn't say is a discussion black people and only get to participate in.
If you are not black, you're opinion about us using it is irrelevant.

When I see my gay friends calling each other the f word affectionately, I never get jealous that I can't say it. It's not mine. I can't reclaim it for other people.

And we all asked you why you care, because it's not something that affects you. That isn't toxic. That's just replying to what you said.

Hey, you called yourself ignorant first, I was just following your lead.

Any hostility you experience can in part be explained through the frustration of explaining the same basic concept over and over again. This is not hard to figure out on your own with some Google and benefit of the doubt.

You're being very disingenuous and people can see through it. You post a question, people respond and none of the responses were toxic. You just can't handle being questioned by multiple people who are familiar and invested on the topic.

Maybe you're not mature enough to have the discussion at all?

Enzom21 wasn't being hostile. If you want to educate yourself then you should start by listening to other black people instead of arguing with them.

I did not argue with what they told me. I believe them when they say that one variant is not meant as a bad thing. I am only explaining that I believe very few people on this planet know about the distinction between these variants.

Thats all. I now know. But dont ask me why i care, it is obvious that i think it is doing damage. And i still think that because of the fact that a lot of people are as ignorant as i am. And yes we could read a book about it, but dont act like people who have no knowledge about this are some uneducated fools or that everybody is looking up to usage of racial slur variants.

Also, movies do a very very bad job about this.

Anyway thanks all for the heads up i will try and spread the knowledge when in company of others.

There it is. It's black people's fault that people use it as a slur.

I never said nor implied that its black people’s fault who use that word, that white people use it as well and are racists. I am sorry if you felt like this, but really you are looking for something that isnt there in my case at least.

Greek dude is very very concerned about black Americans using a word with each other. Very concerned.

Come on man, you're out of your element here.

When I see my gay friends calling each other the f word affectionately, I never get jealous that I can't say it. It's not mine. I can't reclaim it for other people.

That's because there's a latent need to "own" what people can and can't do and gay/nonhetero people don't have that specific contextual history.

Men (in general) do the same thing with the word bitch and throwing up arms when women use it affectionately amongst themselves but chafe when told they shouldn't use it. Because in many ways, Men feeling like they own women and what they can or can't do is similar to how white people feel like they own black people and what they can and can't do. There's a lot of generational, institutional, and subversive context underneath that would explain why men can't understand why it's okay for women to call each other bitches and the same for nigga/nigger w/ black folk.

And people understand contextual use of words, but this largely boils down to a feeling of entitlement and ownership.

He's using "gay" in its normal form there. PDP has said a lot of shitty things, this isn't one of them. Light's sexuality is ambiguous because he's such a manipulative asshole in the series that you can't actually take any of his relationships at face value. Some read into this and think he's gay/asexual/etc. because of it. (but it's a stretch, it's more a big ??? because it's not relevant to the story.)

There are about 40 million black Americans, if I'm not mistaken. I'd imagine most of them know the distinction at minimum (even if they may or may not accept it themselves).

Well, if I'm wrong, I'm wrong. I can't see myself ever referring to someone as "my gay man" though. Feels a little too much like Trump referring to his black supporters at a rally, you know?

Yes, that will definitely help...

So if black people stopped using it would all the racists stop calling us niggers?

How is black people saying nigga a "racial issue"? And who is it a "racial issue" for?

Not just Americans. That is why the whole " he doesn't know what it means" shit, doesn't make sense. Here in the UK it is exactly the same as US.
