PewDiePie calls someone a "fucking n****r" during PUBG livestream

No, he's definitely on intimate terms with that word. By saying he forgot he was streaming, he admits he uses it regularly when he thinks it's safe.

Dumb people keep saying it was a "heated gaming moment" but he said "nigger" with the composure of someone who hums it while brushing their teeth.

It's just fascinating that the first word to come on his mind was "n*****", instead of words like f*** or shit or damn. There is no relation whatsoever there. But the fact the very irrelevant n word replaced the other very relevant ones to express frustration by spouting out a random derogatory word just tells me he definitely uses it freely other times.

the n-word isn't just a "swear". It's a racially charged slur. It's discriminatory language. Language that was used to belittle and marginalise black people for centuries.

True, Americans did some truly horrible, despicable things in the past, also think about what happened to native Americans when the colonization started. Words are reminders of those things and can open up wounds, so I get how this might affect black people and even offend white ones that might want to leave the past behind...

Swearing is most commonly used as an exclamation. That's not how PDP used the n-word or its origin.

Well he did swear because something bad happened? So it was swearing for the sake of swearing, was it not?

I don't think it's totally honest to cast him out as an overt, militant racist as it is to put the focus on why people of this generation and this era continue to find this word okay to use in casual conversation. We can probably easiest presume Pewdiepie lives in a social circle where using this word casually is simply okay amongst friends. This is not to excuse his behavior, just to explain how it happened. My presumption is that like many before him, his guard was down and he let it out without thinking because this is a word that is not taboo to use amongst his friends. It is used facetiously, almost as an additional curse word, but one that is a little more "effective" just because of the reaction it gets in non-satirical contexts.

Is Pewdiepie racially sensitive? Clearly he is not. Is he overtly racist--someone that hopes and wishes for black people to be harmed, socially or physically? I don't think so and I don't think he's trying to hurt a black person by using the word. My guess is that, like with his nazi-infused content of the past, he simply uses these words in the same vein as South Park has with slurs and pejoratives--but without understanding the purpose those words serve there.

In other words, Pewdiepie is just not a good role model. I think of him, his approach, and content as tasteless and childish with no redeeming entertainment value of any kind. But, I also don't think of him as a racist with some sort of ulterior motive. Much more likely is the fact he's simply immature.

So how many times does PDP need to fuck up before you'll call him racist?

Yep, just because Pewdiepie doesn't want black people to die, doesn't mean he's not racist.

Racism has a ton of different levels, and they're all bad. Especially for someone who is supposed to be a rolemodel for millions of kids.

Yup. Like with repeated sexism arguments, people don't get that worldviews or beliefs can be institutionalised, inherent or perceived as "norm" so never questioned, even by people who would never consider themselves racist or sexist.

It's a never ending argument and the people who don't get that never seem to care

Are we just sure that the guy isn't doing it for relevance and controversy? I mean, sure he got 50 million subscribers, but his videos barely get past 3 or 4 of million views anymore due his shitty content. The after this he puts a video titled "stream fails" which has nothing to do with this incident, and that one is already at 1.4 million views in 7 hours.
His wsj incident also has a 20 million count and his videos about Jake Paul also are in the 12 to 16 million.

Not saying that he is not a racist, but he also may be using this to generate drama for more views. After all, we all know what happens to famous people when they do terrible things. Nothing.

Edited to make it clearer that I'm not defending him, but it's using that to create controversy + views == money

True, so we should all keep his feet to the fire imo.

Which is stupid to begin with since last time something like this happened earlier in the year, the Ad-pocalypse started and still is having an effect on everyone today

Advertisers are actually taking boycotts into consideration. This year has really helped put the awareness out there when it comes to pissed off consumers. Examples being Disney cutting PewDiePie and advertisers walking away from prime time spots on Fox.

Best thing that can happen is open and often discussion about this. I was a little offended by some people's suggestions of ignoring the situation. This topic and topics like this should be discussed and by everyone all over the world.

And in addition to the racism, he seems pretty nonchalant about making life hard to his fellow youtube creators. I've seen channels literally crumble due the adpocalypse he pretty much kickstarted and now this. shm.

Someone who isn't racist wouldn't take that path.

It's something with English that let's you swear non stop, so easily it isn't possible in any other language(at least any other I know of). "You guys" are swearing all the time, mostly with the F-word(which funny enough, you used to prove your point). The N-Word is used quite often by black guys on youtube or on tv though, it seems like they get a free pass because they indirectly defame themselves by doing so.

In the end swearing is just childish behavior but in case of pewdiepie it could have also been a publicity stunt to generate clicks..

What is this?

A non black person saying nigger isn't just them swearing, it is racist

It isn't just America that has a beyond racist past, hell most of if not all the world does.

Black people use nigga, to call each other bruva/ friend etc, this is used to take the word away from racists.

We don't know his intent, only that he is spewing racist slurs and makes genocide jokes. Why he does it bears no difference on the outcome of it influencing millions of children, while also fucking over minor Youtubers in the process. Racist or not, it's about the things he does, not why he does them.

I think she's saying that the "words are just words" argument falls flat because there is no real white equivalent to the N-word. Or something like that.

Yes! But let me try again;

A white person, in my opinion, shouldn't forgive this stuff because they arent affected directly for a slur, I don't think I can't think of any slur which is just meant for white people which wont carry any kind of privilege.

Since theres no equivalence, theres no culture about it, theres no knowledge about how a simple word could mean you being profiled by it, getting pursuit by it, use it to define you by it.

So, in that position, where you are privileged and you are not affected by anything, your perception of racism could be often be wrong or "light" and some stuff "dont be racist enough" to be called out for them. So yeah, the argument fails to deliver a real argument because you are not affected by a word, so of course, in that priviledged position, a word is just a word, by now, out of your bubble, life is different.

Look at this shit.

He's trying. He's trying to say ninja, but his mind goes straight to the n-word before he stops himself.

It's a fucking reflex.

To used to say it, he cant even manage the anger and he ended up stumbling, is pretty weird :/

Although he used to annoy the shit out of me I still liked the guy, I thought he was an alright dude who was smart enough to find his audience. Guess I got duped cuz I never would have guessed he was an asshole racist.

I've got an awful potty mouth when I'm losing online and off, but I've never shouted out that horrible name in frustration ever.

Your heart is in the right place, and I understand that you are disappointed at someone else using Christianity in a way you find disgusting, but at what point is brushing off detestable behaviour with "it's un-Christian" simply a "no true Scotsman" argument to paint Christianty in the best possible way? What authority makes you a "truer" Christian than him, especially considering the very common Christian belief that believing in Jesus does indeed make you better and worthier of being saved? If someone does charity work because they're Christian, and someone looks down on gay people because they're Christian, how is it impartial to add the first to Christianty's merits, but not the second to its faults?

Be careful not to turn Christianty into an affective death spiral that only ever allows you to add good things to its accretion disk and prevents any chance of objective evaluation.

Exactly as I wrote: I say "un-Christian" here regarding someone using a claim of Christian perspective justifying hatred and bigotry directed at others. That's a topic derided in both the writings of apostles and the primary accounts of fables told by Jesus. This is the theological backbone of Christianity, via the teachings of Jesus. This is no generic deflection of "what I don't like" like a no true Scotsman argument.

Look at this shit.

He's trying. He's trying to say ninja, but his mind goes straight to the n-word before he stops himself.

It's a fucking reflex.

That's an act. a cutesy little act to make viewers think "OMG HES GONNA SAY IT AGAIN!!"

if he ever does issue any sort of apology, nobody should believe it to be genuine.

You can just go ahead and say he's a racist.

That come wrong, sorry, stupid phone.

What it was meant to say it's "not saying that he is NOT a racist" because I think that's pretty clear for everybody. I mean the video is there to show it. I didn't want my post to be interpreted as excusing his actions or something like that, which not being a native speaker, could happen easily :)

Look at this shit.

He's trying. He's trying to say ninja, but his mind goes straight to the n-word before he stops himself.

I mean, yeah I thought it was obvious that it was a reflex. When I was 10, I spent a day at a friend's house with a "forward thinking parent" who didn't care if children cursed. So naturally, we cursed like sailors. When I went home later that night I stubbed my toe at the dinner table and yelled FUCK. If I hadn't had been cursing all day, I'd have never have said that in front of my parents who didn't hesitate to grab a switch mere seconds after I said that.

What the hell happend to you Pewds?

Me thinks he was always like this, it just that he probably his that horrible shit behind a veneer of new youtuber. Like someone said, he got comfortable.

That's an act. a cutesy little act to make viewers think "OMG HES GONNA SAY IT AGAIN!!"

if he ever does issue any sort of apology, nobody should believe it to be genuine.

Of course not. It's gonna be the nazi stuff all over again.

Okay, two things. Actually one thing. Not that saying that he's a racist but is just trying to skirt around the fact that he definitely, 100 percent, with a shadow of a doubt, straight up racist.

Since when did what you believe in your heart matter as to whether you are racist? You think I give a fuck whether you truly hate black people when you called me nigger? Like what?

That's an act. a cutesy little act to make viewers think "OMG HES GONNA SAY IT AGAIN!!"

if he ever does issue any sort of apology, nobody should believe it to be genuine.

I want him to make a heartfelt apology that comes across as genuine so every single one of the fuckboys who went "it's just a word bruh" or "nothing offensive about it lel" look dumb as all hell. He would also probably lose more subscribers by apologizing than not, because all these alt-right snowflakes would be disappointed the SJW's got to him.

offend white ones that might want to leave the past behind...

People who think using the N-word is racist don't want to leave the past behind. They know it's offensive because of its past use. The ones who want to pretend like there's no other context for it other than an insult are the ones who want to use it in every day conversation.

Since when did what you believe in your heart matter as to whether you are racist? You think I give a fuck whether you truly hate black people when you called me nigger? Like what?

You know what "it matters"? Because if it does EVERY single instance can be handwaved away till there's nothing but a word meaning nothing!
They still hate your guts because your skin color doesn't match theirs but they don't want to be called on it.

Oh don't worry there's still plenty of current reasons to not want to spout that word.
When you have children getting hanged for being a N-word to some other kids or people being shot because they happen to not need as much suntan...

It isn't just America that has a beyond racist past, hell most of if not all the world does.

Well I don't and the word isn't used where I come from at all. I haven't heard it in "real life" yet, not even from black people.

Black people use nigga, to call each other bruva/ friend etc, this is used to take the word away from racists.

That's something I was wondering about for some time now. Using it sounds like a horrible plan to get rid of a racist word like that, it also seems to make it harder to be offended by it when you throw it around casually. Children catch up words quickly and if they sound "cool" they will use them. Now if the child happens to be white then it is suddenly racist without even knowing it.

Well it's not like you guys can change it now as it really seems to be a word black people use a lot(from what I've heard from black streamers at least).

Its not even PewDiePie that pisses me off. What pisses me off is that my little brother is a fan of this punk ass bitch and many times I have heard him go through verbal abuse being called the n word monkey etc.. my brother is 12 years old and I get so mad that sometimes I feel liking fucking breaking the Xbox one. I don't care that I paid $500 for it. I don't want my 12 year old brother having to go through bs like that.

Yes I can't protect him from it, and the worst part is that there's very little I can do other than yelling at him to turn that bullshit off. So the people that casually use this word and casually racist online this is what 12 year olds have to go through every single day. I'm 23 years old so I don't give a crap about it but the fact that young people have to deal with this pisses me off.

Haven't you watched it? A guy does something he doesn't like and he says "you fucking n***er". He calls someone he has issue with a n-word.

It's a way to heal the word, I think. By using a word which you are directly affected by it, you are appropiating it and giving it a personal use and with time, it will be that group's "word"

Like for example "queer" which was born with malice thoughts but now is our word and we stand proud by it.

But, I also don't think of him as a racist with some sort of ulterior motive. Much more likely is the fact he's simply immature.

People who say Nigger arent cool with black people

- A black person

When your audience consists of millions of children, normalizing racist and prejudicial comments and viewpoints IS harmful.

These streamers live inside this bubble where they "don't think they're racist" because they're not actively assaulting Deandre Harris in a parking garage or preventing blacks from watching their streams because of their skin colour or because they're not actively throwing racist language out at people with active malice and prejudice.

What they fail to realize is that normalizing this language and reinforcing the misplaced perception that white men are inherently superior or victims of a witch hunt or that "this is something fun to joke about" is that they foster this mentality in their audience. You can't make a livelihood in streaming without being a role model as well. And their audience may very well act out violently - out of malice, fear or aggression - because of the mentality that PewDiePie's harmful words have infused within them.

You can't be a known commodity in the streaming community and then cry foul when you're held accountable to the same public standards of decency that apply to everyone else in entertainment media. This is NOT a double standard. And if a publisher wants to deprive you of the ability to earn revenue because they don't want to be associated with your "brand" of toxicity, more power to them.

This is what saddens me the most.

Me thinks he was always like this, it just that he probably his that horrible shit behind a veneer of new youtuber. Like someone said, he got comfortable.

Sorry about that, see clarification post above, was not the meaning of what I wanted to express.

Fucking Boogie. So desperate to keep the status quo that he'll defend anything.

Boogie would love if people were able to just use slurs. I'm sure he really wants to use homophobic slurs again without worrying about what people think about him.

He's a piece of shit.

Where do you live? Racism will never go away so the word will never go away, that is sadly a fact. If black people stopped saying nigga, white people will still racially abuse black people by using that hard R. It won't die out until the majority see the minority as a equal and many of that majority don't want that.

Being called a nigger by a none black person is far different. If you aren't black then you don't understand the reason why, then read up on the history of nearly every country and slavery.

Black person to black person " My nigga" . There is nothing aggressive or trying to call a person subhuman.

Racist to black person "Fuck off you nigger" aggressive abusive tone and outright ttrying to call the person subhuman because of their skin.

Also less of the "you guys" every black person is different, like every white person.

Stop fucking saying the phrase racist past. A fucking 8 year old kid was hanged and nearly killed by racists today. Just call it America's active racism.

Boogie would love if people were able to just use slurs. I'm sure he really wants to use homophobic slurs again without worrying about what people think about him.

He's a piece of shit.

Ah but don't fat shame, that's the limit.
If you do that it's personal and he will go Coldsteel on you!
