Why the hell are people expecting a bunch of 2018 announcements when the Direct is specifically for dating and detailing 2017 games?

Maybe not a bunch, especially from Nintendo, but their Direct descriptions always leave a lot of leeway.

Are people expecting Switch Smash to be a new game or Smash for Switch?
I expect a combination of the 3DS and Wii U maps, five new characters (inklings, ARMs rep, and three new 3rd party fighters) plus five new maps (one for each new character).

I think thats worth another full $60 purchase.

As long as we get the current roster plus some, I don't care what they call it

I mean, I'd love for it to be a port of the Wii U version with new stuff added and maybe a couple of new characters (so that my Amiibo don't go to waste), but I wonder how likely it is for it to be an actual sequel, rather than a port.

Are people expecting Switch Smash to be a new game or Smash for Switch?
New Entry.

Not going to be announced until E3. It's been 3 years since Smash Wii U. Melee to Brawl was 7 years. Brawl to Wii U was 6 years.

Unless they announce a port this week. It might be too late for a port.

Because the E3 Direct was a damn liar about focusing on 2017 releases.

mainly focused on what’s heading to Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS family systems over the next few months,

The key words are "mainly focused." When Nintendo says that they just mean the majority of time will be on what they specify but there's room for anything else.

That Sonic Forces thread reminded me

I predict there will be at least something about the game Wednesday

Please no....

If the new smash doesn't have Ryu, Bayo and Cloud I'm going to curse Sakurai. If he brings in Amaterasu instead I would be cool with it though.

I'm going to call that, with the new fighters being:

- Ice Climbers
- Inkling
- Spring Man
- Rabbid (with Mario + Rabbids alt costumes)
- Alola Pokemon Trainer
- Wolf

Probably not this direct, but for when it happens.

Pretty excited for the showing. Should be pretty good for a Nintendo direct.
Don't want to see anymore Mario since I'm 100% sold, but there's probably no avoiding that.
Really hope they muster up a really good Xenoblade trailer. I'm sure the game will be pretty good but they need a good showcase.

Really hoping to see either Platinum or FROM's games. I love PG to bits and I'd be super bummed if Switch misses out on Bayonetta action with PS4 and Xbox getting anything. Another Bayo 1+2 collection is fine as well even if it's sans Vanquish. I'd take The Wonderful 101 over any of those, though.
I've never played a Dark Souls games. Despite not enjoying BB too much, I'd be willing to give it another shot. I think being able to go through it might make getting into these other games a bit more seamless.

Are people expecting Switch Smash to be a new game or Smash for Switch?

It's very situational with the port so we aren't even sure what would Smash Switch ended up.

I meant there is a theory it was planned to be a port but ended up become next smash development, or so. Mainly because the rumor said that it was in the development ever since early 2016.

Are people expecting Switch Smash to be a new game or Smash for Switch?

For me, it depends on when it releases. The more time that has passed, the more new content I expect. Once we hit June 2018, I'm fully expecting Smash 4.5. Anything past 2018 I would expect to be entirely new.

Yeah, if there was a Switch port, I'd have expected it to be announced last year or maybe earlier this year, but the thing is that right now it feels a bit too late for a port and a bit too early for a new entry lol, so probably a port to keep the Switch software going and a new entry 3 years from now or so.

Yes but when you expect a bunch of 2018 BIG SURPRISES on both 3DS and Switch, you're asking to be laughed at. You know who I'm talking about!!!

Are people expecting Switch Smash to be a new game or Smash for Switch?
I'm not entirely sure if a Smash 4 Wii U port to Switch is likely.
I think it might be smart to have it be its own thing. It's been too long for just a port, 5 new characters, all the DLC, all the 3DS and Wii U stages, maybe alternate costumes and more modes.
I think smash can make a ton selling costumes for non Mii characters. Mii costumes is super dumb.

I don't think Sakurai is even working on Smash at this point.

If he's working on an original project ala Kid Icarus Uprising, that could lead credence to a Smash 4 Deluxe (like how we got MK8D while that team was working on ARMS), but I'd say that would throw a wrench into the idea of an all new full fledged Smash game coming out, unless Nintendo had the courage to get a new director to fill in his shoes.

Smash 4 Switch. Not expecting a new game for 2-3 years. I'm fine with a deluxe port with 3ds+Wii u content, with dlc characters and stages, and more characters like Ice Climbers, Wolf, Inkling, etc.

My predictions:

Super Mario Odyssey gameplay
FE Warriors story trailer with final character reveals (Thicc Tharja plz)
Xenoblade 2 release date trailer (Coming in 2017 worldwide)
Skyrim release date reveal
Rocket League release date reveal
Yoshi trailer with name reveal
Kirby trailer with name reveal
Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon
SMT Strange Journey 3DS release date reveal
Fire Emblem Switch teaser
One more surprise reveal

Perhaps I am a bit conservative on these predictions.

I don't see them showing off any of the new Metroid, Pokemon or Retro's game. Those will be the three big games of E3 2018 imo. If there's a surprise new game announcement at this Direct then I think it will more than likely be the Smash Bros port.

I do expect third party announcements though. This is just before TGS right? Maybe Monster Hunter 5 and some Japanese ports of the PS4/XBO games that are able to be downgraded to run on the system like Dark Souls and maybe the non mobile version of FFXV.

Sucks that I'm gonna miss this.

Wonder if they'll talk about what may be included in a future Switch 4.0 Update.

I just took off for that day since ill be in the middle of work, atleast I hope i do, my boss did see the request off sheet lol

All believable.

The mechanics of smash 4 are so great that I hope its just more characters and a better single player. Even without a good single player its already the best smash IMO. If it added a story mode it would be amazing.

Yeah, I simply cannot see Sakurai jumping right into another Smash after just finishing 4. The man needs his breaks from the series with how it keeps almost killing him!

Whatever this was for, I feel it's something brand-new.

Expecting a ton of this to be occupied by games we already know about (FE Warriors, Xenoblade 2, Mario Odyssey, Pokken, Octopath Traveler, Samus Returns, maybe Zelda DLC, Ultra Sun and Moon, Culdcept, maybe Yoshi or Kirby), and then maybe ~10-15 minutes on new stuff (FE Switch, Animal Crossing (?), Pikmin).

Like, 45 minutes sounds great, but it's too good to be true.

EDIT: Maybe another 5 minutes of Reggie's Art of War fan-fic again. Golly gee, I'd sure love that.

EDIT: Oh, Bayonetta and Wonderful 101 (or a sequel) ports too I guess.

I don't think anyone asking for Smash 4 expects it to be the only Smash game developed for Switch...

I want it and kind of expect it, it'd make a lot of sense. But they'd obviously release a brand new one like 3 years later.

My completely reasonable expectations

Metroid Dread I mean Samus Returns
I mean Dread
Zelda dlc meh
New 2D Zelda
New F Zero
New Animal Crossing
An update on that new mario game whatever
New Fire Emblem
New Mario Party that wont suck this time really we promise
Kid Icarus Uprising 2 Sakurai plz
Metroid Prime 4 and 5 cause why not
Pikmin 4 you promised Nintendo
Smash Switch port to print money
dlc sold separately lol
Luigis Mansion 3 cause Next level needs something to do and they did a damn good job last time
That new Retro Game - Fucking Donkey Kong 3!

Should be a good show.

It's just a random place holder name I made up. However, I do think Retro's new game will be a completely original IP.

And here I thought you knew something! I think it will be a new IP as well. I don't think it will be revealed on Thursday though, I feel like they need to save some announcements for next year. I could see them revealing it at The Game Awards or the January direct. I'm crossing my fingers for a small tease of Prime 4 as well, though I'm not particularly hopeful for that either. I'd settle for just knowing who is making it.

Does anyone have a list of what was revealed in last September's Direct? That might be a decent baseline for what to expect.

I want donkey Kong Kong.

Give me a Paper Donkey Kong rpg, or give me death!

That Sakurai toy hint is so cool. A mecha game in the style of Kid Icarus Uprising would be fabulous.

I absolutely want a Sakurai mech game, but him apparently only wanting the toy's rifle and not the toy itself to use for reference makes me think it won't be. D=
