Why is gaming getting so political in recent years

This is a guy being racist. What does this even have to do with gaming?

Also wtf? Why is racism seen as a political thing? Anyone that says that is basically looking to normalize and rationalize racism.

I mean I know in 2017 the republican party is the party of racism, but you know it's not supposed to work that way right with one party being a fucking racist party?

For most of us, we figured it was only a matter of time before this clear cut racist said something racist again.

Is there any doubt now that PewDiePie is a racist?

What bothers me most early on in this thread isnt the defending of PewDiePie, but the people dismissing it like, same old same old.

Why can't we do something to change this preset notion? What can we do to change things?

Have you seen his content? Comparing Pewdiepie's behavior to that of a teenager is an apt comparison and reflective of his primary audience. My contention is that he has never grown out of that mindset. With his success as a young adult, he's still never had a reason to really grow up. It doesn't matter when his birthday is if he never intellectually and emotionally developed beyond that.

For me, if he re-uses the word in his inevitable follow-up video in a defiant manner that is not just to clarify the word he said prior to including an apology, and then proceeds to defend his actions with the assertion he will or would do it again, that would be firmly indicative of someone with overt racist tendencies and sympathies. I do not think simply labeling people as "racist" and moving on is any sort of answer. It's not as important as understanding what the actual motivation for their words really is. If it comes from a place of ignorance, that is one thing to me. If it comes from a place of hatred, that is another. I don't feel satisfied relying on blanket terms to decide how I feel about a specific person's personality or actions or history.

Lol. This is why I cant even deal. Dude says fucking nigger infront of thousands of people, laughs, says no one cares, says it again and you still are apprehensive to call him a racist.

You think you are being fair and balanced but this is just the same stupid bullshit excuses. Calling him a racist is worse than him saying racist things.

We know where you stand at least. "Oh he's a child in spirit!!!" Give me a break. I can't even believe were suppose to take this seriously.

"it's only part of internet culture".

This is probably what bothers me the most out of all of this. Because a fucking shut-in being a racist doesn't surprise me. It's this culture of passing-the-buck we have where people within games (and comics, and movies, and tech, etc.) habitually blame some grander social construct for their own social failings.

"Pewdiepie just said that because he was mad. You can't change how people react when in the heat of the moment!" "Sexism and lack of representation isn't just a problem in the game industry, it's a problem everywhere!" "Moderating Steam forums just infringes on peoples' freedom of speech! This is just the culture!"

Videogames fought since the fucking 90's for the right to self-moderate. They said "we got this" and that dominated how games advertise, how they sell, and how they moderate their own content. But when it comes to the community, we're fine blaming these grander problems on these nebulous authorities that apparently just say "It is what it is" until they just get fixed on their own.

But Pewdiepie exists within our circle. As such he is our fucking responsibility. And it is on everyone within games to shut down everything he represents. It's on developers to say "Hey we're going to issue a takedown if you ever try and make money off our game." It's on players to ostracize him, ensure they don't contribute to his channel, and ensure their children or younger siblings know that what he says isn't okay and that he's a fucking asshole. It's on everyone to ensure his advertisers feel pressure to drop him immediately. It's on this community to fucking bury his career to the point where in 10 years, Buzzfeed's article on "15 Internet Celebrities Who Got Tossed in a Dumpster" prominently features his face.

God, I so love how white adults can be babied in such a way that even black children never get. Our kids get treated as adult as young as 8 years old, but a 27 year old white man gets his shitty racist behavior dismissed as just having a teenage mindset and thus excused.

Also, as it's already been said in this thread, he has a history of this shit. It's amazing that you take none of that into account but instead want to start the clock on whatever his response to this event is. Anything to not call someone a racist eh?

In this million page thread how do people still not get that you do not have to hate anyone or have a desire to like murder a group to be a racist/sexist/homophobe/transpobe/bigot in general. :/

God dammit. Not again.

Racism is NOT a "political opinion". Racism is NOT a "different viewpoint". People of color's humanity isn't up for fucking debate. Racism is just disgusting hatred.

There's no middle-ground. There's no both sides. And if you use a Racial Slur as a derogatory insult towards someone because they pissed you off in a video game you're a Racist.

This isn't hard to comprehend.

Because that would mean they would have to face up to their own racist behavior.

People don't seem to grasp that there's an entire system to hatred from language all the way to violence that allows it to perpetuate. It's a preemptive way to absolve themselves and others from playing into the system. I just wish people got that you can recover from saying something racist instead of acting like being called a racist is the same thing as a death sentence

Lol these people get it. They aren't dumb. They just want to argue from a place of bad faith cause they dont wanna acknowledge that maybe they are racist when they say these things.

We dont have to humour them. If you play devil's advocate for fucking PewDiePie you're probably a racist.

It's really sad. The community is really built in toxic ground. If these are the influential figures in gaming, then yeah, we are fucked.

It's not hard at all to live without being a piece of shit, but in social media and even here we have people that find it a concept so difficult to grasp. They really don't give a damn with the way they are staining the community.

People think racism is an on/off setting like a light switch. You're either not racist at all, or you're in the Ku Klux Klan.

Also, people need to stop thinking that every racist is going to be wearing a bed sheet and burning crosses. Plenty of them just look like your neighbor.

Interesting point, which I think is very true. I wouldn't portray PDP as an angry supremacist like we've seen recently, but the problem is him normalizing this kind of lowkey racism. Especially when his audience counts in the tens of millions.

At the 3 minute mark this mf'er said he doesn't put blame on PDP for the Nazi joke hurting ad revenue on YT. Instead he blames WSJ.

Why did I just end up giving this dumbass a view?

Who is he?

khaos kontrol's post history will tell you all you need to know I imagine

I never watched any of the streamers like PDP, JonTron, Boogie, Total Biscuit etc etc because I never found their product very interesting. It's actually astounding to me they kept all of this from their audience for so long. It seems only recently PDP made Nazi remarks, been a racist. Was there no hint of this from the beginning?

Has PDP started to lose subs yet?

I also find it fucking incredible that people would actually use alt accounts to post racist messages here. Seriously GTFO.

He's friends with and tour with legit open white supremacist. We call him a few special words in the black community

Alt-right's black friend who cosigns their bullshit.

I turned the video off as soon as I saw some 9/11 meme he randomly decided to post....

This is what we have to deal with....we get hate from even our own, and now we have this MF-er with a billion viewers dropping the n-word like its a regular degular curse word and his legion of stans are also implying its just a curse word...my God...we need a reset.
