Going to Hawaii bruhs!

Going back to Hawaii (2nd time)! Excited besides for damn NK issue but all good. Paradise awaits! Also bomb ass sushi, poke, Japanese udon/ramen, and of course beach life!

Staying at Kahala resort outside of waikiki. :)

We went there for my 30th birthday last year and loved it. It was my first time in Hawaii and it was everything I wanted it to be: chill beach life. Retirement goals for me. :)

Just had poke for the first time a couple months ago at a place in DC. So good! Enjoy!
 
I came back 2 months ago.

Went to Maui, Big Island, and Honolulu.

Queue up Jack's, "We need to go back" gif from Lost.

I miss it so much.
 
Amazing place. Don't walk on any cooled lava flows though – they could still be molten underneath the cooled exterior. I almost learned that the hard way as a kid when I walked on one, looked through a crack and saw red hot lava a few inches under my feet. I carefully retraced my steps and noticed my shoes had started to melt too. So yeah, stay away from those and have a good time. :)

Maui's really great, because there's a ton of variety in what you can do. If you want to lie on a beach, if you want to hike, if you want to shop, if you want small towns, if you want good restaurants, they're all there.

Personally, my favorite island is Kauai, because between Waimea Canyon and the Na Pali coast, the hiking and scenery are incredible. The north shore of Kauai is pretty much my ideal location, between the incredible beaches, the forests, and the hiking. Honestly, though, it's hard to dislike any of the islands. I can understand people wanting to get out of Waikiki (if you're not into cities), but Oahu's got a ton of amazing stuff as well.
 
Anyone flying there on Alaska Airlines don't drink the the free "Mai Tai" they offer on the flight. It's not actually a Mai Tai and it's disgusting. Wait til you get there and have the real deal.
 
Marukame Udon's lack of AC is a deal breaker for me. Especially with all those people in there. Has that changed or did you happen to be there at a time when it wasn't overly hot?

It was pretty warm inside but very tolerable, likely because September is a cooler month. We also got there around 10 to 10:30 am each time to beat the traffic and the heat so that played a factor as well.

Otherwise yeah it can be brutal esp with buncha body heat inside lol.

edit: Also I had the cold noodles, so that helped! It was amazing!
 
Eat the following:

Spam musabi
Poke
Shave ice
Loco moco

Do not drive County Road 340.
Do drive the road to Hana.
Do not go into the ocean if there is a wave advisory.
Do go into the ocean all other times, 24/7.

EDIT: Crap, I see OP is already back. Well, my advise still stands for anyone else visiting Hawai'i (Oahu or Maui, at least).

Me and my girlfriend are doing some traveling now, and I want to go to Hawaii in 2018 but she feels like it's a little expensive right now. I don't really feel that! The flights seem okay and obviously the hotels vary.


Does anyone have tips for keeping the price down going to Hawaii? Make it more presentable to the gf.

I'd recommend doing a costco package! Our first trip was via Costco and there are some great deals on there. Obviously you have to be a Costco member but likely you are or know someone!
 
Good to know. My wife and I are planning to go there for the first time in February. Anywhere between 10-14 days. What's the best way to experience it in your opinion? All-inclusive resort package or no? Which islands are the best? Budget is up to 10k.

I just got back from a trip there last month. Maui and Honolulu were the shit, but the big island was just shit. Still an awesome trip though. I gained like four pounds.

Do an AirBnB, we stayed in a private home on Maui halfway up the Haleakala volcano, could see both coasts from our view and it was magnificent. No more expensive than a hotel and we could buy groceries and cook our own meals for some of the time. Also no hotel surcharges, parking fees, crowds, etc.

Don't go to Mama's Fish House lol. It's good but jesus christ the prices.
 
Visit Hawaii regularly. My favorite place on earth. All the islands have their own charm. Don't be discouraged by those who may say Oahu is for tourists. That's absolute bullshit reason not to visit. It's like not visiting NYC because it's for tourist. Fuck.Outta.Here. Oahu has some of the best food, sites, beaches, museums, etc in all of Hawaii. Have a great time pal!
 
We were there couple of weeks ago; first time visitor so enjoyed it a lot. Mountains on the eastern side of Oahu are pretty dope; Now that I know, I see these hills in every other movie/tv show.

Yep, I own a timeshare on Waikiki Beach. We go every summer and we never get tired of it. One of my best purchases to date. Sometimes we mix it up and go to Maui, Kauai or the Big Island and all have their particular charms. We went for 10 days in July and we're planning the next trip already. Costco definitely is a pretty good option. We went on a short notice trip to Maui last year after my Dad passed and got a great rate for airfare (out of LAX), hotel (Sheraton), rental car, daily buffet breakfast and $200 in resort money for like $1400 a head.

Rent a condo with access to hotel facilities but cook yourself and pack light because you can do laundry. Rent a car for half the trip and commit to adventures. Stargazing and volcanoes national park on the big island. Na Pali trail on Kauai. Road to Hana is gorgeous but overrated.

If you're doing Maui, do the bike ride down Haleakala if you like riding bikes. 30+ miles of barely pedaling and it's awesome. Also, snorkeling in Molokini crater is great, too. Whatever you do, do NOT overbook events. You want to mix in days where you're just relaxing and enjoying the sights.

Growing up, I lived part time in Kona, and I could never get used to the humidity. That feeling when you first step out of the plane, the wall of humidity hits you like a slap to the face. lol

March might be too far out for booking? I just booked some from STL to different airports around hawaii and they're all about 4 hours to the west coast + 6 hours to hawaii
 
Glad there is a thread about this. The lady and I are heading to Oahu and Maui from Oct 5 to 15. Gonna be a blast. First time to Hawaii. I plan on driving around Oahu, going to the farmers market. Definitely visiting pearl harbor, diamond Head, and Waikiki.

I have no plans yet for Maui. Any recommendations for restaurant and other places to visit for both Oahu and Maui?

I went this this past June for a week, it was fantastic.

Book a Captain Andy boat trip up the Na Pali coast.
Do some hiking. Bring shoes that you don't care about if it's been rainy, the trails get real muddy.
There are a bunch of fantastic burger places that use grass fed beef from the island.
If you are around Koloa go to Pizzeta and get the Kalua Pork & Cheese pizza.
If they offer you a rental car upgrade to a convertible for free, TAKE IT (I'm still mad at my brother for this :p)

The Na Pali coast trail. There are two main hikes - one that can take you half a day and you see waterfalls, a couple of beaches, non stop amazing views and it's pretty easy. You can also do a longer version, which requires a permit for the overnight camping, and is a life changer if you're serious about it.


The Wimea canyon has some amazing hikes too, on the other end (horseshoe) of the Island, and at the top is the Alakai swamp, which is otherworldy, surreal and once you get a little way into the hike (which has a lot of boardwalk sections because it can be slippery) is incredible on a nice day. Hardly anyone does that hike and yet it's unlike anything else on earth.
 
Stop by the Hawaii Department of Taxation and punch those mother fuckers in the face for me. I've spent days waiting for them to pick up the phone.

I did this many, many years ago in my youth - the long version. Camped for two nights. Indeed, it is a life changing experience. The movie "A Perfect Getaway" takes place on the Na Pali coast trail. Silly slasher flick, but pretty interesting if you've ever done the hike.
