Mother (Darren Aronofsky) - early reviews from Venice

Not really similar at all besides some thematical elements

You sure? Haven't seen it but based on the advertising and everything it seems like that's what they're going for

This currently has an F cinemascore, 44% of audiences liked it on RT, and it looks like it lost its fresh certification. I told y'all people would be pissed at the miseleading marketing.

The marketing and advertising made people think a lot of things about this movie.

That's a shame because it's a really well made movie and it's actually does a good job at what it sets out to do.

A lot of people think a lot of things about Hawaii...

Anyway, yeah. The advertising sets the general mood. The film takes it from there and turns it up to 11 then breaks the amp and replaces it with a bigger one that goes to 15!

^that was dumb. Don't quote me.

I think of it as Aronofsky turning his crazy shit to 11, then mixing in David Lynch turned to 11.

I didn't really think it was that crazy, oddly enough. I thought Noah was a bit more off the walls.

But this was just another marketing campaign that revealed nothing about the film and drove it into a different direction.

I wonder if that's due to a decision by the director or a decision by the execs. Crimson Peak had a similar situation where it's advertised as horror when it's more of a suspense thriller that just happens to have ghosts.

Shock value for the sake of art is difficult to push for an audience just looking to be entertained. It's probably an issue similar to jump scares. I can shock you by ambushing you with that scene from Human Centipede 2 where the lady crushes that baby under the gas pedal of a car just like I can jumpscare you by sneaking up behind you and turning on a blender. Unless you were specifically looking for either experience, that aspect won't improve the quality of the film unless it makes sense for the rest of the plot outside of shock factor or symbolism, or you'll just have a confused WTF face. That's the only reason I can think of that audiences might not like this. It's also why I skipped Neon Demon but saw Starry Eyes even though Neon Demon is probably better made from a production standpoint.

What did I just watch? Whatever it was, it was intense and incredibly thrilling. JLaw was incredible.

time will be kind to this movie, it was a brilliant experience and would not have been if it had been marketed as what it was

Shit I thought it was some home invasion movie, too (The Strangers). Reading these spoilers turned me off even more than the misleading marketing.

thinking about seeing the movie, is it actually scary? horror? thriller? what is it actually?

It’s surrealism. I was constantly unnerved, but it isn’t a horror movie, it just uses some elements and tropes.

That said I think this movie can fuck with people hard.

I just saw the film, really enjoyed it. Beautiful movie, very original and intense. Also, it's not Rosemary's Baby.

Definitely not a film most people are going to like, very divisive.

Some choice quotes I overheard from the people exiting the theater with me:

"That was about the stupidest fucking thing I've ever seen." - Middle-aged man standing up in front of me right as lights went up

"Well, was it stupid or what? I wish I'd never come, what a waste of money!" - Older lady descending stairs behind me

"We just saw the worst movie" - Old lady on phone outside theater who sat 3 seats over from me and who's phone kept going off and kept slowly texting replies during the movie

The general mood I sensed from the audience while leaving was one of confusion and anger. So you know it's good.

I... am considering watching this, out of curiosity... but I don't know if I want to spend the money on a really confusing experience. But it really has my attention.

someone in my row actually walked out of the theater during the
raid
scene

It's understandable, I was bored throughout. It's funny reading people's ideas and theories is actually more enjoyable than the film itself.

I don't think it's that confusing if you have context. I might actually go see it a second time because it'll probably be a very different experience not trying to puzzle things togetherness while watching

That's a better reason to spend your money than some safe, by-the-numbers fluff.

I think it's a movie worth seeing, I just think a lot of people will not like it.

I think the main reason people won't like it is that it is obtuse and demands to be deconstructed. It's like the movie is leading you towards the center of a maze and then it ends and you're left to figure your own way out of it afterwards.

I also don't think the movie has a literal interpretation and people hate that. I don't think you're supposed to make sense of the story so much as try to understand what it is trying to say, or what it says to you.

People were walking out of my showing bewildered. I laughed to myself. What an experience. Didnt quite care for the pacing in parts but the whole was worth the experience for me.

This movie lost me very fucking fast. As soon as JLaw let a complete stranger woman whom she didnt know the name of talk yo her about sex life in front of the laundry machine, I said to myself this movie is complete bullshit.

None of these of people behave like English speaking Americans.

Damn...a 41% audience score on RT.

I enjoyed Aronofsky's movies, so obviously I'll be checking this out soon - hopefully tomorrow. I don't know what to expect, but the reception has me curious.

I really enjoyed this film. However, full disclosure I read the spoiler thread only enough to get the gist of the movie (I was on the fence about watching it because it sounded kind of boring so I wanted to go in knowing a bit about it.) and I'm actually glad I did because it made the movie way more enjoyable for me. Also once you get it, the movie really feels way on the nose with what it's doing, not like some art house movie where you can't tell what's going on or everything is up for interpretation. Also people in my theater hated this movie, every person complained including a 12 year old kid(not the target audience) who told his mother to never take him to the movies again. Me however, I think it is perhaps my favorite movie of the year so far. That said I don't feel the need to watch it again, it was a great experience but it did what it set out to do. I would recommend those who didn't get it to maybe give it another shot once you learn about what's really going on, I think for most people going in blind is a terrible idea, especially general audiences, I'm very surprised this was given a wide release.

So, just came back with friends.

They all hated it except for me, calling it:

-- Overwrought yet simultaneously empty
-- Lacking a message
-- Needless allegory
-- Bad allegory because it's not a 1:1 comparison with the subject matter
-- Pretentious

: among other things. I was the lone holdout in a sea of complaints.

I think my cred is shot with them. Now I'm gonna have to watch some fucking cheap horror schlock like Jigsaw as retribution, because they're going to hang "mother!" over my head forever.

Thanks GAF. xP

Kingsman comes out on Friday

Well, we all want to see Kingsman. I was the one most willing to give mother a chance even with the less than stellar critical consensus and shit audience consensus. So now, when something comes out that I don't want to see because it's obviously terrible, they're all gonna be like "You can't back out because we suffered through mother" and now I'm gonna have to do it.

Friends. How many of us have them?
