Spider-Man: Homecoming |OT| MCU's Sweet 16 - SPOILERS

I wish the film had a little more of that John Hughes feel I read about in the reviews. However, I liked the film a lot because the cast was perfect. I can't wait to see where they take the next film.

I want to see him swing around new york buildings not fucking running on parks and beachs and backyards ffs did they blew the budget on the ship or something?

We've already had two iterations of Spider-Man where he mastered his powers in a 5 minute montage. This is the youngest version of Peter we've seen on screen so while it would be cool if he was swinging through Manhattan 15 minutes into the movie it would undercut his growth in the MCU.

He was kicking a giant Ant man ass and kicking winter soldier ass in Civil War and you tellling me swinging in Manhatan would undercut his growth?

There's a certain type of fan that just wants to see the same shit done over and over again in the same way, for some reason. I, on the other hand, love what we got in SM:H.

Yeah, the dude got nervous climbing the Washington Monument. After his fight on the jet maybe Peter got over his fear of heights so he'll be in manhatan in the next movie.

In Civil War everyone was pulling their punches and Peter got by due to the element of surprise/Tony giving him a briefing on who he was gonna fight. All his victories were either team based or immediately undercut because he wasn't paying attention(see him webbing up winter soldier/Falcón yet getting taken out by red wing). Remove the help in HC and Peters performance is similar.

He was dragged away by Falcon's robot bird, drop kicked by Cap and slapped by Giant Man.
More like he got his ass kicked.

People need to watch that Civil War fight again because aside from webbing up Falcon/Bucky/Giant Man, which is the whole reason he was in that fight, Peter got his ass handed to him. And they were going easy on each other.

I didn't really like some of the casting or the movie did a poor job selling these takes. The guy playing Flash Thompson is short AF and doesn't fit the existing character defined in the comic. They did a lousy job of selling this version as well. Must be the writing cause I loved this actor in The Grand Budapest Hotel. Ned Leeds gets more screen time to flesh out this take on the character but it falls flat for me. I always wanted a big screen hobgoblin but I really don't want to see this guy in the suit and on a glider, that would be some master tier brainwashing. He seemed to be more of a punisher sidekick. MJ was just there channelling weird chick from the breakfast club. Again hardly any screen time to really sell this take. If you are going to go this route and change the basics of characters that have existed for decades across multiple types of media you have to give the actor something to work with. I think that all the time wasted with Tony and the suit would have been better spent fleshing out the new takes on these characters. Would have liked to see more of Prowler. I expected him to have a larger role based on earlier reactions of him stealing the movie with what ended up as 3-4 lines of dialogue. I didn't love Holland as Spider-Man. Not enough quips. His Peter Parker was too excitable and rambling all the time. He was like Unbreakable Kimmy Spider-Man turned up to 11000.
Action set pieces were weak as well. Even Spider-Man 1 had more satisfying action. It was a 6.5/10 movie for me.

Saying Peter got worked in Civil War feels like a bit much. More like he held his own while fighting a bunch of heroes he didn't really wanna be fighting anyways, and only really got in his own way. He effortlessly caught a haymaker from Bucky (something even Steve struggles with) and webbed him and Sam up, but got caught quipping without paying attention (Spidey sense, Peter???); he got in quite a few solid hits on Giant-Man and came up with the plan to put him down before getting knocked out by one of Scott's flailing arms because he was too busy fanboying over Tony and Rhodey's tag team; only Steve really beat him straight up. And if we can acknowledge that the Avengers were pulling their punches, cause friends, we can admit Peter wasn't exactly bringing his A game either, since he was facing his idols.

He's certainly got a way to go judging from Civil War and Homecoming (Vulture DID beat his ass), but that's only because we know how great he can and will be, even at his age. He hasn't been some washed up wannabe.

It's not that he's washed up, but he's still learning how to actually fight and use all of his abilities to his advantage. His performance in Civil War doesn't negate the fact that he's still a noob in Homecoming.

Well, duh. The passage you quoted from me admits this. I was more referring to all the "HA, PETER TOTALLY GOT WRECKED IN CIVIL WAR" comments. That isn't what happened.

Homecoming is probably my favorite MCU film - great characters, great humor, great color, great villain, great costumes. However, I 100% agree that the action is disappointing and a big step down from 1-3. It's amazing how old those Raimi films are, and MCU still can't compete when it comes to action.

Civil War and Winter Soldier are the only MCU with legitimately "good" action, IMO.

Honestly, the ASM movies - especially the first - set the bar for Spider-Man action in my mind. It was the one thing they did really well.

You don't think The Avengers has legit good action though?

I love how they revealed MJ in this, and although I'm Nostalgic for the red hair, I won't complain
PLUS HAIR DYE! HAHA!
, no seriously, the dynamic they seem to have set up with the two of them is so fun. It's adorable. Seriously though I didn't even make the connection til the end and I'm glad it didn't get spoiled for me.

I mean, if you change the established look of a character, her entire behavior, and then casually drop her name at the end so that people know who it's supposed to be, I think it's fair to state it's a piss poor job.

She was fine as an original character and it just felt shoehorned and cringe worthy. Kinda like that Robin name drop in TDK rises. But worse.

So imma ask this for the 100th time

What was changed about MJ with Michelle beyond hair, skin color, and I guess her looks?

Her character behavior is much of the same. Beyond being a wannabe model/actress/party girl, her as an actual character is the same

Saw this last night and it was meh.

Come back Raimi pls !!!

This movie was made for teenagers it was not for me, lame comedie, lame villain AGAIN , they butchered characters like Shocker, that Flash xD, dick peter dick peter !!! what the fuck was that ? Jokes for 10 years old kids?

Spiderman 1 and 2 raised the bar so much that now everything they do seems lame.

Spiderman 2 > Spiderman 1 > spiderman 3 > Homecoming >>>>>>>>>> the other 2 turds they made

I want to see him swing around new york buildings not fucking running on parks and beachs and backyards ffs did they blew the budget on the ship or something?

It was weird some decisions, the only good thing is he is in Avengers...

Are you...ok?

Is MJ normally as woke as Michelle is?

they did such a good job with MJ in this movie

Is MJ normally as woke as Michelle is?

she's always marched to the beat of her own drum, to use an overused phrase

WhyYouMaryJanePart1J.jpg

gonna have to err to slayven on this but I think there have been instances where college MJ would be involved with protesting

She doesn't live next door to Peter.

Well, she ain't the outgoing party girl we were first introduced to...

But that's a change I like.

Has MJ ever had a personality beyond "red hair party girl" and, eventually, "generic girlfriend/wife"? I guess "spunky" and "fiery" and other generic tags?

I mean I like Spider-Man and all but his love interests have always seemed more like accessories than characters. The Ultimate versions are the only ones I ever liked, and they're essentially brand new characters.
