the solution, of course, is to not use yours to kill on a massive scale. like a normal person.

trump voters didn't vote on gun rights. they voted on "economic anxiety". Kappa.

if nothing but a person's self control is in the way of me killing 50 people, that's pretty terrible.

"Not an act of terrorism" because the shooter was a white male. How is someone killing 50+ people and hospitalizing 400+ people NOT an act of terrorism?

Fuck this shit. Feel terrible for the victims. Politicians need to grow some fucking balls and implement real gun control in this country.

I think it has to be political to be an act of terrorism. We don't know his motive yet.

Terrorism requires a political, religious or ideological motive for the killing. Not every single shooting is going to be classed as a terror attack. Look at previous shootings in America, it's "mass shooting" or "massacre" if there weren't political, religious or ideological motives.

This case is still being investigated, depending on what the police find it may well be classed as a terrorist attack in the next 24~72 hours. The guys social media profile seems to be non-existent. Searching for motive will be going on behind the scenes just now.

No single person should be able to hold this amount of power. There is not a single thing the people at the concert could've done. I can't even imagine the kind of load would be lifted if guns were gone. It's stuff like this that makes me consider moving to somewhere else where I don't have to worry about this crap.

I never want to even hold a gun in my entire life. In fact, I want to get out of this fucking country.

I've fired a gun 3 different times in my life, from WWII rifle, to a 9mm to an auto shotgun. I still would never own a gun. I hate the idea of what one can be capable of given that much power. Such a tragedy this happened and as some have posted earlier.
We need to end this "thoughts and prayers" and actually come together with a solution. Unfortunately it's us unarmed vs those armed with many guns. It's almost like going to war with our fists and clenched teeth whole the other side is armed to the teeth.

It's a Monday work day. Their PR and crisis management teams probably have a 10:30 meeting on how to spin this.

Their goal is more gun sales, so they need to accurately gauge what happened and their response to increase gun sales.

They don't have to spin anything. Stock for gun manufacturers (former smith and Wesson, I think) is already going up.

Or even better ban the fucking things and find a better hobby. It's attitudes like yours that are part of the problem. YOU may be a rational, sane individual but the same laws that allow you to own guns also allow others to get them and inflict carnage.

I saw more signs concerning gun control than anything here in Maine, and it wasn't even close. It's also a place Democrats have always easily won.

Guns, god and racism. The holy trinity.

My perspective...

I have one handgun I carry for protection. I have two AR-15 rifles I used on duty, along with a tactical 12gauge shotgun. I have a really old 4-10 shotgun that my dad used when he was a kid in the 60's. I have two 30+ year old .22 stock fed rifles; those were my parents hunting rifles from a long time ago.

I always have my handgun with me. All the other guns are locked in a safe, in a closet, and probably used a few times in the past five years.

The only thought I've had about owning more, is to collect something that is rare, or a limited production release. Never did get anything though.

Thanks for your perspective man, I mean i just can’t fathom people wanting to collect things that could so easily kill someone , but at the same time I have grown up with no easy access to guns and not having the same culture as us.

A lot of the people dead today probably have family who love guns , own guns etc and I doubt even this event will sway there minds .

Because terrorism does not simply mean "an act of violence".

Should be on the top of every page.

I thought she was in the crowd before the shooting telling people they were going to die /s

The news will literally report any rumor in the direct aftermath of a mass killing.

PS. Thanks for the update Audiboxer

I’m selling my handgun tomorrow.
I enjoy going to the range.
But I can’t keep supporting it.

I live in the south, right next to an army base. So everyone basically has a gun. So I got one too.m when I moved here to keep by the nightstand.

But the fact is I’m more worried about being attacked in public than I am in my own home.

More people being armed wouldn’t have stopped a single person from dying.

I kind of feel awful that I do get so much enjoyment from shooting.

I saw the thread before I went to bed and thought "Ugh, not again" but otherwise didn't pay attention because frankly this happens so often in the US.

Woke up and saw the updated title and my jaw literally dropped.

What in the holy fuck?! You DON'T need to carry a gun with you all the time......not unless you're residing in Mogadishu or Kabul!

I carry just in case. If there is a threat on myself or others, at least I can respond when there isn't any other option. I don't see how that is a problem.

Yeah, it's a terrible tragedy no doubt. The collecting.. while on face, things look nice, but I've never really went through with it when it comes to firearms.

That is from the BBC, from the independent

He was confirmed dead early on in the investigation, leaving officers searching for a 62-year-old woman named as Marilou Danley.

Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said investigators had found the woman, who he described as Asian, 4 foot 11 inches tall and weighing 111 pounds (50 kg).

Police said they don't believe Ms Danley, who was located outside the US, was involved in the shooting.

Police said Paddock had used Ms Danley's ID documents to check into the hotel, which initially led to speculation that she was in the hotel at the time of the attack.

A Hyundai Tucson vehicle understood to be owned by Ms Danley was also found by police.

She's been cleared as a POI.

Looks like the scumbag used her ID/vehicle, which triggered her as being a POI. That plus she's apparently a roommate.

Because without a political motive an attack - of any size or scale - is not terrorism. It's just mass violence. Words have meanings, and the meaning of terrorism is well established.

I'm not American, so I guess I don't understand this bizarre semantic football played with the word terrorism or terrorist in this and other threads. Who cares? Does it make this astonishingly disgusting act any better or worse if it is / isn't called terrorism? Does it change anything for the victims, their families to hear that word spoken? I don't get it.

Anyway, there's no evident motivation here but the police will hopefully turn up something in due time. If they turn up anything remotely political, people will call him a domestic terrorist like Timothy McVeigh and the rest.

These happen all the time, but NFL players better not disrespect our country and flag!

Fuck the nra, politicians, and people that cling to their guns and keep anything from ever changing. Kids and innocent civilians gunned down don't matter. Politicians gunned down don't matter.

So sad. These music events need to be harder targets all around. Whether it's a night club like Bataclan(89 killed) or Orlando(49 killed)or concerts like Aria Grande(22 killed) or this one(who knows yet the number of dead) there needs to be better security for all of these places where so many people are condensed into small areas.

The current administration spews lies every day. Every. Fucking. Day. How are they any different than 4Chan? I'm saying they're more likely to give places like 4Chan a pass compared to places that are more critical towards them like GAF

What in the holy fuck?! You DON'T need to carry a gun with you all the time......not unless you're residing in Mogadishu or Kabul!

"used on duty" implies the poster your quoting isn't the average citizen. You don't know their position or risks inherent to their life.

I have an aunt and uncle out there right now (we all live in Missouri)...they're at the Tropicana and ok and it was insanely harrowing to hear them talk about it. They were already in there room when it happened.

They actually invited my wife and I to go but we couldn't, glad I didn't.

Jesus Christ....my thoughts and condolence go out to all the victims, when will it stop? :-(

That's horrifying.... My heart goes out to the family and friends of the victims.

How where they even able to sneak these guns in there? I used to do security for concerts, and everything is checked when you walk into a concert/event hall. Where they acting as if they were part of the show or something?

EDIT: I've forgot that it's also part hotel.

According to the news reports, the shooter was not at the concert.

The shooter was on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay and was shooting down, into the the concert area, from an elevated position across the street.

The right to bear arms could be easily defended by strict regulation and registraion, and conpetency.

The 2nd amendent allows regulation.

Same how we outlaw heavy weapons like rocjet launchers and missiles.

As an outsider looking in though, all he ever seemed to do after a mass-shooting during his time in office, was to come out, look a bit teary eyed, read a statement and then proceed to do jack-shit to actually try and prevent any similar future attacks.

His only move would be an executive order but with Republicans in power would have immediately put impeachment on the table.

Which shows why the specific focus on terrorism in the dialogue and policy is such a problem. You don't need to be a terrorist to kill a bunch of people.

There have been two famous mass shootings in the Denver metro area in the past 30 years. Neither was a terrorist attack. They still left dozens of people dead. The national coverage after Colombine was "oh this was so sad, now let's do fuck all. Let's speculate on why these people decided to shoot up a school, and focus on psychoanalyzing their hateful and self-serving ideas, but do nothing to stop them from actually doing it." And then when the Aurora theater shooting happened, even less response.

You can't just see something like this and say "Well, some people snap" and take it as a universal truth that we can't do anything about it.

Heard the audio as I was driving in to work this morning, and it's terrifying. The rapid fire of the bullets, I once again can't understand why these weapons are legal. That wasn't the sound of a weapon meant to protect ones self, it was the sound of a weapon of war, meant to mow down, to kill as many as possible.

He was a great regular guy who "just snapped".
Not like those Muslims that are evil if not from birth but from childhood.
Why aren't white community leaders condemning his actions?

Why are Americans so self defeating?

'Nothing can be done about guns'
'Nothing will ever change'
It won't make any difference'

People are dying and you are all still like this.
Can't really blame 'em. While the scope is bigger than normal this time around, mass shootings happen so regularly that you can predict the exact ways how politicians react to these stories. The vast majority offer their condolences, pretend like the tragedy is as rare as a blooming titan arum, and dismiss the whole thing as a personal responsibility and mental health issue. To top it off, they'll gladly throw people with mental health issues under the bus, while also sabotaging health care. After a while it becomes clear that the elected officials do not want things to change. Obama pretty much said he was powerless to do anything against it.
