One of the first things the dude did was allowing "mentally ill" people to buy guns so AT LEAST he can't use the mentally ill justification, right ?

....right ?

Oh, he can say that mentally ill people can't walk the streets, and are dangerous people that should be locked up, and will say that anyone who has applied for ADA protections will be placed in a new rollout of mental health facilities.

But they can still own guns!

Horrible. I had a coworker who was in Vegas last night tell me about the shooting, and I'm dumbfounded. It's all we're talking about here right now. 50 dead, over 400 wounded. Horrible.

Anyone got a picture of the hotel after the attack? I can't see any blown out windows or anything like that. Was he on the roof?

My brother sent me this but I've been unable to source it myself. Looks like Mandelay Bay though:

CBS has an interview with his brother who lives on the opposite coast. Said the gunman has no religious or political affiliation, and the last time they heard from him was a text asking about their mother after the hurricane in Florida. Also said his brother was never a gun nut, has no training, and wondered where he got all the guns.

Crazy.

Trump is going to take that ISIS tweet and shove it up our asses. "See, it's ISIS," without regard for their history of claiming responsibility for attacks that have nothing to do with them. Meh.

It should be as impossible as we can make it for people to own guns with this type of firepower.

PERIOD.

The fuck is wrong with this country,

I've been up all night because of this. This fucking sucks. I'm feeling tired. I don't want to hear Trump talk and make everything worse even a little bit.

I'm happy me and my loved ones are safe, but I'll never know for how long. I want this to end. I want everyone to sleep peacefully. If you're alive, that should be your right.

That's pretty interesting. I would have bet this guy was a huge gun collector. I wonder what the catalyst was for all this?

Rightwingers are sharing a facebook troll post claiming "my ANTIFA comrade did it!". I cant link it becasue I got banhammered from the forum for calling it bullshit lol. I am gonna report that forum to the breitbart ad boycott people. It was a cool conspiracy forum until trump did his mexican rapists speech then the whole thing turned racist.

Why are Americans so self defeating?

'Nothing can be done about guns'
'Nothing will ever change'
It won't make any difference'

People are dying and you are all still like this.

I think after an elementary school was a target of a mass shooting and nothing was done. Many people finally gave up hope for ever having true gun laws passing with the current government officials we have in Congress.

Because "the right to bear arms" is a 2nd amendment right protected under the constitution. It's the right that is revered the most (based on action from citizens and lawmakers). Someone said it earlier that the massacre of children didn't make lawmakers move to something more sensible, nothing will.

Someone can correct me, but it'll take 2/3rds of our congress and senate to ratify the constitution in any way and you'll never find the amount of people willing to make such a move to make the 2nd amendment more sensible

The absurd interpretation of the 2nd amendment is both very recent and very targeted. There's a reason these sort of mass murders are increasing, it's because of policy and action to reframe what the amendment actually says.

I have to imagine Trump will be on a short leash with a very scripted message. I would think he’s being told to not ad lib at all during this, but I could be wrong.

Some really stupid people at work with me... (im in portugal)

Me : do u guys know what happen in las vegas? 50 people were killed....
A collegue : so what?

i literally had to stop myself to tell her to fuck off....

The regulation allowing the "mentally ill" to own guns allowed people on Social Security who struggled budgeting for themselves to own guns which Obama had prohibited after Sandy Hook.

All guns should be confiscated, but this was an extremely narrow rule that had almost nothing to do with violent mental illness...

NRA should just go for broke, and make it so gun ownership is mandatory. That's the only way up.

How did he shoot people from all the way up there? :/

Aimed in the general direction of a crowd of tens of thousands of people. Even without a scope that wouldn't be difficult. Also worth remembering that bullets fly fast - faster than the speed of sound - and so could travel that distance easily.

How the fuck do you prevent shit like this? I'm at a loss. He was unknown to police, not even a traffic stop, according to police just now on CNN.

The mentally ill debate is six of one, half dozen of the other.

Someone who likes to gamble and blow money can be classified as "mentally ill" and the last thing some of those people need is to constantly be slapped when needing help.

There's a really wide net on the "mentally ill" qualifier and we should actively work to make sure the right people get the right help and reinforcement needed to heal.

That said, there's the other spectrum that doesn't include things like more straight forward addictions and actually encompasses people who are a danger to the safety of themselves and others that we need to watch out for.

Being able to separate the two is important, so both you and the poster you quoted need to understand there's a lot more nuance to the discussion than what your hot takes show. It's not so cut and dry.
