Yeah I think I am goign to take a break from this for the rest of the day, been glued to the TV since 6am, my head hurts.

Anyway, be good to each other GAF, stop hurling insults at each other and pointing fingers, let's find the truth in all this, what caused and what can we do to prevent it in the future... and stop convoluting it with political and social topics that only distracts from the truth.

But if I amy give my two cents; As a Canadian, gun control, stricter gun possession rules and what have you is a good place to start.

Good day and God bless!

I think we need to stop talking about sensible gun control. We are fast the point in this country where moderate gun control would do much to solve the issue with the mass proliferation of guns. We should do what we can to save as many lives as possible but we shouldn't lie to ourselves that background checks can fix our broken system

Open carry is insanity. The fact that ANYTHING other than firearms are commercialized is crazy. The fact that you people think carrying a freaking semi-automatic in open air is not only legal but normal is insane. Get your shit together, USA.
We have a society where some people want citizens to be able to own/carry guns and others that don't.

How can a normal society function like that? Something has got to give at some point.

God this is so depressing to read.

At this point the lack of action on guns after events like this almost feels like some kind of dark running gag.
I wouldn't even be surprised if I wake up one day and read a head line like "US Policy now states if you commit a mass shooting you must kill yourself afterwards so we don't have to deal with finding, arresting and charging you as well"

They say he used a fully automatic weapon. They are very rare and expensive to own legally.

Didn't they say he was an older retired guy? It's possible he bought his fully automatic weapons prior to the ban?

They say he used a fully automatic weapon. They are very rare and expensive to own legally.

I've seen "reports" but no real confirmation of what gun exactly.

CNN for example is reporting legally obtained firearms of which at least one was modified to fire full auto.

I think we still need to wait for 100% confirmation on what he had.

How? Why? This is beyond bizarre.

Apparently he was shooting at people 12 football fields away? 1000+ yards.

I practice shooting a few times a month, and have been a shooter since I was very little. Only Prone, or on a bench, can I hit a target 700 yards away. And that is with a high mag scope firing very slowly. At that distance rapid fire shots would spray everywhere, there would be people hit or dead that were not anywhere near the concert. This keeps getting stranger.

I could wrap my head around it if this guy was a seal sniper maybe. Even then its insanity.
Your math isn't adding up because the target wasn't remotely that far away. 1000+ yards is about a kilometer away, which this decidedly was not. The concert venue was literally right across the street from the Mandalay Bay, and he was shooting at an absolutely massive target. Since he was in such an elevated position, he was also firing down on them, basically like shooting fish in a barrel. You wouldn't need to be a master marksman. Just aim and spray.

"Coming together as a country" means what? Mourn the victims for a few days and wait till the next one comes around?

I don't understand how so many people can shrug this off when the problem is clear as day.

Sending thoughts and prayers gets me winded enough to need few days to recover, I don't know about you

Absolutely disgusting. The media and racists want us to fear outsiders yet most of the violence happens domestically. Fucking 58+ dead and 500+ injured people...due to 1 cunt in a building. Makes you realize how easy it is to cause chaos. Good thing airport security is making sure we aren't smuggling water bottles into planes.

The biggest tragedy in all of this is how nobody will learn from this event and nothing will change. Guns laws will remain intact and another such attack will occur. Rinse and repeat. Land of the free and home of the brave...I wonder which land they are talking about it because it's sure as fuck not the US.

The same fucking people that are saying "Now is not the time for debate, but we need to come together" are the same fucking people that are outraged about kneeling for the anthem.

I'm mean.. WHAT?

I mean if you look at it like these people want to put down any challenge to the current system and bask in fake platitudes than it makes sense and is consistent.

Seriously, why are people so irrationally passionate about guns? I get the enthusiasm, but why would people want automatic rifles. These are killing machines.

They need them for when the government becomes corrupt and oppressive (lol). Or when the "mark of the beast" is mandated and men in armor come to their house demanding loyalty to Satan and the one world government.

I've had this conversation. There are people who think this.

Preemptive: If I ever get killed during an attack like this, you sure as fuck better believe I want people to use the opportunity to discuss gun control.

“not the time” my fucking ass

It seems there is some common ground on gun reforms that everyone can agree on. Congress just needs to stop being a pussy and get this done.

It's not just about the legality of these particular rifles. It's about the greater gun culture issue, about attitudes, and the insane situation America (as the only developed nation) is in with regards to gun violence.

I'm not confident that will ever change. This country was founded and won by firearms.

Short of taking them away completely, I don't see any laws or gun control measures preventing another one of these in the future.

Who? That is such an unreasonable conversation to have with someone. President Trump is the most “unruly” person in our government we will ever have, and no one is taking over anything. Such stupid nonsense.

These guns need to be banned NOW. We do not need access to these kinds of weaponry.

As far as full auto pre-1986 weapons, its more of a collectors thing, as they are very hard to come by and expensive as well. As far as bumpfire and quick pull triggers that fire multiple rounds (1 when you pull trigger, 1 auto fires when you let go of trigger, multiple trigger pulls= full auto), there is no purpose of it. Its sold as a 'fun toy' and virtually every time I see them advertised its shown as just that, dumb fun for extra adrenaline.

its so fucking embarrassing that everyone ignores this every. single. time.

Attempt at a serious answer:

Because having a right to own and use such powerful machines is one of the only things many of these people have left to make them feel powerful, in a world where they are increasingly powerless and insignificant.

It's a bit like what a pacifier is to a baby, in some sick and twisted sense.

Hello all, I've been at work and missed out in any updates since Trump's speech. Has any more info come out since then? I'm hesitant to Google or check a news site because I'm not sure what's mere speculation or not.

Seriously, why are people so irrationally passionate about guns? I get the enthusiasm, but why would people want automatic rifles. These are killing machines.

Because without their guns the military, at the behest of the government, is going to come to their house and kill them and their family.

Also, Make damn sure you stand during the anthem and show the military the proper respect it deserves you scum!

Dont waste any of your time with that. It's not meant to change any opinions of the general public. That is for their people who arent going to believe anything you tell them anyway. They will float out different conspiracy theories until their people find one comfortable enough to rest on. Deep down inside they know how it works and I'm sure they know its all bullshit. They just want to be fed the right kind of bullshit.

Family members. Well educated and upper middle class family members. I live and grew up in Colorado. I was in this bubble until I was 17 or so, it's only my Mom and one of my brothers, but fuck if it isn't infuriating.

I means that politicians around the country are hopeful all of this will stop on its own for literally no reason

This is frightening. Almost half of the US has such a difference in opinions on gun control. There's no way any concrete control laws can be passed with a divide like this.

Thanks for the info. These fun toys are not fun and are not toys. Maybe people don't fully understand their original purpose? Their purpose was basically replaced. This is truly frightening. I really don't know what could be done. I'm sorry fellow US gaffers have to go through this.

Ben Shapiro and Joe Rogan love that government tyranny reason.

It may have been relevant in the wild west 2-300 hundred years ago that you could fend off a tyrannical government but what chance do you have these days.

While I don't like Piers Morgan, Ben and Joe act like Ben whooped Piers ass and laugh. I watched the debate with Ben and Piers and all I heard ben Shapiro back pedal to the tyrannical government excuse by the end, which I don't think is relevant.

Has any republican actually said this today?

I'd hope not.

I'd also hope that this really really is the catalyst for genuine change.

The one hope I have in Trump is that he comes across as reactive.

And if he reacts then maybe those on his side of the aisle will finally shift.

I hope anyway.

People opposing gun control laws here out of all places after something like this is staggeringly mind blowing to me. I don't care if it's hard to get an automatic weapon or not. This guy obviously had the means to get access to it AND the money. He killed almost 60 people and maimed another 500. Can you people even fathom what is that?

I hate they call themselves Pro life and dems don't call them out on that. They're against abortion. That's it.
Yup. It's 100 percent horse shit. Those same "pro-lifers" are also strongly against gun control (despite the huge number of gun related deaths) and are usually pro-death penalty.

Time to come together as a country, but do absolutely nothing that would change or help prevent these horrific acts from playing out. The time and place for the conversation and for change is immediately. That's what we should be coming together for in the first place. Instead of empty words from politicians who refuse to put the safety of the people they claim to care about first.

To paraphrase a former U.S. president: "As long as you let the poorest white man own as many guns as he likes, fire them in his back yard whenever he wants and make him believe he's "protecting his home and family", he won't mind that you're stealing from him, lying to him and fucking him over in almost every other conceivable way."

Well do you expect the people who shout this crap to call for their own ban?
