Was at work all day and could hardly follow the news, this is so horrible. You'd think a tragedy of this magnitude would put the gun laws back under discussion but I guess that's too much to hope for. Once again nothing will change I guess.

Im pretty sure they are back under discussion, but the republicans try to shut down the discussion, thats par for the course.

Can anyone link me to the article about fake info going around?

My friend just sent me this post and I want to link him to something before I fucking punch him in the face

"The shooter, Stephen Craig Paddock, 64.. a white liberal Democrat, hated President Trump and spoke openly about his political views. They are as follows:

Political Views per his Facebook page:
-Proud to Be a Democrat
-The Rachel Maddow Show
-Thank You Obama
-Anti-Trump Army
-Progressive Day,
Organizing for Action (Soros)
-Not My President
-Fight Trump
-Boycott All Things Trump
-Impeach Trump

I am sharing, because the media won't."

I don't care what his politics are. That some people do is kind of upsetting. Whatever his politics he thought it was okay to kill 60 or so people and injure hundreds. If he's left wing or right wing, seems kind of secondary, you know?

was posted earlier in thread that he had done stupid bets on gambling prior to this event, even if you take that as him doing this, da fuck do you get this many weapons from and in such a short time without flagging up somehow

You do realize that the overwhelming majority of guns walking across the board come *from* the US, right?

Our robust manufacturing is the source of most illegal guns across the entire content. Cracking down here would benefit everyone around us, particularly northern Mexico.

I'm glad we agree

No, there hasn't been any confirmation about what the guy believed or his motives are. Not that they matter. Civilians like him should not have that type of access to a fire arms.

Good news

Those are word-for-word narrative control points from /pol/

Yeah, I guess that's a fair point. It's so weird to see how effective their propaganda machine is, especially when you can't counter with "that's not true!" because you don't have the actual proof for something that required none for the person to believe it in the first place. Oh well, the faster that message is pushed out on the masses with no factual counterclaims, the more damage it does but if the general response is "oh well, it doesn't really matter, he killed people" I kind of feel the same way.

To be clear, we have no information one way or another about the motivation or the beliefs of the shooter, correct?
No, nothing yet. Do NOT believe anything you read about it right now, because there’s a ton of misinformation flying around from all sides. I would not believe anything about his motive until the Vegas PD or Sheriff put out a statement about it.

My sister swears that there were more shootings in Vegas last night, including at a CVS and people being shot in their cars but I can't find anything.

There wasn't a mass coordinated attack across the Valley, no. People may have been shot in their cars near the scene because the assailant was aimlessly shooting at an open field.

Just learned that someone from my town in Alberta is now missing in Vegas. Her husband is at the Red Cross there, but she hasn’t been heard from since this happened last night.

Amazing how even the smallest of towns have been impacted by this, Vegas may be an American city but I’d bet a number of the victims are international tourists.
Cbc named two canadian tourists who were killed, and spoke with another that was there.

Nothing will change because folks are convinced nothing will change.
Funny how that works.

Dude kept a low profile.
Seems like extremely limited or no real social media presence, no police record. Worked through to retirement. NYT has a long write up, and the only thing of note about the guy is his father being a bank robber in the 60s or something like that. Going to be a while, I think.

Why would she say something like that???

Someone in this thread said something like it. It's pretty much the worst response you could possibly have to this. Stupid beyond belief. Unless Wayne La Pierre himself is the single and only one getting shot by some lone gunman please stop assuming everyone in a crowd is voting some way and they don't deserve your sympathy for whatever dumbshit reason. People don't deserve to die no matter how horrendous their voting patterns are.

It's not going to be on the table any time soon. If the gruesome murder of dozens of small children couldn't get even the smallest law enacted or even voted on nothing is going to.

Im pretty sure they are back under discussion, but the republicans try to shut down the discussion, thats par for the course.

It's depressing. Didn't Obama also try to change them and couldn't get it through? I guess the NRA is all-powerful.

These were originally attributed to a FB page people were trying to say was the shooter of a man who had the last name as the woman.

You could see the /pol/ propaganda evolve on twitter overnight it was super creepy.

It’s getting to the point I don’t want to be in America anymore. It’s getting more and more unsafe, and I’m in a small town in Florida.

Why would she say something like that???

Because Republicans are the ones that have been denying gun control for years.

That said, not being able to sympathize for innocent victims in a senseless attack like this is inhuman.

This is factually false. Pound for pound, you haven't lived in a safer time.

Depending on where you are, you had like 5x bigger chance of getting shot in the 90's.

Why were you more comfortable with more rounds when you could carry? You only need four bullets to incapacitate a target factoring in a couple of misses. Additionally, carrying a gun in the first place increases your likelihood of being killed by a gun, even without considering suicides. Having a gun can turn a situation where you could be robbed into you getting shot because you tried to resist(and statistically, that's how things work out more often than not).

You want more than four shots for competitive shooting? Just allow shooting ranges to have bigger magazines that can't be removed from the premises.

I'm strictly looking at things from a self defense point of view. My main weapon had 17 round capacity but the next gun I bought was around 10. I felt like that would be really limiting so I carried both. Luckily I never had to fire a shot. I haven't felt the need to carry in 18 years or so but that is changing now.

I am talking about a self-defense point of view. You're less safe with a gun, statistically. If you did have to fire 10 shots to get yourself out of a situation, you'd be in a situation where you're fighting off multiple attackers that likely also have guns that are already drawn. Which is to say, your chances against them would be better if you surrender to their demands and you're nearly certain to die if you resist.

All the talk of God for a developed country was pretty horrible.

Saw that Mark Kelly, congresswoman Gabby Giffords' husband, said how it is.
"Thoughts and prayers are important. We send our thoughts and prayers, too. But they are not enough. Your thoughts and prayers aren't going to stop the next shooting. Only action and leadership will do that."

This is the same belief that makes people fear self-driving cars. It's the illusion of having control.

Because those people actually don't care. These events are "ammunition" to construct narratives from.
