I think the difference here is that, while some of these people are assholes, or worse, JonTron’s statements work beyond that, and resonate more with a larger issue than Travis Scott being a dick to a camera-man.

I do understand where this argument comes from, as I suppose there is a fine layer of hypocrisy, but anyone has a right to draw a line and not purchase something regardless of whether or not you agree.

I will say this is a tough spot to say the least. On one hand I do think I could understand the devs being reluctant to remove what may be a small role, as they might get hit hard by the 4chan audience because, well that’s what they do, but at the same time I wouldn’t really want someone known for being that way in my game. Obviously the right choice here was to remove him from the game, and with the devs not really making any statements on his inclusion, I get the decision to assume the worst. I wasn’t too interested in this game anyways, so I can’t really say if it would move me to not purchase it, but at the very least I’d be iffy about it. We’ll see if some statement is made in the next day or two, but probably not.

So wait, did the devs make a statement about removing / recasting his role?

Nope. They could be afraid after the Yooka-Laylee backlash, but that was insignificant. Most of what hurt that game was about the game itself (Including people forgetting what genre of game they literally pre-emptively paid money just to see revived).

A Hat in Time is already getting strong reviews now that the embargo's up, so it should be safe for them to say if he's gone, since it seems like the game-end of everything's golden.

EDIT: I tweeted at them, by the way. Hopefully that'll get them to at least release a statement!

It always kind of baffles me how proud people are to not take moral stands on things.

Like, I understand that videogames are often an escapist hobby to begin with and sometimes it feels like the world is too complex and stressful. I understand if you just want to put everything that's going on in the world out of your mind and play games. I'm not going to judge you harshly on that.

This honestly hurts me. Sugiyama is a disgusting piece of shit, but by the time I found out about his bullshit, I was already completely enamored with the entire franchise.

This is a completely different scenario. Despite the fact that I've been following A Hat in Time for years, and only didn't donate to its Kickstarter campaign because I was having a rough month at the time, these guys are essentially unproven developers. I have no emotional attachment to their game. I have no trouble throwing my interest in it aside to take a political stance.

But then again, as others have said, you have the right to pick your battles. I certainly wouldn't begrudge anyone who avoids anything Dragon Quest related because of Sugiyama.

Not turning a blind eye, buying the game doesnt directly support JonTron so if I was interested in the game I would buy it and not feel bad because I am able to seperate the rest of the game from JonTron's as I understand a small role(I understand others cant and that isnt a problem) If the developers came out and said Jon recieves a cut of each sale(doubt it) I wouldnt buy it, if they came out and said something in support of Jontron or even trying to downplay JonTron's views as just political I would no buy it. If I was interested in the game, I would want to support the devs and not let JonTron's shitty views get in the way.
