Thank you!

EDIT: lol...ok...paint is not a good tool to resize images.

I just redid all the ones I'd done myself in Paint... I cropped and rotated them in Photos, adjusted the lightness and colour there, then I resized the JPGs to 228x160 in Paint and saved them as PNGs... they all came out much better...

Flashed back to the OG kernel.

At some point I was just getting a black screen on my TV when powering on the SNES. Guess I was being playing with covers and config files a bit too much.

I'll wait for an official release....Robin, is the version I took from your tutorial here yesterday still the best one to use? Also hoping the official will resize the covers to the correct size!

Sorry if this has already been covered elsewhere, but have we already figured out how many save states you start losing for every added game?

I could do folders if I need, but I'm also fine with just adding only a few key games if I'm just losing out on a few save states in the process.

The hacks are moving fast and furiously, time to make a list of games that must be added while I wait for the final release.

Weird, they all came from the same source.

So is there a way to replace the ROM in Hackchi, or do I have to delete it and start over with the box art and details?

Also, how do you take screenshots?

I had to start over. But I assume you could just go into the file and replace the rom in the zip file.

There is an RC4 out, Robin's link is RC2 iirc. I'm just waiting for the full release with all my files in order... not worth getting stuck in a bootloop again.

Didn't see an option, so I deleted the non-working games and started over.

The option to extract and replace isn't there. It's something you'd have to do manually in windows explorer. To me it was easier to just put it all back in with hackchi.

Someone on the internet is putting in work for us. I found these online.

This is the Japanese SD3 official box art

seiken-densetsu-3-boxart.jpeg

And someone took the same concept and made a US style box art out of it.

I don't care for the ESRB logo to be honest, but for the sake of uniformity and having the entire library on my SNES use the same style box art, this is what I'll be using.

The same was done with Terranigma as which looks rather nice.

I like the FFVI one too. My artistic skills aren't all that good, I was hoping someone had a US style FF4 box art. Everywhere I looked online it was FF2us instead and not the Japanese artwork reused into a custom box art.

Why don't you use custom folders (e.g. by genres) and sort the original 21 inside them?

What I did is to keep the original 21 games in the root, so they appear as soon as the console is turned on. My custom games are located inside a folder, which I configured to include up to 40 games. I used the trick Robin posted a few pages ago to make the UI fit 40 games in the screen without overflowing it. Since I only have 38 custom games, everything is there.

Nice, simple and clean :) Although I'm considering getting rid of the lower icons altogether and put everything in the root of the UI...

Ah. Now that I look at the real box art, I still think the promo piece is somewhat better suited, because it reminds me of the SoM / SD2 box art, with the three characters looking at the Mana Tree.

Now small part you showed me with the characters at the bottom might fit within a SNES box template to give off the same effect as the SD2 box with the 6 characters looking towards the Mana Tree.

Wow, Star Fox 2 SUCKS.

Wouldn’t go that far, but yeah the set pieces aren’t all that great. I feel like the game is serving me up an endless amount of tiny appetizers instead of a full main course...

I understand now why they opted not to release it back in the day, I’m pretty sure the reception would’ve been fairly harsh and negative...

I'm not sure about the file limit issues like we had with the NES mini, but there's a chance you might run out of space before you even have to worry about that.

Each save slot seems to require about 2 MB. I have 35 games in total, so we can estimate that I need around 280 MB to use all save slots. I only have 213 MB free now, and I'm only using a few save slots.

I could try to make you something closer with the characters tonight, I have the same template that person used.

How many games should I be looking to put on this (as in what's a safe and reasonable limit), and what musts or hidden gems am I missing?

I have a list so far:

Zombies Ate My Neighbor
Actraiser
Secret Of Evermore
Sunset Riders
Demon's Crest
Wild Guns
Lufia II
Turtles In Time
Megaman X2
Chrono Trigger
The Lion King
Aladdin
Harvest Moon
Mickey Mania
Breath Of Fire 2
Donkey Kong Country 2

Still got some issues with a couple of games, mainly due to romhacks.

I tried applying the brick fix for Super Mario All-Stars. I'm certain I applied the right one (the non-headered hack to the non-headered ROM), but when powered up Mario hits a brick, the screen goes to black.

As for Chrono Trigger, I tried using the Chrono Trigger + hack because it sounded neat on paper (restores unused bosses and other content), but not only was the music out of sync for the intro (the one that plays when idle on the title screen), but I couldn't leave Crono's room in the beginning.

I can't wait until we get our own modding thread.

Someone make it already, we need to have all these custom box arts and other stuff archived.

I have all 43 boxarts that I either created or overhauled ready to share in best quality and in the right size, will upload them later to imgur.

Yes. It’s bad. It’s not that it hasn’t aged well. It was always bad.
I've been going over in my mind whether I would have liked it if it were released back then. I think that it would have gone down as a disappointing sequel.....

....but on the other hand, if it came out before N64, it might have been able to trade on "all range mode 3D" in a way that is hard to appreciate now. Think about how early 3D games were given a pass just because they were in 3D ... games like Shadows of the Empire come to mind.

You might even say that Star Fox 1 sucks! It was an advanced graphics showpiece and kinda a shitty game.
What? No. It's still a high quality corridor shmup that's a blast to play even now.

I might be in the minority here but anyone else kind of just underwhelmed by this box? I got mine at launch but only played a few times. Unlike my NES classic which I put dozens of hours into I just can't get into my SNES classic. I grew up with an SNES and loved it as a child but I've played all these games before through VC and other iterations. I think the chase of tracking down and owning the box was more fun than actually playing it. :/

Sorry if this has already been stated, but I couldn't seem to find it when looking through pages of the thread and obviously the thread is quite long now ha. Can someone drop me the links or a good jumping off point in regards to adding games on the system?

Sounds to me like you're just too familiar with the SNES library. I kinda am too. But I felt that way about the NES classic too.

You may have noticed that hakchi has a "Take screenshot" menu option under Tools, but if you are on Windows 10 this won't work. This is because .png files are associated with that shitty Windows 10 album preview thing. To fix it, just make .png files open in something else by default (Paint is fine), and voila, super awesome beautiful screenshots direct from your SNES Mini.

I change it back to down+select in the UI just because of this.

Which FF5 patch is this? I don't think I've ever seen one with that font before.

EDIT: Found it

Guessing Reddit would be pretty up to date

Meanwhile I've already put at least 40-50 hours into this thing and now I'm very very carefully choosing just a few games to add partly because I only have so much free time, and partly because if I'm not careful this will turn into another 'device' where I'll just spend all my time customizing and then not actually getting to playing the damn thing. It's part of the reason I put so much time into this, and part of the reason why my Pi Zero is currently sitting on the shelf not being used despite having most of the same games.

Ya don't! They're a mystery until ya buy 'em an try 'em! If the price is higher than the last one ya bought, its better is really all there is to it. I never have an issue with money in the game so even in the event of wasteful spending its never been an issue.

dope, ty

Checking out the romhack site, there are a lot of beautiful VWF hacks these days... it's just a shame so few try to realign the text when using them. Having 70% of the text box be empty and right justified ruins the effect. I guess I could pull out the ol' hex editor and try correcting the games I want myself but that looks to be a pretty big undertaking on things like Breath of Fire and this is EXACTLY what I was talking about when I said this kind of tinkering can be dangerous :)

Trying to hack mine and I keep getting a usb unable to read device error. It detects the mini but will not allow me to dump the kernal or flash it. Using windows 10 by the way.

The top 2 use special chips, so even of they do work eventually and someone worka it out, will probably need specific headers.

I've got 175 games zipped (7zX) with cover images saved in a folder. Its 188Mb in total. Is that pretty much the limit I should stop at in terms of not running out of space?

Did you install the driver?

All three of those are special chips in a way, actually. The first two will never be supported natively and will require redirection via retroarch. The third is a 48mbit monster and thus has a special memory lay out that likely wasn't emulated since only 2 games ever used it (the other being Star Ocean).

Hmm, modded mine and put a few extra games on it, but now I'm getting a C8 error every time I shut off the SNES. It works otherwise, but it's a bit annoying. Anyone have any idea what could have gone wrong?

Absolutely this. Once I start adding stuff in a couple days or so (depending on when the non-beta idiot-proof hakchi is released), I will only be adding 15-20 games tops, mostly to consolidate some stuff I was already in the process of playing on actual sfc carts and also I feel I'd cheapen it by trying to add 100+ games, thus making it as you mentioned, just another device.
