I usually didn't, but if the (above) potential new policy makes some people realize that banning discussion on certain topics that you don't like or agree with isn't really the best way to go about things, I'm all for it. Judging by a lot of the reactions so far tonight though, I think that might be asking for a lot.

That has nothing to do with political threads in OT or threads created to foster such a discussion.
You can moderate that issue you're describing, if it becomes an issue, without burning everything else to the ground.
But the asinine annoyances of certain members isn't why any of this is actually happening.

I still don't see a rationale for dumbing down discussion just so we can have more space for Justice League, iPhone, and *insert sport star: supernova* threads. Those threads don't go away just because the rest of the world is happening.
Besides, how can you realistically remove political discussion from a movie thread about a political event or perspective? Or a TV show about gay people? Or a videogame about murdering Nazis? Or a sports thread where half the players have something to say about politics either on or off the field? If this happened 3 months ago, would we not be allowed to discuss the Weinstein allegations in a Miramax thread?
I don't see this as sustainable going forward. You can't discuss art without discussing the human condition. You can't even have an apolitical discussion about biology and human physiology.
Not dense, just stereotypically insincere. Says a lot that, in order for some people to appear reasonable, they must consistently pretend that they don't mean what they say. If your words do not have meaning, would the world be any worse off if you didn't share them?

I am curious how that'll resolve the next time there's a something like a Zelda thread discussing stuff like wanting to have a female Link. Since stuff like that is inherently politically charged, and it's been a regular topic over the years.
I've always found stuff like that interesting. It'd be a shame to lose stuff like that, but I suppose that boils down to how strictly this political thing is enforced. It seems vaguely fleshed out as is.

This is obviously a panicked attempt to right the ship. Very little of the way this situation has been handled has been done well.
This is an example of that, and assuming the forum stays alive over the course of the next month, I am sure some of these initial mistakes will be corrected. But still I think if Off Topic is going to survive, it needs to be more inclusive for all, and moderate civil debate, for everyone involved.
