Nothing came of the Sexual Allegations, the entire reason Era started, but don't let the users discuss that! We wouldn't want them to realize how greasy the whole thing was. Really just close any thread down with an ominous link.

To say the least i'm the most suspicious of those who aren't willing to stand by their statements, or put anything on the line.

Frankly I don't really care who he/she/them is, but I think it shows something that Evilore and many posters here are actually willing to open themselves up and stand by their word, mistakes and all. It allows us all to actually reflect on our actions, and it allows us to be much more honest in general.

This thread about the Twitter CEO overturning a decision to ban Alex Jones is a really good example of what is wrong with that site.

I'm not any kind of fan of Alex Jones, but look at these responses. It starts immediately. The CEO is a white supremacist, Nazi, and a racist all because he wanted to try to let the crazy guy yell on the street corner.

Long time Gaf/Era user here. I just want to say that the vast majority of people on Resetera aren't bad, just like the vast majority of people on old Gaf weren't bad. I totally get why the loud and obnoxious majority ruins it for the rest though. I'm frankly getting pretty tired of the ridiculous moderation (I've been warned and temp banned there for very in-offensive differences in opinion). One such instance included giving genuine insight into my profession, but since that apparently was seen as discriminatory for just explaining from an informed place how things worked, it caught me a ban. That was a few months ago and kind of "Woke me up" to the fact that something was wrong. The ridiculousness of the last few days really just put the ugliness out on full display.

At the end of the day I am tired of the endless political discussion and viewpoints being injected in every damn conversation. I just want to talk about video games and movies and tv shows. You know, entertainment. Assuredly the prime reason any of us were attracted to a video game enthusiast forum to begin with.

And I do it simply because that place is much more active. So I tolerate the ridiculous echo chamber mentality and stay out of political threads and straight up avoid engaging in anything remotely political now. Really just stick to the video game and other entertainment stuff. Because it's not worth it to walk on eggshells. Unfortunately, even a post like this venting my frustrations would likely catch me a ban on Resetera. And I hate that. I do kind of hope the traffic comes back here so I could really just engage over here again, but as long as the high activity remains there, that's basically where my focus is going to be.

I think there's a lot of people posting over there versus here that are a lot like me.

Definitely, and I think that too. NewGAF is heathier and more enjoyable, put Reset has the much bigger gaming community, which makes it the best place to check out for news.

With that site slowly eating itself and this one growing back, who knows how things will be in one year or so.

Oh I'm sure we all know that, I'd say I would put myself in a group with you and the others. I know this thread is more tuned to the strange goings on over there but it's obvious the toxicity comes from the top down and feeds into a small but extremely vocal minority over there. For that forum, it's just a shame that they are amongst the most active and attention seeking, demanding of the whole. And for over here I guess it is telling because of the extreme shift in nature since the split last year. If NeoGAF were so bad and Evilore so evil, then why has this place been so chill since that split. That's my perspective on what's happened at least.

I do think the comparison between both forums posting etiquette now is kind of night and day. I feel pretty stressed if I post my real feelings in some topics over at era. I felt that way in some threads on GAF prior to the split. I have to rush off, wanted to say more but the main point is I agree with you and I think most people get it.

The problem is (and was) never the people, it's the hivemind policy. You agree to 100% with the hivemind or you get banned. If you can't give your opinion in a forum then what's the point? An echo chamber is literally the worst that can happen to a community or a forum.

Imagine being this much in denial. I honestly would chalk that up as a troll post because there is no way any reasonable person at this point would not be aware that at the very, absolute very least, something is off with that place.

Just don't go against a user actively on the fence for their multiple takes on trans acceptance (Which references the CP2077 tweet), because calling that out is a week ban. Geniunely scary that this user wants even more actioning against transphobes, beyond the obvious pedantic reaction on said tweet. Clearly this user believes you ensure change by banning people who even so much as say they are going to buy the game regardless of the tweet. (A week ban) And mentioning that also gets you banned. (A month ban even.)

Ban extended to 1 month after review. Any similar future offense will carry a severe penalty. Your ban will be lifted on Oct 3, 2018.

I wonder what the length would be, if I had actually written something slightly offensive.

Well that, and you responded to a user who pre-dominately replies to threads that talk about gender equality, racism, and so on. All that user (and the other dumping a gif) was doing was attempting to bait you into a derail. They do so by just asking questions. Or ''Tell us how you really feel'' and variations on that. Their questions are dishonest in intent. They just wanted to bait you into a ban, of which they succeeded. This is then why The Names picked a post that sounded severe enough to action you over. Contrary to popular belief, Posts with red text aren't always the posts that gets people banned. Some even get banned without even seeing any red text whatsoever.

Its just a deliberate distinction to seperate the elite from the regular staff (and users) who are just normal common folk. By making such a distinction, it can potentially refer to any user who clearly is dictating matters or baiting others.

I completely agree. It's just something I tolerate for how active things are. Like, there is no reason for me to get into my personal political or social views on anything to generally discuss games and movies and tv shows, which is the main reason I come here or there. Some people try to make literally everything into a reason to discuss their personal political or social views. But I'd rather just not play that game.

At a tamer place, maybe I could. But I probably wouldn't engage in it in those threads anyway. It would be more that I would engage in inherently political threads whereas currently I do not at all.

It's a fair point but I am not a super big poster or content creator. I could discuss things here instead of there but if the activity isn't here then it is less interesting to me. I'm still very open to returning here if the activity should return.

ERA has had tons of red text OPs that tell the posters what they are allowed to talk about. So the posters finally draw the line at not being able to refer to Jews as Nazis.

Yep. This place as it is now feels like the rest of the internet (i.e. normal) and I'm with you on hoping that it stays like this, even as people return over time. I think moving Politics to its own section will help ensure this.

I learned over the weekend that the ERA community is strictly against separating politics from discussions no matter what. When various users started expressing their desire to move politics to a different section the nutters chimed in and their responses were very eye-opening:

I think that having the message board as Gaming + Everything Else is good because what this does is says "OK, on a basic level, you can come here and only engage with the Gaming community. But, if you want to engage with any other level of discussion on this site, you may have to encounter thoughts and opinions that challenge your views and preconceptions"

The staff should really take note that a lot of the posts arguing against it are actually explaining their fears about usability, readability, why it could backfire, scenarios where it makes things worse, and a lot of the posts for this are just "good idea!" or people talking about how this move that's supposed to be for more visibility makes them happy because it directly makes certain things less visible.

The only thing I'd add to that is that considering what is happening in the world at large and in the US more specifically right now, the political threads should be MORE visible, NOT isolated in their own corner where the "head in the sand" people can easily avoid them...

We are not foced to engage in political discussion in the real world and I feel we shouldn't be forced to do so on enthusiast hobby forums either. I do think there IS a place for that, but that it should be quarentined in its own spot so the discussion elsewhere doesn't suffer. ERA is basically the unbearable parts of old GAF that popped up around the last election, only multiplied by an order of magnitude of crazy, and they just will not let it go. It's totally bizarre to me.

If you would take a look at my post history would know that this is not the case. I call it more reporting, but you are right, i do post quite a bit about it. But like i said, it isn't what i am only interested in. You would know if you read through my post history. So why the personal remark, Luke?

If i have to base my opinion on your own post history, since you only registered this Tuesday, as of now, you have only posted in threads that address ERA. Thus, the percentage of your activity in ERA complaint threads is 100%. Given i have more posts, my average is undoubtely less.

Very well written. There is certainly a feeling of oppression and almost a surreal sense of some kind of a dystopian regime holding all the cards. The hate for opposing views is equally matched by the hate for balanced views. Essentially if you are not off the same mind, you are the enemy.

It's clear many are getting by, by simply keeping their heads down, walking on egg shells just to be able to partake in gaming debates. The place is not for like minded gamers, it is for like minded political idealists primarily.

Things are becoming very scary, and I worry for our future generations.

I worry too. Especially since I'm raising two daughters and I want them to be both reasonable and capable of thinking independently. There were ERA users who were against moving politics out of off-topic discussion because they claim that's where they get all of their news. Even people who aren't from the US. I personally can't imagine having my world view shaped by that place. There's never any nuance.

The thing for me is, even if I agree with the thoughts and opinions expressed on ERA, I very rarely agree with the way they express them. They come across as combative and tribalistic. People wait for the correct thoughts and opinions to form on any given subject, then collectively repeat them ad nauseam and the majority of it is never thought-provoking or interesting.
