While coal has its environmental issues, I don't disagree, left-wing support has traditionally come from workers in those industries. Remember, being on the left is about supporting workers. It's also quite common to see state support (if not outright ownership) of certain industries).

Not quite sure what you're on about re austerity, that's very much a right-wing shrink-the-government position, one to which I am strongly opposed. The current Tory government is engaged in ideological austerity and it's doing nothing but harm.

The head of a party is not the only one who decides where a party is positioned. Blair was a neoliberal, wholeheartedly. The neoliberal branch of Labour hasn't vanished, just because a clear left-leaning person is now head of Labour. I call them center-left because of the range they represent, from center-right (e.g. Blair) to clearly left (e.g. Corbyn).

When Labour gets to rule next time and I can observe what they actually do when in charge, I will reevaluate how I see them. As a Briton, you clearly have a better view of them, but I am sceptical about calling them a left party rather than a center-left party for now, because center-left parties tend to appear clearly left as long as they are not in charge and then when they win the election take a position much more closely aligned to neoliberalism.

I would imagine with Corbyn as PM and McDonnell as Chancellor (he's to the left of Corbyn) the big jobs are in the hands of proper socialists. Obviously the challenge is facing the markets but, just as many predicted meltdown with Trump's election and it didn't quite happen, the markets tend to cope OK once reality sets in.

I don't really see what's curious about the story. Could you elaborate on your thoughts a bit? The user is on a heap of meds for mood stabilization and anti-depression. They don't feel good and have traumatic baggage weighing on them. Recreational hard drug use is commonplace with Borderline and Bipolar folks since they're dealing with severe mood problems and often have reckless, self-destructive patterns. Gender studies is an...accommodating...major, and a magnet for troubled individuals.

It's an unfortunate story but if they're in therapy that's something at least.

Recreational hard drug use is commonplace with Borderline and Bipolar folks since they're dealing with severe mood problems and often have reckless, self-destructive patterns. Ok I'm going to ask here, because of where this conversation is heading. What is the big plan here? When you enroll in college or university for a BA with a major in Gender Studies, what is the job you hope to get after Grad? What is going to pay the bills and pay back all that student debt with your Gender Studies degree?

I asked a few people in Sociology that question back when I was in College and none of them really gave me an answer. Now Sociology isn't enough we have these specialized Soc classes that help us to get where?

As an aside to that, I also noticed on days when I'm home from work and watch daytime TV (I'm old, whatever) I noticed that every single student on The Price is Right is a Communications Major. What's up with that? I suspect they all want to work in PR, but eventually you need people to make the stuff your company needs PR for. If everyone works in PR who does the work?

I read the entire thread previous to this. I basically got from it that the person needs psychiatric help, but the person is refusing to get it themselves.

However, as far as the gender studies as choice, you have to understand the person was NOT in college prior to and supposedly only enrolled at the after advice from ResetERA which mindblowingly consisted of basically "you should quit your job and take out a 50 Thousand Dollar loan through a bank to go to school with". It was insanely crazy advice. If the person doesn't commit suicide now hopefully, there is a good chance when they have 50k in loans coming up for payment with massive amounts of interest that they cannot afford that they very well could.

So, now to the choice of class. Why do you think the person chose gender studies of all choices? (Hint: Probably because all the people pming him with help are from ResetERA and suggested it).

And, if I am right, it just goes to show that the platform is more concerned with advancing their beliefs than the person's life. When they should have been suggesting trade schools or such in the scenario, if you were gonna suggest any schooling at all, they pushed towards their advancement of beliefs.

I don't know what to make of it other than that's a weirdly conflicted and fucked up situation. I am also geniunely at odds if this bloke is serious or not given his statements. Was posted Jan 14 but nearly a month later OP is still here.

Scientist (in the gender sciences), diversity officer (you need a lot of those), politics (not primarily as politicians, but as policymakers / advisors), book author, journalist.

It is what it is classified as, no? Of course it is not comparable to math / cs / physics / chemistry / biology, but if other branches of sociology are regarded as science, why would I leave out gender studies? Because I do not agree with the methods and a portion of the claims made? I will question questionable scientific conduct, as I have done, by the way in the topic about the hoax publications, but arbitrarily denying the classifier of scientist for the job as scientist at a university just does not appear right to me. The only thing I do that to is theology and even then, in a list of potential jobs, I would probably still have called it scientist.

I know that just "science" often is used in English to only refer to natural and structural sciences (which I would be fine with by the way), but the usage of scientist was a bit more liberal in my observation. In German, the word "Wissenschaftler" (which is the literal translation of scientist) refers to all fields of research universities offer, including even theology.

Given none of those subjects can produce a reproducible experiment to save their lives, due to the impossibility of isolating data sufficiently to actually perform an experiment (human beings are so complex as to make it a nightmare of extra variables, groups of humans are even worse). Science should be restricted to that which follows the scientific method of experiments which anyone can follow and reproduce to a near-guaranteed and agreed result.

Experiments are the method of empirical sciences, but mathematics and (theoretical) computer science do not allow for experiments, in fact, if you were to make a mathematical statement, justified by experimental data, you would have a hard time getting that published*. Would you still classify mathematics and theoretical computer science as sciences? What I want to say with this (I assume you answer to the previous question is a clear yes) is, that different levels of formality of sciences allow for different levels of certainty and rigorisity. It is important keep in mind the different levels of reliability of the results though - basically
- structural / formal sciences: If no errors occured 100% certainty
- natural sciences: very reliable for the specific phenomena investigated, but uncertainties arise when the theory is applied to related phenomena (though this is of course related to the important technique of falsification)
- humanities: Spotty, because it relies on individual and cultural backgrounds, so meta studies play an important role here, almost comparable to falsification. Only by looking at enormous data sets analysed under different angles can one receive reasonable certainty (which is why linking a single study in social sciences is hugely problematic)
- theology: It is all hogwash because it is based on a false premise about an objective truth.

* The exception is talking about usefullness of a mathematical theory in an applicational field.

Mathematics is mathematics and no, computer stuff isn't science. Simple. Over-use of the label of 'science' and the expectations that go with it, and the kudos that goes with it, have given credence to some absolute shit-shows, employment psychology being one of my pet peeves.

Re theology - I'd argue that's more study of mythology than anything else, with a side-order of philosophy and history (as it's useful to think of the times in which things happened or are purported to have happened so as to understand its full context).
