Police investigating the disappearance of YouTuber Etika have found a body in New York City's East River.

The body has yet to be formally identified. Police say the investigation is continuing.

The gamer, 29, whose real name is Desmond Amofah, was reported missing six days ago. His belongings, including his Nintendo Switch, were found on Manhattan Bridge on Monday .

He had uploaded an eight-minute YouTube video in which he talked about suicide.

Who is Etika?
Etika joined YouTube in 2012.

He is best known for his reaction videos, where he responded to new releases and products, mainly from games giant Nintendo.

The 29-year-old has worried his followers with his behaviour on social media in the past, with the police called to his home following a suicide threat .

Hope it's not him, would be devastating if it is.

UPDATE
NYPD has confirmed Etika has been found, deceased. Rest in peace Desmond

Did this guy have a history of mental illness? He always seemed a bit unhinged whenever I watched his reaction videos.

What a tragedy though. RIP.

Woah this was the guy bullied by Era?
I;d like to know the details too what lead to this.

Social media strikes again.

Emotionally unstable people have to get off the net. Not saying it's because he died due to cyber bullying (unproven), but with the way some people will tell the world they are going to off themselves it just leads to more people doing the same.

That's why a city's bus and subway system will never say a delay is due to a jumper, nor does the media often get reports a guy jumped in front of a train. They don't want copycats.

If emotionally unstable people can get off the net, it might make them feel better and also not lead to others copying them later.

RIP.

27 pages of shitting on him for having mental health problems and making nasty memes at his expense, mod endorsed:

Oh man. I can't say I followed him but I loved this guy's Xenoblade Chronicles 2 reaction vids. Such a shame.

Didn't like his videos at all, but still sad anytime someone doesn't get the help they need. RIP.

WTF? How did this happen? I know Etika was going through a lot and had problems in terms of mental health, but didn't anyone close to him try to get him to seek help? This was completely unneeded and shocking and sad. :goog_crying:

R.I.P Etika. I always loved watching him, especially when it came to Nintendo stuff. He always could bring a smile to your face. The world is poorer without Etika.

I have no experience with his stuff but its always awful to see some go out that way. I've had loved ones who attempted suicide and I'm fortunate that they didnt manage to succeed.

Really wish the guy could have gotten the help he needed.

what the fuck is wrong with those people? How are so many industry people still hanging in that place? Jesus.. I did not follow Etika's drama nor cared much about it but still sad to hear he killed himself. RIP.

What did Era do to him?

They just treated him like everyone else they consider problematic. He had a history of using words that they didn't like. Every time he did something they didnt like they'd have a yikes-fest.

Poor guy. I've struggled with suicidal thoughts enough to go to a hospital, so I know how he felt. It's just a shame he couldn't find peace in life.

RIP. I didn't watch much of his stuff but it's always sad to see these stories. Social Media played a big part, no doubt.

The world is a bit dimmer today.

I hope that if there is another world out there after we perish from this one, that you find peace there. Rest in peace, man. :(

Yep. As I've said before, things like the mental health community thread on Era and here before are very dangerous. Yes, they have some well meaning people offering support, but they largely aren't professionals. And it's never good for a suicidal teen or 20 something to see posts from 30-40+ year olds saying they're suicidal and things never get better etc.

People who have severe mental health issues need to get professional help and stay away from social media and forums that are rampant with other mentally ill and toxic, bullying people.

I'm a pretty "got my shit together" person and I've been much happier with severely cutting back my online presence this year and already feeling ill effects of reengaging too much while recovering from surgery on my arm a couple weeks back. I couldn't imagine having severe depression, anxiety etc and spending as much time online as these people do.

Well, as a general statement to those who love the net and have issues and personal demons, guess what?

For every awesome fun pic you see of a friend on Facebook is hidden info they will never post............ got fired, getting divorced, wife took the money, separated parents fighting for child custody, lives like a slob, went to casino a blew a pay cheque etc......

People only show the happy cool stuff.

Not as many people you see on social media are as rich and happy as those pics you see.

This is utterly heartbreaking. Fuck anyone on ResetEra and anywhere else that cheered this on or brushed it aside. Pieces of shit don't deserve to breathe.

Very sad. Mental health issues and internet fame must be a horrible combination. Sadly I think it's very common.

True. It's basically used by some people to be a decoration, a substitute of a very impoverished life, be it wealth, health, or other aspects. Some people go so far as to completely lose themselves into this phantasm called social media, where they cannot even distinguish reality from unreality anymore; the real world becomes an illusion and the illusion the real.

Social media is also designed to depress people, and turn them into addicts, literally. It should've been outlawed ages ago, but there's a lot of money involved, so it's not going to happen. That is unless people are voluntarily resigning themselves from this nonsense. It's destroying people.

Man, internet can really be a shitty place sometimes.

Didnt know the dude but I wish this could be avoided. RIP.

Rest in peace Etika, and thank you for all the memes you brought to the Nintendo community. At such a young age to kill yourself ( 29 years ), you had so much to live for. :messenger_pensive:

Man, RIP. Don't know the guy but I watched some of his content on occasion. Seemed like a cool dude, though...

I've only watched a few of his videos because they were not aimed at me but this is still extremely sad. RIP

I think that this may have a lot to do with how the algorithm more or less pulls people in, they get way less recommendation if they don't produce a lot of content on a daily basis.

And well, all the attention seekers get on those platforms as well, want it or not it may tip the scale the wrong way for many.

This is my opinion, it may not be 100% accurate (it's not).
