I had a cornea transplant yesterday

Well now we need to know the details of what led up to this, you can't just casually come up and say "hey GAF I just had cornea surgery" .

I have an eye condition called Keratoconus, which is a thinning of the cornea. In my right eye it's just mild, so I'm just nearsighted in that eye which is fixed with glasses. In my left eye it was more severe, so I was legally blind in that eye.

It's only a day after the surgery and I can already see better out of the left eye. It takes 18 months for it to fully heal though, and that's how long the stitches have to stay in.

My eye colour is dark green but the left is now a lighter, brighter green with blood around it. It's kind of creepy looking.

Maybe matt meant that there's no difference between a Pies supporter and someone on drugs??

Of course, now that you can see more clearly, perhaps you'll begin supporting a better club.

Go Hawks!!

And I'm posting on the forums today. That's tough!

Still a bit groggy from the anesthesia and drugs but everything seems to have gone OK.

Good job mate and happy recovery.
while eyesight might be impaired I recommend ATARI JAGUAR : IRON SOLDIER

It is a really really awesome game and the graphichs are so blurry yoiu might not even tell a difference
from your replacement-eyes-shit.

Just for that, the Pies are gonna thump the Hawks next week.

Even though North are beating us this week. :messenger_confused:

I meant you'd have to be on drugs to follow AFL.

♥️ BC glad you're ok bud

We need a pic dude.

I had a similar surgery for that condition, they had so scrape some layers of skin of my iris

Thanks for the well wishes.

I'm still kind of out of it due to the anesthesia, so I'm not so tough today. I might post a pic in a day or two.

Here are my post surgery serial killer eyes, about 10 minutes after getting the bandages removed, which was about 12 hours after the surgery.

Edit: Put the eye pics behind the spoiler tags because I will be bumping this thread in the future and don't want to see them every time I come in here.

Bumpity bump.

Guess what? Gotta have a cornea transplant again in a bit under 2 weeks. The hospital got a bad batch of corneas and I was one of the 18 people that got one of them. Yay.

The vision in the dud cornea is a lot better than the old one, but it's still very blurry, just a smoother blurry.

Second op done and back home. It seems to have gone OK.

Had to stay overnight in the hospital with this one. Stuck in a room with 6 strangers, my favourite thing...

One guy was a 67yo Sri Lankan who was hitting on the nurses and talking and singing a lot. He was the first to fall asleep and snored like a chainsaw and made really weird noises all night, never heard anything like it. The guys next to me got earplugs from the nurses.

He also talked in his sleep and 2 of the things I could hear was "Oh yeah. Come to daddy. Come to daddy!" and "Piece of shit."

Soy boy alert! (for Papa Papa & Cunth Cunth )

The dude next to me got a cup of tea with his dinner and asked for soy milk. He also said he was on his way to becoming a vegan.

Did he used a tag with his pronouns by any chance?

Anyways, I'm glad that's over for you for now. I hope these corneas work. Ahh stitches? you have stitches on your eye? :messenger_hushed:

Nah, he was 50 and bald. Not the typical soy drinker.

Thanks crowbrow. And yes, stitches in the eye to hold the cornea in place. They don't hurt but until the skin grows over them (takes a couple of weeks) I can feel them against the eyelid, which causes some discomfort.

I can't even put eyedrops without cringing
Get ready to cringe then! At the moment I have to put a steroid eyedrop which stops rejection once an hour and a anti-bacterial one every 2 hours. Not the best fun.

After the first surgery I had to squirt an anti-bacterial ointment every 2 hours, which was like putting Vaseline on your eye.

It's kind of creepy looking.

My brother had 2 cornea surgeries made at the same time and it was ruff (not the same symptomes), you have to go multiple times to get bit by bit some of the stitches and my brother still got some stuck that can't be removed :messenger_pensive:, anyway you should stop looking at the screen too much and let it rest.

Sorry to hear about your complications. I also have keratoconus (left eye) and had crosslinking surgery a couple of years ago, which stopped it from worsening but didn't really improve the vision either. I hope this second time goes better for you!

I had a work colleague that did that surgery ( about 20 years ago) . At the time it required many stitches in the eye and they could only remove 1 per month because of the risk of disrupting the internal eye pressure or something like that . Only after removing all stitches from one eye they would start the process for the second (finding a donor, etc).
Is it still done like that?

Glad your surgery went well. Looking forward to being able to call you Mrs. Jones soon.

Is it still done like that?
No, the stitches stay in for 18 months and are then all taken out. With this surgery they had to take the other cornea plus stitches out before putting the new one in and there has been no eye pressure problem.

I don't know how long they need to wait to do the other eye. I only needed it in my left eye so there's been no mention of it.

Had my 3rd eye operation in a bit over 6 months today. Yay!

It was done under local anesthetic, so I was awake during it. I felt some pain during the surgery. When they were slicing my eye and when the suture was being put in. I could have asked for more pain meds or numbing eye drops but by that stage I just wanted it over as quick as possible so put up with it. Great fun...

Surprised I didn't see this when you 1st posted it since I had a transplant on March 16th 2019, also for keratoconus but for the right eye.
Right after I took off the patch from the Initial surgery. Taken April 6th.

My stitches after finding out they were loosening. Taken May 13th.

Right after the surgery to tighten the stitches, was awake for this surgery. Taken May 24th.

Eye was healing uneven, the left and right side of the eye were healing quicker then the top and bottom, so I went back in to have another surgery to correct it, also awake. Taken December 11th.

I can take a current picture if anyone wants to see it, still bloody just nowhere near as bad.

That last pic looks awesome.

I just took the pad and shield off to put some eye drops in. They told me I would have a black eye because they accidentally nicked something during the surgery but I thought it was going to be a bit lighter looking.

God speed mate.
Did you get any better after the first two surgeries?
Why do you need a third one?
Is this the final surgery before you are all good?

(You are braver than me. I could never let a blade come anywhere near my eyeballs or my penis. No matter the circumstances or concequences)

Wow, didn't expect that type of bruising, must have nicked something hard. My eye drops are Prednisolone for the steroid and Ofloxacin for the antibiotic, are yours the same?

When you have a second transplant, a bit of the first one gets left behind and eventually it hardens and effects the eyesight. After the second surgery, the eyesight was a lot better and over time it gradually got blurrier

This should be the last surgery.

The steroid is the same, only it's called Prednefrin Forte. The antibiotic is Chlorsig, which might be different.

Got to put them in every 2 hours again. It had dropped back to every 4 hours.
