The Last of Us Part 2 Co-Writer Says Naughty Dog Are “Wizards” And Talks About “The Impact of Violence

According to The Last of Us Part 2 co-writer Halley Gross, Naughty Dog is continuing to show its magical touch. Speaking recently in an interview with the Official PlayStation Magazine in their December 2019 issue (Issue 168), Gross talked about the work that Naughty Dog is going to "make the most complex, nuanced character in a video game", before calling them "wizards."

"This is the longest job I've ever had in my life," she said. "Every day I'm working, I get the opportunity to work with designers, and animators, and sound guys and character artists, and we're all working toward a vision about how do you make the most complex, nuanced character in a video game?

"Everybody's putting their particular smarts toward that, and you get to just watch these incredibly brilliant people and go, 'How the **** does your brain work?' Wizards. They're wizards."

This is fine in the context of an interview, paying homage to the technical proficiency of the studio and your peers/colleagues.

'...and we're all working toward a vision about how do you make the most complex, nuanced character in a video game?'

This is just self-fellatio and one of the small number of reasons why people are eye rolling more at the more narcisstic traits that come out the studio. The more pertinent question should be 'how do you achieve that without heavy handed melodrama or maudlin overtures', and 'how do you do that without reducing player agency or making your games heavily dependent on non gameplay exposition'. And it can be done, this is not snobbery - RDR2 imo (though I'm not a huge fan), raised the bar for both these elements, which is surprising when compared to GTA V.

"I work at X and X are good". News at 11.

Look I know everybody is excited for TLOU2. But this is stupid, we don't need a thread every other day. Something positive was said about Xbox the other day and Sony Gaf shit itself.

The game looks great. ND are awesome devs. Water is wet.

With that Uncharted 4 expansion and how Last of Us 2 seems to be I'd imagine they are full of "White Knights" also.

"More diversity, homosexuality, and female empowerment for our next game m'lady?"

I don't know why XboxGAF think they're special when it comes to people coming into their threads and shitting on it. XboxGAF does it all the time, too.

The OP makes post similar to Xbox.

Whatever they're doing, it really shows.

Animations, attention to detail that was shown in TLOU is ahead of many other developers out there.

Man people in this thread couldn't be bothered to google her? shes a screen writer who wrote some episodes of West world not a ND employee.

If they are complex and nuanced like nate brother or the villains in unchy4 i can't wait to skip all the cutscene with them :ROFLMAO:

What is narcistic about setting that as a goal?

People are looking for reasons to complain.

I believe this is the first game she has worked on and brought in as a writer for TLOU Part II. She is no doubt going to be impressed.

With Uncharteds 2, 3, 4, Lost Legacy, TLOU and TLOU Part 2, I'd have to agree

Pffff after todays delay this game has me as excited as another 4 years of justin turdodo.

Both can go fuck em selfs

If by wizards they mean mid-tier TV directors then sure. They don't do anything special with the medium of gaming narratively.
