No it's not the same at all, a game being too horrible and clunky to finish is understandable, I'm not going to judge him when I can't even finish watching a gameplay demo of DS for 10 minutes without passing out from boredom. How many people who reviewed Superman 64 finished it?

If you're a professional games reviewer, playing the good, the bad and the ugly comes with the territory. As a professional, you don't just nope out of a game because you have no fun in playing it. Reviewing bad games is equally as important as reviewing the good ones, maybe even more since it's your obligation to warn customers of subpar products. Nobody is really disappointed if they accidentally buy a good game.
If reviewing games is your job, you don't get to choose only the good games. That's like being a gynecologist and only examining the hot chicks.

No big loss, it's not like it matters if they review it at this point, it's already established as a very good, mid 80's rated game.
The game isn't to everyone's liking, so if Edge didn't like it and doesn't want to review it, fair enough. It actually works in the games favour, as Edge is pretty weighted on MC, so no bad review from them, means it doesn't drop to a lower score.

I agree and im well aware of it which is why I don't give two shits about "critic reviews" whatsoever but I do find it hilarious when I see a critic like Edge say something like, "the embargo requires us to finish the game before reviewing". LMAO. Shouldn't EVERY game have this in it embargo?

The score is irrelevant, it could be a 1. I don't care about DS, but single player games or single player campaigns should be played to the end before being reviewed, it's what reviewers are paid for, complaining that they are required to finishing a game is just admitting that they are fucking lazy.

Its a weird position to take in my opinion. But if the reviewer thinks the game is boring or crappy, I don't blame him for not wanting to play more of it. Still though, I would think the better track is to assign someone else. But my opinion does not mean the outlet is wrong for their differing position.

If you are a profissional reviewer you should play good, ugly, and bad games... you are not a gamer that gamer that have the choice... you are being payed to do a job.
BTW DS has a 84 Meta now... there are more scores with 9+ than 8-.
I'm sure a bad game may not reach these scores

I think it shows a lot about the workforce culture. In Japan, jobs are taken much more seriously. Japan also focuses on working for one company for the rest of their life. American culture is basically to have as many jobs possible and change it up because you get bored of doing one particular task. I think we're seeing a similar difference in how people feel about Death Stranding's game play elements.

Honestly that all reads like a child throwing a temper tantrum. I think it's fair to say not EVERY game needs to be completed in order to provide a review.
That being said, I honestly think the kind of game it is really matters. I can't help but be reminded of Red Dead Redemption 2 considering I enjoyed the game, thought it was a good sequel, but somewhere in the middle I felt burnt out and almost gave up. When I pushed through that point, it immediately picked up and ended up becoming my GOTY in a heart beat.
My understanding here, at least from the reviews I HAVE watched, is that completing it is pretty damn important. Well, and if you can't get there, then it's just not for you.
I'm sure if the game focused more on bang bang pew pew this dude would've suddenly been able to finish it.

What do you mean by "deserves" as if the game is objectively bad? This is a silly statement that I see time and time again. I never thought to myself "yeah, this game deserves less" in terms of review scores unless it's blatantly pandering to SJW agendas.

To be honest, he should be obliged to finish it but I do think he should give a score based on his personal opinion, including why he never finished it.
I don't think this game will be great, but it deserves to be treated with respect regardless of the names attached to it.

He... literally gets paid to play and review games. The big story is the implication here that Edge is fine releasing a review for a story based game with an ending, without seeing it through to the ending (not 100%'ing even, just the critical path). It follows that Edge reviews, especially ones by this guy, probably shouldn't be trusted. It's one thing for an end user to pass judgemet on a game and tell their friends it sucks without completing it, but for a professional review outlet to do this; very unprofessional.

My understanding is most of the time game reviewers are expected to actually play the games in their own time. So no, they likely arent being paid to play it. And expecting them to put nearly 2 work weeks worth of hours into something for free is ridiculous. 40 hours is more than enough time to form an opinion. Most of the people who play the game would drop it in less than 4 if its shit.

I thought it was common knowledge that reviewers don't take the time to complete games before reviewing them? Mainly because games journalists don't care about games enough to take the time to learn how to complete a game.

It's common, sure. Some games are not even supposed to ever be finished.
What isn't common is embargoes where finishing the game is a requirement.
I don't necessarily have an issue with that.
For the overall trustworthiness of reviews I think it reveals something I don't like to see.
I don't want to see a 10/10 review for a story based game where the reviewer never completed the game. Same for a 4/10 etc.
Even if I personally don't care for the review it cannot be good, in the long run, if many purchases are based on reviews and many reviews are not to be trusted.
In this situation I think its fine if they say "look its an 80 hour game and I had less than 2 weeks to review it and I don't work more than 40 hours per week".
That's not what's going on here. Other reviewers seem to have done just fine and the best ones have even managed to give a measured and thoughtful take on the game.
Yet, somehow, this guy can't even get through the game despite being paid to do so? It seems bad to me.
Like there's a big game coming out so he'll try to make a name for himself with some firey hot take.
I'm just not buying that for someone who reviews video games for a living this game is somehow unplayable and therefore unreviewable.
Though as someone who does not give Edge any of my money I don't suppose I have any right to say "they should review it".
I just think that overall this damages any kind of credibility that these reviewers have and that's not a good thing.
