Just finished reading it. What a glorious novel. Can't wait to start part 2.

Any of you read these? The writing is incredible. Sharp dialogue, insightful introspection, good pacing. And the worldbuilding, wew lad.

Yeah it's still one of the greats. I think book 1 and 2 make a perfect pair and you can see just how influential the books have been on the sci-fi world once you finish the second one.

wonderful book, not so great but still strangely good movie

People give it a lot of shit but tbh I thought it wasn't a bad adaptation. Plus Lynch did a great job with the weirdness.

Looking forward to Denis Villienues version which I think should be landing next year

I keep meaning to start the series. What's the consensus on the point you should read up to?

Dune ✅

Dune Messiah 🆗 but thankfully it's short so power through

Children of Dune ✅

Beyond that...up to you tbh. I can't say I found any of the later books that memorable. if you're looking for a decent Sci-Fi book series to read after those I recommend Gene Wolfe's The Book of the New Sun series

The Lynch movie was too literal. Film is a visual medium. You can't have people standing around thinking their thoughts like they do in the book lol. If a character is angry or apprehensive or joyous, these are things the actors can convey in facial/body language.

I am concerned about how the knife duels will be portrayed in the new movie since they are so numerous. Off the top of my head you have
- Paul vs Gurney
- Jessica vs Stilgar
- Paul vs Jamis
- Feyd vs Slave
- Paul vs Feyd

You can't really do it realistic shank style since some of these duels end with no casualties. And if you draw it out long with a bunch of dodging it ends up looking like an overly choreographed Michael Jackson music video. I dunno.

Don't waste time with the prequels book. They are not super bad, but just some very shallow history to lead to the first book.

Only ever saw the Lynch movie.

Absolutely enamored by the dark baroque / rococo take on sci-fi. Villeneuve's version can't come soon enough.

Now to groove to that one Dune-themed early Dream Theater song:

Someone needs to tell Paul to chill the fuck out and enjoy some spice.

Been interested in the series for a while now. Think I'll ask the wife for these for Christmas.

Ian McNeice will always be the best Vladimir Harkonen in my eyes. I'm curious to see how they handle his homosexuality, penchant for rape, and his former perfect physique.

boo, house Ordos, fakenews that's from the RTS series

you should try putting the Dune 2000 and Emperor Battle for Dune soundtracks on in the background while reading, they're awesome
might not fit tonally though

I know Funcom is working on a MMO Dune (or an 'open world mutiplayer' not sure If thsts an MMO 🤷🏻‍♂️)

Not that I have any faith in Funcom but I'm at least intrested in seeing what they come up with.

I read it in my early teens, then re-read it a lot later. It's my favourite sci-fi book and one of my favourite books overall, I love Herbert's writing style. Never bothered with the sequels though, I heard too many mixed things about them and didn't want to ruin my impression of the first one.

oh hell yeah dune thread, finally something we agree on sub

That's the best scene of the movie tbh. It's kinda downhill from there. I mean, it's okay...

Wow, my opinion is a stark contrast. Some parts of the writing are sharp, sure, and some of the ideas interesting, but so much of it was... old.

The Harkonnens are like the most obviously evil evil dudes I've seen in a long time. Their leader is literally an obese man in a chair who lusts for supple, young boys. There's no subtlety at all in his writing. Like some of the ideas in Dune, I felt that there were original ideas there but they've long been mined in the 50+ years since publication.

So, Dune was the inspiration for future writers of the time to draw inspiration from and expand.

To be fair they make it a point that being Harkonnen in of itself doesn't make you evil. That obese freakshow is
father to Jessica and grandfather to Paul.

But yea they are depicted cartoonishly evil.

I liked the Dune mini series much more than the movie, even with the low budget effects. Hoping the new film will be at least as good as Bladerunner 2049.

I don't feel that dune as I imagined it while reading the books has ever been done justice. All the versions created feel "hokey" to me.

Just finished reading the second book from the time of this post to when I made this thread. Much shorter.

That was good but yeah it feels less like a sequel and more like an interlude. A bridge to the real sequel.

Certain scenes weren't covered in much detail and certain scenes were covered in way too much detail:
A sandworm being stolen and brought to another planet? Just mentioned in a passing sentence.
Chani and Paul finally learning they will actually conceive children? Casually referenced off-the-cuff.
Another Paul/Alia prescient acid trip? Breh we gotta spend 5 pages to describe this shit.

Good story. Just weirdly structured. Onto part 3!

The further parts are geting more into weirdness and political intrigue so deepthat it makes GOT look like kid friendly tale :) If you enjoy that you will enjoy them - otherwise they are not so great.

Yea I don't mind not having the adventure or action of the first book. All the talking and thinking in Messiah was great. The different factions of the Tleilaxu, Bene Gesserit, Guild, and disgruntled Fremen plotting together. Absolute kino.
