After lurking for 1.5 years I joined here back in 2016 when things were at their worst. At that time, the majority of active users with clout were terrible people who weren't here to discuss but just preach their word as gospel of the highest order. Topics were filled with the "my way or the highway" sort of discussions where those users in cahoots with the mods at the time would ban bait others whose viewpoints did not match theirs. Further it was honestly very tiring to post here because their mocking/preaching really didn't help produce discussions of value and they were only here to insult you or "argue" in bad faith. After the exodus things massively changed for the better and for the first time, I could actually post on NG and engage in actual discussions.

Now if all of them come back here by the tons, things will just revert back to that era (pun intended) and there's only so much the new moderation team can do. While a few users in this topic made a good point about people changing over the years, the bad bunch that left have only further regressed from what I see. Out of the willingly/unwillingly banned RE refugees, about 90% that have joined/rejoined here have done so with bad intentions. Thankfully the majority of the remaining ones have been good so there's that. Best to err on the side of caution.

I look at this from a more practical point of view -- this place needs more traffic. The only thing REE has over GAF is traffic. I still read REE simply because it's a good news aggregate due to how much traffic it gets. GAF used to be the same way. Because of that, letting this guy and others back in shouldn't even be up for debate, imo. Even the ones who posted porn account suicides should be let back in if they say they won't do it again. Take them for their word and if they do it again or are obvious trolls trying to get a rise out of the community, simply perm the account. Start them off on thin ice.

The identity this place has formed over the past year isn't going to diminish if you let these people back in because the staff / leadership is what ultimately cultivates the identity of a community like this, just like how REE's staff cultivated an insane asylum (same with the Bish and Besada types from pre-REE GAF). Just my opinion.
 
My opinion in this case:
While account suiciding was stupid and uncalled for, he didn't actually insult anyone.
So I'd let him back, watch him for a while and give him a humiliating tag.

Those other cunts who crawl back who called EL a rapist and insulted NeoGAF as a whole back then can go fuck themselves, though.
 
I always saw statham as an obvious huge Xbox fanboy. However his posts on here were always light hearted and overall harmless. Some of the over the top fanboys have genuine malice in their posts and that was never him. Let him back I say.

Although all the normal people at reeeeeera should just come back anyway on your 'own terms', not waiting until you get a perma ban before returning. That's weak!

Also - I propose an official system wars thread for the loonies to argue in. Then promote better conversation in all the other threads 👌
 
I'm back too. I have to say, I am glad to be able to post without fear of getting banned for using the wrong words/offending someone. It's like walking on LEGO mixed with glass shards over there.

For the sake of full disclosure I'm back after being permed on Era as well - although I didn't shit the bed on my way out of Gaf, and felt that everyone really jumped the gun. It's more that the two community threads I was involved with jumped ship, so I jumped with them. Sorry.

For all the comments about harsh moderation here (and accepting that there was a lot of bullshit) I've never racked up a single infraction here, whereas I got three warnings/suspensions on Era for making a school shooter joke, a joke about a failed airport bombing (nobody hurt, letter bomb that didn't even go off) and, lastly two weeks for saying just 'All cops' in a TaySan thread where he was telling the mods they were doing a good job. I thought that was bullshit, and got permed for making an alt so I could follow the DJMax thread and a couple of others while suspended.

Edit: as for the pattern comment, the reason my second suspension was so long was for a 'history of similar infractions' - meaning the one previous warning.

It's a free country, no worries. This call out is entirely because of the account suicide OP back in 2017, when everyone was doing garbage like this to disrupt all discussions and try to drive GAF into the ground.

GAF is currently in a sweet spot. Activity is good. Plenty of new threads/news. Threads move fast enough. We are lacking very little.

I feel like the people longing for more activity are mostly REEEfugees addicted to the lightning speed threads with one word posts and little to no substance or proper conversation.

I don't want that back. REEE can have that autism bullshit.

More traffic. More people. More views. More exchanges of ideas. These are all good things. I want to see more active community threads. More active music threads. I love musical instruments. I can't play any worth a shit but I like reading stuff from people who can. More active threads from people in other countries. I travel round S.A every chance I get. It's good to get information from the locals down there. For that to happen Gaf needs more traffic and I'm sure it'll come.
 
In all fairness, maybe tossing around autism as an insult isn't the best form. There are other ways to get your point across without using it. I've been guilty of doing it and it's something I'm working on avoiding.
