sardines are expensive as hell

90

i don't get it

$3 for just 4 oz (some even $5 for 4 oz)

these must be infesting the ocean in astronomical numbers, right?

they seem highly sustainable if only they'd price them like $1 for 4 oz

what a powerhouse of nutrition though

do you fucks with sardines?

I love sardines. I haven't had a tin for a long time, though. I think we got ours from Costco. Maybe they were more reasonable there. Where are you sourcing your sards?

this is so much more reasonably priced

wtf is wrong with my area

Whatever you buy you are also paying a small portion of the rent or property taxes of the business, and the rent of the owners and workers. The more expensive it is to live in an area, the more expensive it will be to buy products in that area.

Living in New York is an incredibly luxury for some reason I'm not clear on. I choose to remain ignorant of such things, and simply assume that the stereotypes are true, it's a land occupied by the descendants of snobby british people, and they are snobby, rude, and have poor manners while being loud and wearing nice suits.

Yeah, here you go – it's six 4.375 oz tins for about eleven bucks (depending on your area).

there we go 🤩

i can buy an entire pound of ground beef for like $5 so it's just weird seeing 4 oz of sardines costing $3-5

i'm just gonna get them when they're on sale

Sardines are pretty much common man food here in the Philippines. You can get them fresh but most of the time we buy the canned versions which are pretty cheap. The ones with tomato sauce are pretty much the standard version you can get. Cook them with soy sauce and vinegar and you've got a satisfying meal for any time of the day. Though for the most part we eat them for breakfast with either bread or rice.

I much prefer the spicy ones in corn syrup.

I've grown into believing that canned foods like these could cause cancer,

I loved canned sardines with tomato sauce, but my parents won't let me eating them anymore because of the so-called cancer risk and also worm infested canned sardines fiasco in my country that happened three years ago

Ate sardines today for lunch.

Bought fresh this morning (whole), we cleaned them up and then shallow fried in flour. Delicious.

Bought for $9 per kilo. Or, 26c per oz.

Thats 17c US!

It's a bit of price gouging since tuna is more popular so sardines just sit on the shelf and are sold more as a specialty item for $3. But also as a side effect they do seem to get all the bullshit certifications like wild caught sustainable gmo free labeling. But also they are more regularly canned in healthy olive oil rather than soybean oil. The one linked from Australia is caught in Thailand and packed in soybean oil so it's appropriately priced.

I haven't made this before but could be pretty good.

Sardines are the rats of the sea. I do have them as a snack, but typically only in summer and if I'm near a beach somewhere. Unfortunately my local supermarket has them mainly in tins with all sorts of nasty sauces I don't care for. When they are fresh and fried they can be delicious!

Buy bulk if you eat them regularly. My local stores stock a variety but they are priced like a luxury good and not a cheap meat (which they are).

And yeah they're delicious. An easy dinner is a can of sardines and a hearty chunk of bread.

I love sardines. I had a sardine salad yesterday.

My favorite brand from big stores is King Oscar.

But if you want a treat, you can try a brand like this.

They take such care and pride in their process. I love businesses like this.

We can get them cheap here, usually on a 4 for $5 thing, but those are the low quality ones where you can find some nasty surprises in the guts.

The more expensive ones are cleaner and I tend to go for those.

But yeah, I love sardines. Occasionally the fish market has them fresh and also has a wood smoked option.

I bought sardines for about $2 a tin. It's still crazy expensive compared to chicken or beef. I never understood why either.

My mom loves them and I get them when I do her groceries ..they are like $2 a tin or less most of the time . She lives in NJ so I'm sure it's cheaper than here in NYC but I wouldn't know cause I can't even smell seafood without having breathing problems .

Rats of the sea??? The smaller the fish the less Mercury they have and sardines are full of vital nutrients like b12 and vitamin d and precious Omega 3s. Sardines are like on the top of the list of the seafood that u shld eat. Fresh is always better than canned of course.

Anyways I don't really eat seafood. Lol

Canned sardines gave me an explosive diarrhea/vomiting when I was young. I still don't eat those (I'm 35). Otherwise they're fine.

I never said you should not eat them. The rats of the sea analogy has to do with their behaviour and nothing to do with their taste. Actually, I've never knowingly eaten rats so not sure how they taste. In any case if you don't eat much fish you definitely should eat more ;)
