I went to the Opera

So I decided to put together a really high end evening for our anniversary.

This weekend I took my wife to Chicago to the Lyric Opera to see Madama Butterfly, by Puccini. It was our 16th Anniversary. We had a nice dinner first at an Italian place called Nonnina. Our seats were the best seats you can get at the Lyric, in a center private box. They were $579 each, so it was hard for me to get over the sticker shock and even make the purchase of 1100+ dollars after all the fees and shit for one night of entertainment. I mean, that is almost what we pay for our Kentucky Football season tickets, just for one night! I wore my nicest lawyer suit, my wife looked gorgeous in a red dress, with a black sequined jacket. I got the hotel to have a bottle of champagne on ice waiting for us when we got back. I'm the man.

The show was amazing. Obviously, being at the Lyric means that for being a singer or musician, that is like the elite level. These people are like the NFL level of singers. (Its so crazy, they fill that giant place with their voices with no amplification!) The story is super dark, a story of love and betrayal and death. It is super interesting seeing an Italian opera that features the story of an American sailor falling in love with a Japanese woman in the late 1800s. We are so used to media reflecting our view of the world, it is interesting seeing how a European understood (or misunderstood) Americans and Japanese. Some of the lines about American adventurers and swashbucklers going around the world "wherever we want" come off really funny today. "Butterfly," the main character comments on the "fat and lazy" Japanese Gods, who are slow to answer prayers, hidebound and traditional...and the American God who moves quick and rewards his followers. I think Puccini was contrasting dynamic 19th Century Anglo-American Protestantism just as much with Catholic Europe as with Japan.

Anyway I highly recommend the experience. Most of the time I would just want that Punk Rock show and Old Styles, but we all need to broaden our horizons sometimes. (...and impress girls, even our wives.)

16 years and still going strong, you're the man. Sounds like you had a great time. I imagine the prices are so high since it must take a lot out of those singers. I can't see them doing such performances often. Sometimes I get asked to try the Beijing opera, but I'd have to get wasted to even consider it

Oh dude you should go for that. I don't even know if there is a big tradition of opera in China or Asia in General...? Do they do their own works or western ones? Are you Chinese or an expat?

Not a fan of opera personally, but me and my wife have been to the symphony / orchestra on several occasions and always found it enjoyable. We've raised kids together so there have been a lot of hectic moments and exhausting times, so it's nice to make plans to dress up and go out together sometimes if for no reason other than to reconnect.

Now that our kids are grown and moved out / moving out, I expect we'll get a lot more chances to do stuff like this soon.

congrats on the 16 years of marriage :) , I do not think opera would be for me but who knows if I get to 16 years of marriage I Might try it but not at those prices, would rather use that amount of money to go on a nice holiday.. sorry of subject, you know what you earnt that night at the opera. more power to you :)

Anything with a professional live orchestra is always great.
I'm glad you had a great time OP and congratz on 16 years.

I just found strange that it cost you so much though.
You can find decent Opera tickets in where i'm from for around 70 Dollars.

In China, they have traditional Peking Opera... Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung are graduates and veterans of Peking Opera.

In Japan they have something kind of similar... Kabuki Theater. It uses a lot of the tropes of opera... It's basically opera. They even had a Kabuki opera of The Last Jedi.

It's on YouTube.

I'm an expat. Beijing opera is actually quite famous, and many people in China like it, but personally it just hurts my ears. I can't stand it. I'd give other opera a shot. I actually like opera in certain contexts, like horror movies

It seems to vary a bit among different performances. These were widely considered the best seats that are available, so I guess they jack them up somewhat. There are tickets for 125 and up, but I was going for the super high end anniversary date thing. My wife grew up as a normal, working class midwestern girl, Dad a truck driver, so she is good with a Pizza and beer...but I wanted to really surprise her. Actually, she knew there was a Hawks game that night, so I think she thought it was that.....until I told her she had to get a fancy dress and I was getting my suit dry cleaned.

How many blow jobs did you get out of it?

Thats what we really want to know.

Congrats on 16 years.

Dinner, Opera, and a bottle of champagne...Better believe I got the full deal! Actually after getting up and driving from Kentucky to Chicago, showering and suiting up, having a multi-course Italian meal with wine and multiple cocktails, A 3 hour show, and then drinking afterwards.....I'm actually surprised I was able to perform.
