I don't think anyone is downplaying this now. BTW it's sometimes more informative to sort worldometer by total cases/1 million population in terms of how it's affecting any given country.

Hard to blame them. They've had this in the country for over 2 months and look at their numbers. It's certainly not killing people faster than influenza over there and no one ever contemplated shutting down society of that. I don't want to come across as a flu bro or anything, but it seems like the actual situation can differ dramatically across countries.

So far they are. Don't know about the future. Look at the deaths.

On March 14th Italy had about 22K cases but 1400 deaths. The US has 22K cases and 283 deaths. Italy had like 6 times the deaths at this point.

The US deaths will increase and it can increase exponentially but so far the US has handled it better than Italy. Will this hold we will have to see. Hopefully each state can get enough emergency equipment to keep hospitals supplied and maybe those hospital ships Trump sent out will help as well.

It anything Italy has probably completely bungled this. I can't really put blame on them because everyone was 20 feet behind the starting line because of CCP, but the situation in Italy has gotten way out of control and is way worse than anywhere else in the world. Spain is the only one coming close to it so I pray they can turn it around. I also worry for the UK as their deaths are tracking along Italy's numbers.

Why so many people under 40 not getting infected? They are asymptomatic so they don't get tested?

The fact that almost 40% of the cases are people over 70 and I have to ask how they are all getting it over younger people? You would figure young people would be at bars, clubs, restos, cinemas, parks etc...

The 40-70 group I can understand, this is your primary work force so it makes sense. To all old people in Italy congeragate in the same place so they infected each other?

There's an Italian doctor who specializes in infectious diseases and he's suggesting that there could be up to 4 million infected in Italy. He said that the government probably has no idea how many are infected in Italy.

In Finland we have about 500 confirmed infections and 30-39 year olds have it the most.

The first death by Corona happened here today. It was some really old person though.

Are you assuming that more than 1% of the world's population have it by now, though? The growth can simultaneously be exponential and still only affect a very small percentage of the world's population atm. It's not like it's gonna double, then quadruple in a matter of days. We are talking many weeks, even months, ahead.

All though I agree with your premise, testing can be great of screening and isolation. So I think that as much testing can be done should be done, but via triage. First tests should go to symptomatic people. second should go to tracing all the possible people that those postivie person may have come in contact with, and then final phase should be general public.

The issue is as you pointed out we don't have capacity and ability to do quick turn around testing like a thermometer style. Once the tech is there and you can get tested and get a result quickly than testing needs to be expanded. But until then you need your resources to identify the sick and track down anyone they had contact with to try and isolate and stamp it out as quick as possible.

reality is for a country like the US I don't see how its possible they could test 300 million people over and over again. Remember if you get tested today and then go party with a group of people who came back from italy, that test didn't protect you from possibly catching the virus. All it did is confirm at that point in time you didn't have it.

Now if what Boris is talking about a test that can show if you had the virus does come out thats game changer because then we can identify people who are immune. But that could be months away if we are lucky.
 
People are dying from Coronavirus , some countries shut down econony tho stop Corona but this will also kill people. The hard question for very county is when to do it. Also every.cointry is didferent at least in America.

Wild and wacky hot take, but being an island helps out a lot. Ya it makes sense because travel is easy to contain. Japan not doing to bad. SK sorta surviving. Taiwan doing great. Even Australia even though are Aussies are freaking out reletavily speaking 1K cases but 7 deaths not to shabby. Oh and I know SK technically isn't an island, but it might as well be since NK is between it and China/Russia.

Now of course you can easily stop travel so it makes a ton of sense. As for Japan, they want Olympics so they need to show that they can have crowds there. Now I am not saying they are being bastards for the Olympics so far they have done a decent job and maybe they can return to some sort of normalcy. Since they are an island they can make sure no new infected enter their country and just stamp out whatever they have left.

That jives with SK's numbers were the 20-30 group made up 27% of the cases. 0 deaths though.

So gotta ask why so many old people get it in Italy and so few young people? Is it because they are young and not getting tested (no symptoms). Or did this thing ravage some bingo and church nights that fucked Italy up big time. Like only 4% are in their 20's yet in SK that was the largest group.

Italy's problem for sure has to do with how this has gotten out in their old community. 70 above in SK is only 10% infected while in Italy its like 38% of the infected. Almost 4 times as many infected are in the highest risk group in Italy, which would explain why there system is so stressed.

(and yes young people get it and go into the hospital, but when you have such a large % of your cases being elderly thats like a double whammy)

We hit 100k on March 6th.
That doubled to 200k on March 18th.
We hit 300k today and are on track to hit 400k by March 24th which means the curve is accelerating at the moment.

The thought is that the majority of young people infected have minimal to no symptoms, hence they don't get tested.

Takes 2 weeks to fully recover so eventually that number should start going up. That's what makes this so much different then most other viruses, some people can have mild symptoms and be contagious for weeks and never feel the need to quarantine or seek medical help.

China and Korea seemed to have handled things well. Chinese production is opening back up and apparently even apple stores in China.
This quarantine is a short term thing, the initial phase will be stringent and business will suffer, but that's what unemployment insurance is for. The government is going to bail people out with money for food and basic needs. So where is this doomsday scenario of full economic collapse - we are far away from that, and depressions/recessions have happened before. You think government racking up a deficit is a problem? Where were you folks when the cheddar cheese burrito cut taxes for the rich and created a spaceforce, racking up more than 1 trillion in new debt?

Second, if you do nothing, you overwhelm the hospital system. You may get enough doctors sick that many hospitals won't even be able to function. This will be true choas. You can have all the health insurance you want, but if no hospital or doctor can service you, good luck getting critical care.

This is not a "oh it's just X people, what's the big deal", it's not clear if it will be 0.1% of the population, 1%, 10%, or whatever. It's not clear whether if we don't squash this thing now, it won't come back in full force during the fall. Also the ~65 crowd are some of the most world renowned researchers and professors. The death rate in the 50-60 category is also nothing to be laughed at. Lot of human capital there, certainly more than some 20-30 year old ignorant shmucks posting on a gaming board about how we should just let a whole bunch of people die because i need to save for muh iphone.

Get a grip.

It's been explained over and over again why isolating the oldies doesn't work. People at serious risk of death are 50+ and people with comorbidities. In Italy over half the population is over 50, if you add to that the young folks with comorbidities you're reaching 55-60 percent of the population. You think a country can run with 60% of its population locked?

The US is in a similar situation, 45+ represent 55% of the workforce. You really think America can run with 55% of its workforces locked down?

It's fucking retarded how young folk are throwing a fit at the thought of spending 2-3 months at home, risking country and family just because they're gonna miss 8-10 weekends of partying.

They're not old boomers you stupid fuck, they're the people making the country run.

I think it takes a while to leave your system, so it takes time to be classed as officially recovered.

People seem to be dismissing how debilitated people recovering actually are. Even young people who get it, are suffering significant lung damage. Seems even young people aren't able to breathe when their lungs fill with fluid either.

It's not just about the mortality figures.

It's honestly getting exhausting, and threads are eveeywhere in every forum and on every website, on all social media, and sometimes you just want a break.

I don't read the language, so I have no idea what's being posted in those tweets. But I note that 5g suscribers increased to 15 million in that time frame. Maybe those are just the number of people who switched over.
