The Dark Side of the Ring- Chris Benoit

TheStruggler

Report me for trolling ND/TLoU2 threads

This is only Part 1 of a two Part episode which delves into the rise and fall of Christ Beniot as a wrestler but more importantly as a person. Season 1 is also out highly suggest watching it due to the depth they go into revolving around the business and its athletes.

From watching part 1 its sad to say that Chris Beniot died along side Eddie that day in the bathroom.

Why would anyone agree to this for Vice
To get the story out there? Nobody really spoke out before except Nancy's sister I think. I mean it was rumored that Kevin beat Nancy so it's understandable he didn't want to be interviewed. Probably not a good liar.
Martha Hart is on the show too. Ask her why she agreed to it.

What are the main points of the video?

As a young kid, I remember watching that dude walk up to the ring, crick his neck, get in their and just beat the hell out of people. Remember asking my friend how to say his name lol

Chris Benoit...how could he let himself slip that far down? Had no right to

Wrestling fans have been trying to make excuses for Chris Benoit since his son he murdered's corpse was still warm.

On a related note, modern day wrestling fans are probably the most pathetic people on the planet.

I mean he literally got brain damage. I wouldn't excuse it but it's a reason.

A doctor said his brain resembled an 80 year old's with severe dementia. Which isn't to excuse Benoit, he still made the choice to do the worst thing he possibly could. But there were a bunch of factors at play. You do hear stories from wrestlers about their experiences with Benoit and he was definitely an odd, intense guy. There's other wrestlers who have had CTE and not done anything like that. With Benoit there was a mix of factors at play that tipped things over the edge.

Yep. Some people just act like Benoit came home one day and was all WHELP TIME TO KILL MY WIFE AND SON TODAY. Eddie's death broke him. Everybody mentioning he wasn't the same since then. He did all that shit over the course of a weekend. It was planned. Who knows what was going through his mind.
we all know it couldve been sullivan too

The CTE factor muddles things, but they don't excuse the things he did. It does give crucial insight into how fucked up these gladiatorial sporting events are when they can damage someone's brain to this extent, and measures needed to be taken much earlier to combat CTE. Just tragic.

This made me sad back then. He was such a tough nail of a man for me and seeing him break down like that... :messenger_confused:

Its still sad to see, and that episode of vice was well done....Chavo recalling how he found Eddie was rough also...

Which is complete bullshit since if he had the brain of an 80 year old with severe dementia he wouldn't be able to dress himself, let alone continue to perform his job without anybody realizing something was very wrong with him.

Say it with me now: Chris Benoit is an absolute piece of shit who made a choice to murder his wife and 8 year old son.

To top it off, he had the personality of cardboard and couldn't cut a promo to save his life. Never should have won the title.

I'm just saying what a doctor said. I get what you mean about him being able to operate in a seemingly normal way day to day. But I don't know enough about how brains work to discount what an expert said about it.

Yeh, he's a piece of shit who did something monstrous. People who try and make excuses because they like the way he did a german suplex are morons and lack the most basic level of empathy.

One of the best, zero knocks on his wrestling game.

The diving headbutt has aged well.

Props to vice. I watched this and the Montreal screwjob episodes and they were both top notch.

I was never a huge fan of Benoit as a wrestler, but Eddie Guerrero was one of my favorites of that era. Looking forward to part 2.

Has anyone watched the screwjob episode? It's a nice follow up to wrestling with shadows

The Montreal one veers a little too much into letting the talking heads tell whatever story they think is best rather than what actually happened. Stuff like Scott Hall claiming it was a work or Bruce Prichard saying it was Bret's last contracted night in the company, which it wasn't. Some of these guys won't let the truth get in the way of a good story lol

The Von Erichs one is really good, heavy going obviously but interesting.

That's what I like about the series. They let people speak for themselves. Same thing happened in the Bruiser Brody ep.

The Brody one is the most fascinating for this because you see Tony Atlas' reaction to Abdullah (probably) lying. At least Montreal is relatively meaningless in the big picture so if a couple workers want to bullshit then it's not really a big deal. The Brody one is bullshitting to cover up a murder.

Like Jim Cornette said, there is no way Scott Hall has never talked to Shawn about it. Definitely entertaining though

You know after watching these and hearing how Beniot screamed over the phone and then was on Eddies aide of the bed holding Eddies pillow and crying makes me think this is a Kenny Omega/Kota Ibushi scenario. They are friends but there is something else there that no one will ever admit to. Part of me thinks they were secret lovers slightly, even Chavo said "Beniot grieved as if he lost a spouse"

In the second part of the documentary it's mentioned that Regal lived in the same town as Benoit and was aware that Benoit's relationship with his wife was pretty fraught. So he was more reserved in his comments than others because he suspected Benoit may have been responsible for it.

Also if you want more detail about all the events I highly suggest listening to The Lapsed Fan. They talk about wrestling, evebta etc but did a really in depth deep dive, the total listening time of their podcast that covers Beniot is 3 parts and like a total of 7 hours long, really in depth as well.

I mean, they were like brothers. They spent everyday away from their families on the road pretty much together. Can't it just be that they were best friends? Why can't two guys be extremely good friends and one show extreme grief when the other dies without people thinking they're fucking?

I remember the Monday night Raw tribute after they found out he had died. :messenger_crying:
I was working that night taking the feed into London from the USA saw the in Empty ring with Vince in it then thought oh shit. Then the in memory of Chris Benoit all the tributes etc. The next night they found out what happened

Yeah, I wish he could've been in the documentary. Chris being abusive to Nancy was news to me.

I've only see the first part but I couldnt help wondering about this as well.

Because even Chavo said and agreed when Eddie died it was as if he lost a spouse. Maybe he knew there was something there. I totally get two grown ass men can be very very close friends, but in there case when they started their friendship in Japan etc as the years went along it somewhat seemed to be more.
