When a French movie isn't some lame comedy, it's 90% of the time some pretensious artsy-filled navel-gazing neo-bourgeois garbage, with within those last few years copious amount of obnoxious SocJus/PC messages added in. Some of those movies happen to be good because some actors/directors convey their navel-gazing better than other, but most don't. Yet there are always critics that will label those movies as "inspiring", "groundbreaking" or "important". Each time a movie gets those words printed on its poster, I avoid it like the plague.
In terms of Hollywood stuff, mmhhh, I would say "The Shape Of Water". Not hated it (it's alright), but found it very overrated. They channeled that "Amelie/Jean Pierre Jeunet" look, with unwanted bestiality on top of it. And one of the vilains was such a chauvinistic asshole, I rolled my eyes to it.
I find Asian cinema much more intersting nowadays anyway.
