Microsoft Games Showcase Event Today (11am ET / 8am PT / 4pm UK)

We're a few months away from next gen launch, there's no reason we can't get an alpha build from titles built for next gen from the ground up

We're not 1 or 2 years out
Well, I think this really wasn't the event for that. Third parties tend to always lag behind at the start of a gen, even new gen launch games are built mainly off current gen engines and know-how. They could have shown us stuff meant for later but I think this event was really for day one games. Look back at the start of this gen, besides Killzone Shadow Fall & Ryse, all of the third party games were pretty much souped up PS3/360 games.
Did some of you had amnesia or something? All what we got the start of this gen is remasters. And yes people buy the Pro and X to enjoy the same game with better performance. Now you'll play the same game with better performance but not shill $40 or $60.
... This is exactly what I'm saying. I'm pretty sure all of these games or nearly all of them will be cross-gen.

Which shows the mentality of fanboys, and how entrenched they are into the 'war'. They are literally shitting on PS5 games at the same time, and dont even know it.

Virtually nothing they showed screamed next gen and we've BEEN PROMISED a seismic shift this generation

It's not difficult to comprehend the backlash and easy to blame it on fanboyism

For Inside Xbox it was actually pretty good. They should have used the messaging of in-game footage rather than gameplay though.

Scarlet Nexus was my highlight. Going to watch the trailers now in 4K

Yikes. That was underwhelming. I was really hoping we would get something on Elden Ring.

The brightest spots were Call of the Sea and Scarlet Nexus but neither of those really got me excited for next gen. Scorn, The Ascent, and Assassins Creed were the worst showings IMO.

I think they all they expected to gain was showing some footage for gamers hungry for next gen. Most/all these are not only cross gen games, but multiplatform games, meaning fanboys jumping on these games are literally jumping on PS5 games as well.
Maybe they thought gamers were intelligent to know what cross gen games are, we certainly had plenty of them the first couple of years this gen.

I get that, but either way I think they needed some "wow factor" from the get go if they wanted to get a jump and try to make up some ground on Sony.

But who knows, maybe that's not their main goal given Spencer's comments about consoles sold not being the main metric any more. And that's probably smart as there's generally only been a shift in which platform sales the most when the prior generation leader screws up. i.e. N64 going with carts and high licensing fees, super expensive PS3 at launch due to forcing in Blu-ray and the bad PR of saying people would work two jobs to afford it, Xbox One reveal with the DRM plans and then scrapping those but still coming in $100 more with less power due to Kinect being forced in at launch. It doesn't seem like Sony or MS is going to do anything but play it safe this time, so maybe MS is just content to try to make big profits on their services on a variety of price and resigned to finishing behind Sony in console sales again.

If that's the case, piece meal reveals focused on games--regardless of next gen wow factor--is the way to go. Focus on content to try to get as many Gamepass subscriptions, Xcloud signups when that's out as possible, along side the Xbox still doing fine even if it's second to Sony. If they are wanting to try and be the leader in console sales again, definitely not the way to go as they would have to nail literally everything including a huge wow factor reveal to have a chance at that IMO.

Of course, another possibility is there just won't be a huge wow factor next generation. I've been gaming since the NES and have generally been wowed less each next gen transition with the exception of moving from 2D to 3D gaming. There's only so much that can be done with graphics to keep wowing people, even more so now when chasing 4K limits what you can do as that takes a lot of power to keep stable framerates, especially if going for 60fps.

Zoom and it's nothing impressive, just another game from this gen. RDR2 on PC is more impressive.
Those are screencaps from the youtube feed, so zooming in isn't exactly going to show the quality. The environments look nice, and this is pretty much what to expect from ACV on a PC running a 2080. Welcome to the modern console era where it's more iterative like PC. This is the stuff next-gen consoles will be playing when it comes to 3rd-party games.

Let's be fair, if you've been playing on a decent PC, pretty much nothing will surprise when it comes to next-gen graphics.

I can't remember anything from the PS4 and X1 reveals being this piss poor. I was actually really impressed by Ryse

(but I thought he was a Sony fanboy!)

Well many of us knew what 'next gen' was going to bring, especially from cross gen games. Some people always have to have ridiculous expectations, get dissapointed in what we get, then create a ton of unneeded negativity around gaming.

I haven't finished the catch up yet but some of the lighting and effects in these games is fucking superb. Yet all I see is meltdowns? The fuck?

I was dissapointed because if you compare to previous gen...Call of Duty Black Ops 2 started to look like shit on 360/PS3 compared to PC. So when Ghosts came out on next gen...and its like the worst looking COD this gen, you could tell it was a solid jump. I felt like somebody washed off vaseline off my face. Here, everything Ive seen looks like it could of come out 3 years ago. Ascent looked somewhat next gen and then I saw the isometric view and fuck that, just killed any hope.

This isn't a gripe with this shitshow but game trailers in general, why the over dramatic voiceovers?

well we won't really know that for sure because we didn't really see any actual gameplay. MS had a chance to blow everyone away and they chose to show in-engine cutscenes.
Microsoft don't have the rights to take decisions of contents of devs and publishers

You could blame Microsoft only for marketing and pr (twit,blog,etc..)

We've been force fed numerous tweets/quotes from numerous developers/engineers about how good this gen is going to be

It's not idle dreaming, it's actual facts

Would highly disagree. Last gen games on PC do not look anywhere as good as the games we got this gen on consoles. All we saw today was a cross gen title in line of Assassin's Creed Black Flag, which looks really bad these days compared to new entries.

This is not how you wanna showcase your new console fort the first time when it comes to games, Microsoft dropped the ball big time. This did more harm than good looking at the reaction and the amount of dislikes the stream got. Microsoft would have been better just waiting till July, but I guess they wanted to get ahead of Sony. I think it's time Aaron Greenberg got fired, the marketing for Xbox has terrible this whole gen and it continues to be the case as we head into next gen.

MS has always been transparent about cross-gen, smart delivery, building the Ecosystem.
This is kinda expected, while disappointing a'lil. There are the peaks(Series X hardware design) and troughs(smart delivery), things will get better over time. Because we know it will, with how dedicated MS has been communicating with gamers. :messenger_bicep:

Ryse was a first party, current gen only game, right?

These were third party cross-gens.

A more apt comparison would be Battlefield 4 on PS4/XBO vs 360/PS3, which was mostly a resolution boost and some better settings, which is what we are getting here.

anything worth watching?
Bright Memory Infinite looks Next Gen and had gameplay footage to back it up. The rest read what people say and look at the trailer afterwards if it interests you. There are cool games but the CG part to it means you don't know what the gameplay really is. No major incentive to go Next Gen.

Smart Delivery (Cross Buy) is the best thing. Keep the Xbox for a while and when you upgrade you have them playable (best version and not emulation) on your XSX.

I don't see it that way.
Imo Microsoft built up such a big hype that a lot of people were bound to be disappointed by such an inside XBox event.
While those games may not look as good on PS5, Sony didn't throw words like "most powerful console ever" and "biggest generation gap in years" around (well... not yet, who knows...).
While the new Fable and Halo may look awesome and stunning, Microsoft didn't offer what was promised with todays showing. Therefore the comparison between XsX and PS5 is just wrong - people are just disappointed. And if I'm honest: I totally understand them, after all those PR super words I'm pretty underwhelmed and can't wait for July.

This is probably the best thing to come out of the entire event. Finally clarifying that 60FPS is going to be the standard output. Not sure if that means there is a mandate, but I wouldn't even be mad if there was one cause 30FPS is dookie.

It was dreadful, if this is what we have to look forward to then man it's going to be underwhelming.

This is for both consoles too. I mean I know first party stuff is where we'll probably see the better stuff graphically but I can't imagine MS have anything system seller wise until a few years down the line if ever.

Unless of course you like halo gears and Forza.

I'm not sure that is a fair comparison given that that is a 1st vs 3rd/multiplat. If MS would've showcased 1st party games today your post (along with many others) might be quite different 🍻.

They should have clearly gone in with their 1st Party studio's then, if you want a reason to get a Series X you would show your best games first.

First impressions matter a lot.

Just got a glimpse of it. Graphics looked really nice.

I understand people frustration over the stream, but i think they did great, all these games showcased on the stream can't be used by Sony, it's like less ammunition for Sony stream, they also said that they will have more reveals in July, for me the stream was aimed to weaken Sony stream.

How has it weakened Sony? They've left the gate open completely

Just show next gen Cyberpunk and they've already won

how did they fuck it? it's not like that those games will look/run any better on PS5.. might be even worse or the same...
lets wait until july for their first party games and then compare it to sonys... if this looks worse THEN you can be so damn concerned...

but since these are all 3rd party, it's not an issue at all and your concern is ridiculous.

Okay bro, last warning, do you want some of this amazing coffee I'm brewing up? I know you're starting to get a whiff of it.

On a serious note, if you don't consider indie games and pre rendered trailers that somehow still look meh a disappointment then I think you might be the most easily pleased gamer I've met.

I've been criticising Sony and praising Xbox all throughout this nextgen hype train but the Xbox Train has just had to stop due to insufficient power from it's lacklustre event.

This was meant to be a big thing, no-one at Xbox as far as I can see gave any warning that most of this was AA fodder.

I was hoping for more than a more or less pre rendered preview of AC Valhalla, and I certainly wasn't hyped for Madden 21, let alone only SIX measly seconds of it.

Xbox did mess up here. Just like Sony did with their GDC miscommunication, now Sony have got to use this misstep to their advantage or we're probably going into nextgen with two botched console launches.

That was good to hear. Prioritize FPS over 4k. I want 60 fps on every game. Period.

That's a minimum expectation for PS5 or XSX.

And it only strengthened Sony's stream

Yikes...nothing wrong when a company like MS or the Xbox brand can make a little fun of itself lol. If someone wants or is interested in Xbox I highly doubt the fridge meme will deter them. It might actually encourage more interest lol.
You're right, the beginning with Aaron was fine, a joke is fine and I was okay with it. I worded it poorly, my apologies. It's the late cut back and the fridge is still there that pissed me off. Get rid for the finale and move on, it didn't need to be there to reinforce the joke. If you want to reshow the console then show a clip of it before the Vahalla sequence. Leave it finish was a bang and not a joke status.

I hope that clears it somewhat up.

I am not going to go through 30 pages LOL.

So TDLR did we see next gen graphics? Ray Tracing? 4K ?

Or was this basically current gen games running in a boost mode style?

I still need to parse through everything, but so far I'm not blown away. The games aren't necessarily bad but we are definitely deep into the morass of diminishing returns- all those floppy dicks at their disposal and the resulting games (which is all anyone should really care about) aren't substantially better than what we have now. Gameplay wise it's just iterative, absolutely nothing that wouldn't be possible right now even on OG ps4/boner hardware.

Ammunition? Nerf bullet levels of ammunition maybe at best

Bright Memory Infinite looked next-genish to me

Most of the everything else was top end current-gen with resolution/FPS boost but still some good looking stuff and expected from cross gen third party showcase
