Microsoft Games Showcase Event Today (11am ET / 8am PT / 4pm UK)

All the Bright Memory looks next gen talk is pretty funny. I could max the game at 60fps on my 980ti. The Early Access version has been on Steam for like a year, and released fully in March -

Well, I think this really wasn't the event for that. Third parties tend to always lag behind at the start of a gen, even new gen launch games are built mainly off current gen engines and know-how. They could have shown us stuff meant for later but I think this event was really for day one games. Look back at the start of this gen, besides Killzone Shadow Fall & Ryse, all of the third party games were pretty much souped up PS3/360 games.

... This is exactly what I'm saying. I'm pretty sure all of these games or nearly all of them will be cross-gen.

Umm, wasn't some of this stuff meant for later? I could swear I saw 2021 on some of the trailers.

I keep saying this but this gen isn't like previous gens. The Series X is designed to be a cross gen console that can play multiplatform games really well. This idea that a mind-blowing exclusive that fully utilizes the full power of the Series X is a fantasy - it's not going to happen. What you saw today is what you are getting with your fancy new videogame console.

I think the problems lies that Microsoft led off the intial reveal with indie titles instead of the big hitters

I can't for the life of me realise why they did

The indie game they started with was the most interesting of the bunch and had the most gameplay (or gameplay-esque) segments of all. Strong Vanquish vibes I got from that, looks crazy good for a one-person team of game.

However, I think MS messed up by stressing "gameplay", especially for the Valhalla stuff. The cutscenes are in-engine? Cool. We gonna see those cutscenes when playing the game? Cool. But that is NOT "gameplay" the way we usually think of it. Very few of the games had what I'd say actual gameplay. There was the opening game, the Silent Hill psychological horror-esque game, Ascent, and one other one I can't remember ATM (maybe it was named Medium?) which had some actual gameplay in them and that's what I wanted to see with SO many of the other games.

TBH I'm a bit worried if 3rd-parties will have games ready in time for launch. I have more confidence in the 1st-party output from MS and Sony in that regard, being ready for launch. While I definitely wanted more real gameplay, I'm glad MS did an event at all, and gotta keep in mind that 3rd-parties are the ones who wanted this event to happen. They want to start showing these games off, so I'm not expecting too much of a difference from the 3rd-party showings here and at Sony's event in June, except maybe for games like Quantum Error which seem to be fairly well along in actual gameplay to show off.

Overall I'd give this event a C, maybe a C+. The games themselves look really intriguing and stuff I'm going to want to check out when they're ready. But lack of gameplay outside of a literal handful of games is really disappointing. And it was REALLY disappointing how one of the MS guys kept pushing "gameplay" for the Valhalla footage. It's like, dude, c'mon, you KNOW you're stretching that word thin at this point, right?!? 😆 Just...just stop my guy.

I'm just glad we got some next-gen game footage today, and some of those games looking legit interesting to get and check out when said games are ready to launch. I just hope people understand that this is what the 3rd parties wanted to have out there and I wouldn't be surprised if we see some of these games at Sony's event next month with maybe different cut trailers (and outside of games like Quantum Error and Godfall, I'm not expecting any legit gameplay from whatever 3rd-party games get shown there). But I will say, MS better make damn sure the July event is "the big one". Full-on legit/real gameplay, running on the final retail hardware, and showing off the features of the hardware and the way the games are using them. And maybe even have Valhalla redeem itself with a real-time gameplay demo at that July event too.

Because depending on how the Sony event goes next month, things will either be about where they are right now for MS, or get MUCH tougher, and the July event will have to be ready to measure up and/or exceed whatever goes down by then.

Securing these games for a stream to keep the hype floating is better than leaving it for a competitor.

You don't think Sony has enough ammunition in their own pocket?
And looking at the general online reactions right now, the hype boat seems to be sinking. Although the negative voices are always the loudest at the beginning, so we have to keep checking on that after a few days.

Agreed, the first indie game looked pretty good and that's mind blowing for a 1 man team. But my God did they shit the bed after then

This is probably the best thing to come out of the entire event. Finally clarifying that 60FPS is going to be the standard output. Not sure if that means there is a mandate, but I wouldn't even be mad if there was one cause 30FPS is dookie.

Should have been stated in the show.

Bright Memory Infinite looked nect-genish to me

Most of the everything else was top end current-gen with resolution/FPS boost but still some good looking stuff and expected from cross gen third party showcase

So no pushing of Ray Tracing or DLSS (or whatever MS version of it is?)

That will probably be for the first party show case. Kinda what I was expecting last night, though I did think we would get a big 3rd party surprise and something really pushing Ray Tracing.

My games of the show,

I don't know about ya'll but though majority, nay all of the games were cross gen, you all should have known that by now. Still some of the games were plenty impressive current gen games with a little bit of next gen sprinkle on top. Next gen showing will be Microsoft studios and partner exclusives which should be in July? Other than that expect Sony to show next gen exclusives.

Someone said we we saw today is a different game than the one on Steam, or at least a remastered version
Its the same game. The one on Steam is basically a glorified demo of the 'full game', hense the price. I even played the level you see in the Xbox vid, with all the wind and effects going on.

why all the hate ? is it because you was on hype train and its crashed ? i was never on that train so i liked trailers as they are. thats all. and noone said it will be mindblowing. gameplay trailers can be like that

The most impressive looking title was Bright Memory Infinite, the lighting effects albeit seizure inducing, did look like a step up.

Some of the visuals in Call Of The Sea or whatever it was called looked pretty too.

I don't think the graphical aspects were the main con here. These are mostly cross gen titles and have to limit themselves due to the XB1/XB1S. I just wanted actual better games to look at.

I'm still excited to see Fable and other first party games in July and I'm still convinced that as long as Developers take their time with XSX ports of titles, that there will be a noticeable difference in favour of XSX compared to PS5.

I hope Sony deliver a bombastic reveal event though as I'm getting both consoles.

This gen but in 4k/60fps is pretty much what I expected next gen to be at the start.

Not sure what people expected. Halo won't be different because it's also a cross-gen title.

Would highly disagree. Last gen games on PC do not look anywhere as good as the games we got this gen on consoles. All we saw today was a cross gen title in line of Assassin's Creed Black Flag, which looks really bad these days compared to new entries.
You said yourself that RDR 2 on PC looks better than these XSX games, don't project that argument on me. If you buy a PS5 or XSX come this holiday season, these are the type of games you'll be playing along with stuff like Godfall. I expect last-gen games like DOOM Eternal and Cyberpunk with RTX features and mods to be on par or better than pretty much the majority of consoles games over the next few years.

I am not going to go through 30 pages LOL.

So TDLR did we see next gen graphics? Ray Tracing? 4K ?

Or was this basically current gen games running in a boost mode style?

Current gen with boosted graphics. That is about what you should expect from 3rd party games. Many folks are acting silly because they didn't get to see some graphical powerhouse of a next gen game, but that was never gonna happen. It was a third party games showcase. I give the event a C or maybe a C+. It was fine. Not great. But it didn't harm the Xbox brand like some folks are trying to imply.

Yes and it was a stupid move to decide to show off 3rd party games first. It was a self inflicted move from Microsoft. Even if this was a 3rd party showing they could have showed better 3rd party games like Elden Ring, Batman, Harry Potter, Starfeild etc. But they decide to show AA games from Steam. And the only exciting cross gen game they promised with gameplay Assassin's Creed didn't have gameplay.

again its all about build up, they still have them to come.

I felt there was a weird cut on gameplay from first person to the driving section. Is it like that in the version you played or was it poor editing?

Like I said before, it is just like Battlefield 4 launching on PS4/XBO as well as being available on 360/PS3. It was a resolutuon and settings boost. Cross gen launch titles will be as such. Comparing first party launch game reveals to todays event is shifting the goal posts

Console wars my man. It will be a bit before actual conversation can happen for people who actually love games no matter where they come from and if they aren't the best cutting edge AAA mega funded 10 year dev projects.

Not sure what people expected. Halo won't be different because it's also cross-gen title.

Many expected what MS fed them with a PR spoon. The biggest console generation gap in a long time, the most powerful console ever, mind-blowing graphics... if those promises are followed by such an Inside showing disappointment is guaranteed.
Don't get me wrong: I saw many nice games today. But I totally understand people who are disappointed because MS just failed in communicating the right expectations for today.

Two notes:

1.) The issue for me wasn't just the underwhelming graphics; It's also how underwhelming the gameplay concept of these games looked. Everything felt so uninspired, so 'been there, done that'. Can't excuse that with Corona either.

2.) I suddenly feel A LOT more confident about buying a 2070 Super for my in-progress PC build. Still waiting for Nvidia's gpu event, but as of now, a 2070 Super ought to suffice for nextgen sadlol.

Okay bro, last warning, do you want some of this amazing coffee I'm brewing up? I know you're starting to get a whiff of it.

On a serious note, if you don't consider indie games and pre rendered trailers that somehow still look meh a disappointment then I think you might be the most easily pleased gamer I've met.

I've been criticising Sony and praising Xbox all throughout this nextgen hype train but the Xbox Train has just had to stop due to insufficient power from it's lacklustre event.

This was meant to be a big thing, no-one at Xbox as far as I can see gave any warning that most of this was AA fodder.

I was hoping for more than a more or less pre rendered preview of AC Valhalla, and I certainly wasn't hyped for Madden 21, let alone only SIX measly seconds of it.

Xbox did mess up here. Just like Sony did with their GDC miscommunication, now Sony have got to use this misstep to their advantage or we're probably going into nextgen with two botched console launches.

Welp that's a...pessimistic outlook. Content-wise both this and Road to PS5 were good events. The problem with both was their messaging. Sony advertised a technical dissertation to gamers who the majority don't even know a quarter of what was discussed (even now). This MS event was mostly World Premier CG trailers with very scant amounts of gameplay, even tho one of the presenters kept saying "gameplay" over and over when it clearly wasn't gameplay (Valhalla).

So now that both Sony and MS got one sort-of botched (not necessarily in terms of content, but in marketing setting expectations that weren't realized) events out of the way, they'll have banger showcases going forward, starting with Sony's in June and continuing with Microsoft's in July.

it was used as a tech demo for Nvidia. Alot of the assets are from Shadow Warrior 2 like the bamboo background , buildings. It's just running in UNREAL 4 with more effects on.

I wouldn't say it keeps the hype floating but it is a conversation. Even if it fell flat for the most part (there were positives imo). At least there's a conversation being had.
Exactly.

These cross gen games are coming on XSX & PS5, why hating :messenger_tears_of_joy: ?
Sony has enough ammunition in their pocket, they (MS) just took these (games) shown today away to add up on their (sony) stream, that's what i said.

I felt there was a weird cut on gameplay from first person to the driving section. Is it like that in the version you played or was it poor editing?
Its been a while but i dont think the vehicle sections are in the Steam version. I could be wrong though. The game was very clunky and felt weird on a controller. The controller support was shoddy at best, and the dev said he wont update. It got good user reviews though so i guess it plays good with M/KB.

This is the first time we are seeing next gen gameplay. We don't want to see that we can run current gen game slightly better. We want to be blown away.
PC is normally where you see incremental updates in quality. But normally on console generation change, a jump in quality is expected.

To me, this seemed like a less severe version of the mistake Sony made with The Road to Ps5 presentation.

The emphasis on teraflops carried the implicit promise next-gen would blur if not erase the line between cutscene and gameplay for good. So any trailers only showing the former were always going to leave a sour aftertaste in one's mouth. An entire presentation of it seems just the right recipe for getting the kind of reaction Mark Cerny got.

Showing games in rush with an event you talk about with eager ! It's a bad idea MS , no hate for all games developers but that wasn't a show but it was a pre alpha trailers with a lack of gameplay that this show was advertising about .. it's a hit back
Cool stuff and music with some ray tracing won't do good to you tbh

Let's hope next event from Sony is better than this one

No-one knows lmao, likely Late May, Early June.
They just need to show gameplay of TLOU2 and Ghosts at 4k60 and thanks....

Hopefully they will show some gameplay at least.

Even my Pro games look better than what I saw today, AA filler, awful except AC.

this is the thread I was lookin for

yeah June 4th will be great, hope to see TLOU2 and Ghosts as well.

I gotta start another countdown for more games

That's what I'm hoping for, banger events going forward, and I said if we don't get those banger events going forward THEN we'll likely get botched launches, I'm not full pessimist just yet 😉
