Even if you only look at realistic styled games in rough war filled setting the vast majority of female characters in the last 5 year look like feminine women that are sometimes a little tough..

Even when they are ripped they are usually still pretty.

And obviously if you play anything from asia they still make most of their characters look like super models.

I'm not sure why this even started to happen? Evolution of gaming shouldn't meant evolving females into men.

I think it comes down to the idea that masculinity = strong, femininity = weak, the misconception that in order for a female to be "strong" she has to cast aside her femininity and take on typically masculine traits. In game design this ends up resulting in masculine, or at best, androgenous female characters.

Strength isn't everything though. There is cunning and many other attributes that can make someone stronger. How many boss fights out there make your character on par with the boss, on physical and health wise? Probably none. It's not always about strength to win a fight. Sometimes it's agility, smarts, conservation, etc.

Bayonetta didn't need to be muscular to whoop ass. Nor did many other female characters. But it's like now a days, female characters need to be more jacked than males in real life. That shit is cringey af. These females could make most guys the BOTTOM in the relationship. Not cool.

I think that people are catching on to the fact that this stuff isn't as popular, and I expect going into the next generation less and less people will make stride to attempt to appeal to an audience that isn't really interested in their products to begin with.

Thankfully this is by no means a global phenomena, and in the meantime you can just play more japanese games that fit your taste in character design.

To me 2B and A2's design are more than just "hot", their design were very slick in my opinion. I don't think their design would this popular if they were just "hot". Akihiko Yoshida did great job with these designs.

Not everyone wants to make games where you can use magic and superpowers as reasons why the girls can get past the physically demanding barriers they are dealing with without getting strong. What female characters are you talking about? The majority are still quite feminine and don't look more muscular than someone trying to build some strength at the gym. I don't get why we are suddenly pretending the industry is over-run with big hulking she hulks.

There are a few examples of super-buff female characters but there are 100 more normal-looking ladies.


Also, physical strength got nothing to do with who's on top. If you're "making" someone bottom you're doing it wrong.

Character design is part of the appeal of a character, that's why in 18367 years everybody will remember Chris and Jill from RE1 and nobody will remember Ethan and Mia from RE7.
The same goes for movies.

Character design is Important, of course. That doesn't mean make a generic pretty face. It applies to male models too, totally agreed. I'm for characters looking anyway, attractive or not. Just feels like people only get upset when it's a female model that isn't super attractive or attractive at all.

I'm confident enough in my masculinity that I'm not bothered by women being portrayed in a variety of ways.

- Masculine women don't bother me.
- Lesbian women don't bother me.
- Women that are "not pretty" enough don't bother me.
- Strong women don't bother me.
- Women that wear clothes appropriate to their task don't bother me.
- Women with average proportions don't bother me.
- Women that don't fit within exploitative outmoded archetypes don't bother me.

And if they did, it still wouldn't matter because a majority of female characters in videogames are still designed to be attractive women not resembling men. Some of y'all can't see the forest for the trees.
