The PS5 Reveal Has Put All the Pressure Back on Microsoft - Ryan McCaffrey

Sony went all-in with this week's PlayStation 5 Reveal event, choosing to push all of its chips into the center of the table on one hand rather than make more frequent smaller bets, as Microsoft has (mostly successfully) done so far. But, perhaps knowing it had a great hand – it certainly helps that you're the market leader by a sales factor of two over your competitors, meaning you have a much higher margin for error – it waited. And when the time finally came, Sony played its hand beautifully – it was also the most-watched gaming stream in YouTube's history – erasing much of Microsoft's hard-earned Xbox Series X momentum in one fell swoop. So the question for Team Xbox becomes, "Now what?"

But none of those services ultimately matter without great games. And not "great" on the IGN scale (8 out of 10), but the 10-out-of-10 masterpiece-level games that Sony has delivered time and again this generation, and Microsoft hasn't done since the Xbox 360 days.

Through a series of acquisitions and startups, Microsoft now counts 15 studios in its first-party stable. That outnumbers Sony's roster, but delivering on the quality is the trickier part. Halo remains the biggest property Microsoft has, but its reputation has suffered since Microsoft parted ways with Bungie on the back of a disastrous launch of Halo: The Master Chief Collection and an extremely disappointing campaign in Halo 5.

Great hardware and services play a part, certainly, but it has been and will always be about the games. Show me what you got, Microsoft.

Are diehard Xbox guys losing patience with Xbox? Is McCaffrey a traitor? Will Xbox's event in July change everything and make articles like this age poorly? Let's see.

Xbox has been poking a very quiet bear for a while now. Yesterday, that bear woke up and struck back HARD and with a vengeance. How will Xbox respond? Do they have the ammo to make a counterattack? It should be interesting.

All of Microsoft's good games to show off were made years ago they just run em a little faster. Their next console will run em a little faster. The next one will run ....

They took the box their AMD parts showed up in, painted it black, and poked holes in the top

They did their game presentation out of their own kitchens and guest rooms

They took last console's controller and popped out the old dpad and replaced it with a plastic octozoid pattern (called it an upgrade)

I really don't think Microsoft is feeling any pressure. They aren't taking this console thing very seriously at all.

1. I don't think Sony have put all their chips on the table at all
2. I don't think Xbox currently has enough to see them.
3. It doesn't really matter, they don't need to.

This is exactly what I am
Talking about in the GQ thread.

The exposure Sony generated has wiped out any momentum MS had until now. Of course MS their first showing was during early days of lockdown so I forgive them for the quality of the show. But also it was as Inside Xbox episode and Xbox Fans know are familiar with the format.

However, now there are more established best practices around Covid. I expect ALOT from their next showing.

If any of MS is still on this forum, PLEASE do not rely on third party execs coming on and chat shit about your little fucking promo deal. XBOX GAMES STUDIOS better fucking carry your console on its shoulders.

Meh. Let's wait & see.

That was a good presentation from PlayStation. I liked what I saw. The console looks great & games like Horizon Forbidden West are day one purchases. But let's see what Xbox have to show. I don't think the PS5 reveal was unbeatable.

Honestly, I'm a bit suspicious of some of these articles dropping. Almost like they're setting up an 'underdog' and 'back in the game' reporting cycle. There's no way anyone can say that was a 'good event' last night. It was ok, but the biggest hitter there was Horizon and probably GT7. I genuinely think Microsoft might surprise some people with their event. I think another six months drastically changes the launch titles for PS5 and then its a different conversation.

Lol the Xbox is the more powerful console. Microsoft has no pressure, Which is why they revealed the console so early. Just price it competitively and they can win back North America.

Microsoft got clowned. And Sony is still holding back, there was a lot more they could have showed but it's just not necessary right now. Microsoft will never get it together. They don't care anymore about going toe to toe with Sony they just wanna have their own slice. Generation after generation they get outclassed. Sony needs Playstation MS does not need xbox and it shows.

Lol, whatever. There was a TON there. Spider-Man, Ratchet and Clank, Little Big Planet and Demon's Souls are also huge. Not to mention SquareEnix's Project Athia.

Losing patience? Nah. Traitor? Nope. You can love a platform and still call it out on its flaws. Loving/Liking a platform, or whatever, doesn't not mean you support it 100% no questions asked. That is called blind loyalty/support. If you love/like something/someone wouldn't you want it to be the best that it can be? You can't do that if you never speak up.

Edit: Yes, Xbox is feeling the pressure. How could they not? You may not have liked that presentation, you may think it was "boring" "meh" "nothing for me," but a vast majority of people who watched it really liked it. The mindshare, attention and hype that event garnered should be alarming to Xbox and I think it is. I think Xbox will try their best to come out swinging.

I'm willing to bet that Sony will counter MS' july showing with some ace they've kept up their sleeve.
Possibly a Horizon gameplay demo.

When you think about it, this is probably true.

PlayStation generally do outplay Xbox when it comes to marketing. They seem to know how to counter any move Xbox makes.

I still think Xbox can have a very impressive showcase in July though. One that can catch some people's attention & make them sit up.

Timed exclusive coming to Xbox, and other than Spider-Man there's no release dates. That's my only knock on the show.

I am losing patience, and if Halo Infinite reveal and the July show doesn't blow me out of the water I'm just gonna get a ps5 and play Xbox games on a pc at okay graphics

Microsoft would be fine with that, to be fair. Either way you're buying their games. They aren't gonna make much of a profit, if any at all, on that potential Series X sale anyway.

Man you gotta stop taking this shit so seriously.

No, it's not.

Read the bottom. Thanks.

I really don't think Sony "put all the pressure back on microsoft" with that conference. If anything Sony responded 'sorta well' imo to the pressure they were facing.

I mean Microsoft was letting youtubers take the Xbox Series X apart and play with it at the top of the year, and all we had from Sony was Godfall announced last year...then a UE5 tech demo, and a controller lol.

If anything I think Sony did an okay job of telling folks "Back the hell up bro we working, dont worry we still at it"

No, they wouldn't. Xbox is a closed ecosystem. They get nothing for non-first-party games that sell on Steam and only 70% of first-party games.

You just said "play Xbox games on a pc at okay graphics." This would imply you're buying Microsoft's games. Whether you buy Microsoft games on the Xbox or on the PC you're still giving them money.

The article was nice and logical.

That nonsense you added at the end was adorable fan fiction. Thanks for the laugh. Poking a bear 😆😆 Struck back hard 😆😆

That event yesterday was just decent. Just decent, nothing more. A far cry from the spectacle PS fans screamed for weeks about.

So the media is rewriting history as to what happened? Judging from comments, chat and general follow up to the PS5 reveal stream, it seems like a pretty mixed response.

Not everybody on PC uses Steam. But either way, yes you are still buying & playing an Xbox game.

& is Xbox really a closed ecosystem anymore? Play their games on console, PC or just stream on your phone with Xcloud. That seems at least kind of open to me.

I swear i watched a different show to everyone else. It was a poor showing imo, with 90% PS4 looking games. Microsoft would of been crucified for the exact same showing and to see the resident Sony mafia saying things like '10/10 show for me', well disingenuous doesnt begin to explain it. I was reading the Sony thread, i mean the next gen thread, i know the expectations from people, and no way did yesterdays show match those expectations, graphics wise i mean.

Possibly a Horizon gameplay demo.

I fully expect them to. For me, Horizon went from discovery of a new IP that needed a lot more polish to an event saver during that event. I like Horizon but it was very much a first attempt and there were lots of QoL basics missing in that game and loads of room for improvement. Let's not make out it was this ultra groundbreaking game that had no issues. It's not quite the leap between UC1 and 2 we need, but it is a leap - unless you only care about the prettiness of the game.

GT7 had really bad issues on the trailer with pop-in etc. It looked like GT:S but they've replaced baked lighting with RT.

Demon's Souls might be a big draw. A lot of people didn't play the original and Souls has grown in stature. To those who don't follow closely it might look like another Souls game only on PS5 though - and I suspect that's the main driver.

LBP - because 3 was received so well? Or LBP Hub became a thing? Remember this?

There was nothing in that trailer that stood out, but sure it's another LBP game, and they're cute enough I guess. I dunno, at the moment the ball is in Microsoft's court and ti's theirs to screw up - which they may do. But right now, both have had pretty middling events, and Microsoft have a further shceduled event to correct/change perception.

The real losers are both companies. I've not seen a single reason to upgrade my PS4 Pro yet, rather than wait it out.

Or Silent Hill.

Silent Hill, Horizon gameplay, 2nd Naughty Dog teams game, Crash Bandicoot from Activision, Legacy Of Kain remake, GoW 2, next chapter of FFVI Remake, ect ect. Loads of things Sony can still show that should be relatively far in development.

It'll be interesting to see how far some of the new Microsoft Studio's have come in their games, I bet Double Fine will have some cool stuff to show. It all comes down to wheter they were allowed to continue with the project they were working on when MS purchased them, or if they were tasked with new larger scale projects that wouldn't be ready to show yet. MS should really just show a bunch of games even if they are early, and give them vague 2021 release windows (which they'll of course delay into 2022), they need to "sell" the idea that they now have a lot of first party (that isn't Halo and Gears), because simply hearing about how they have a lot of studios now isn't doing the job.

If only north America was the world. Most powerful console means shit its the whole package ppl want and even with tht unless a colossal fuck up by Sony thy just can't win. Sony is synonymous with consistency and quality hence why ppl buy it. Games and goty contenders every year. Even during ps3 era with a network black out, worse multiplats, hundreds more Sony still upon release was outselling Xbox 360 worldwide.

Ignorance is bliss lol all the pressure is on them and has been on them bcus we all know Sony is killing it on all cylinders and their gaming division is making way more profit then Microsoft gaming division. Thy just hit hard with many exclusives and other gd looking games.

I don't think PS5 event was 10/10 show.

I don't see fully designed PS5 games much better than Flight simulator/Halo infinite & Hellblade 2. (Ok, Horizon in terms of environment but it's not in game, character model is not more impressive than Halo infinite imo and not match Hellblade 2)

Microsoft hasn't really shown much first party and launch stuff, which will be the deciding factor.
Sony did a good job, not amazing, probably a bit worse than people expected.
Microsoft is still in good shape and at the moment it's not going to be difficult to beat PS5 launch titles which will basically be Spiderman and Godfall, the latter looking like hot trash.
Halo Infinite is bigger than anything Sony has lined up during launch window. If M$ throws a Fable game on top of it or something AAA equivalent, and Sony doesn't bring out anything else, then what does M$ has to worried about.
Sony will still be a powerhouse in exclusives, but it'll likely take them 3 years to really pull ahead in terms of new unique games. Meanwhile you can enjoy multiplatforms on the world's most powerful console :P

If that was striking "back HARD and with a vengeance", I don't think Microsoft is going to lose much sleep. Why? Because nothing from a technical level shown yesterday can't be done with the Series X.

The general public doesn't care about anything on a technical level. They just care about the games. Horizon 2, Spider-Man, Ratchet & Clank, and Demon's Souls will not be on the xbox and that's all that matters. You may not particularly care about any of them, but there is a large amount of people that do. I'm not even sure what is coming out exclusively to the xbox that I can't play on another system.

It's fascinating how many folks seem to so much of the PS5 event lineup is actually PS5 exclusive. Generally if Sony ain't publishing it, it won't be exclusive. Games are too expensive these days for publishers to limit their reach.
It's quite funny actually, but you gotta give Sony credit for the amount of misinformation and marketing department. If you're not on the forums or really glued into this stuff, you wouldn't realize pretty much every third party title they showed yesterday is at best a timed exclusive. Users such as Vawn Vawn fell right into their trap.

At this point the Xbox consoles are basically a standardized PC without the extra positives and negatives that come with typical PC ownership.

Which is not a problem, really, it's just the logical conclusion of the console market. The only reason Sony hasn't started the dual release strategy like Microsoft is because Microsoft makes Windows, and if you're Gaming on a PC, there's like a 98% chance you're doing so within Windows.

What you saw from Hellblade? A cute cutscene? No gameplay and given Hellblade 1 which was linear and restrictive asf tht shit won't compare to Horizon. Halo infinite? 😂 Halo been on a decline hardly anyone is hyped for that. Microsoft exclusives just can't match Sony's. Pay attention a 96 goty contender just dropped today and usually drops every year. Flight simulator??? Smh I hear u on tht.

Lol the July event for Microsoft is going to be the best event they ever produced. I firmly believe it because they have to. Too many times they told Xbox fans they held back. They been rumoring many things themselves. So the July event have to be the most pivotal showcase they ever created or they will see the death of Xbox this generation.

Sony's best at smoke & mirrors, to be fair. Fond memories of less informed individuals being hoodwinked by the initial Killzone 2 trailer is still fresh in my mind.

Persona 5, Dragon Quest XI say hi.
