The PS5 Reveal Has Put All the Pressure Back on Microsoft - Ryan McCaffrey

Ryan is taking the correct position. Microsoft needs to show compelling AAA nextgen games. No indie nonsense, no weird cartoony We Happy Few clones, and no AA Gamepass shovel wear. Everything shown from their first party need to be on par with the Hellblade 2 trailer. There needs to be no doubt that what the viewer is seeing is nextgen. Microsoft knows what the expectations are given the praise of the Unreal 5 demo. That's the quality that needs to shown.

Microsoft hasnt had their showcase yet. multiple titles Sony had will also be on Xbox. And while Microsoft has the more powerful console, its also smaller and will probably be cheaper. Did i miss something here? Sony hasnt won anything yet.

It's fascinating how many folks seem to so much of the PS5 event lineup is actually PS5 exclusive. Generally if Sony ain't publishing it, it won't be exclusive. Games are too expensive these days for publishers to limit their reach.

yep.

Now it is more like..."hey, if you don't want to feel like a second class passanger buy a PlayStation and play it first"

Microsoft definitely has pressure. Their first showing even if it was sold as 3rd party, was not great. Their next showing has to be stellar. Even if they show titles in an early stage (2021) it will enforce their commitment to new titles outside of the Forza, gears properties.

And anyone saying Little Big Planet being worth mentioning is crazy. Sumo lost ALL goodwill after the LBP 3 and Crackdown 3 disasters

Persona 5, Dragon Quest XI say hi.

Dragon Quest XI was released on the 3DS, Switch, and Windows in addition to the PS4 version.

Persona 5 is more a matter of Microsoft having little-to-no presence in the Japanese market more than anything.

Lol the July event for Microsoft is going to be the best event they ever produced. I firmly believe it because they have to. Too many times they told Xbox fans they held back. They been rumoring many things themselves. So the July event have to be the most pivotal showcase they ever created or they will see the death of Xbox this generation.

Thts not saying much, all their presentations from last few gens been forgettable. If thy come with tht "two exclusive and rest multiplatform filler shit" thy really done. Sony has nothing to prove thy come wuth goty winners and contenders every year or so ppl are going to buy Sony console regardless. Microsoft presentation has to be good not to overcome Sony bcus thy just won't or can't do tht, but it has to be good to generate profit and have ppl buy in.

Btw hardly anyone says anymore "omg can't wait for Halo" tht shit been generic for years so thy better not rely on tht.

Exactly. That proves nothing stopped them from putting it on Xbox, but they didn't even consider it worth the effort.

Sony's best at smoke & mirrors, to be fair. Fond memories of less informed individuals being hoodwinked by the initial Killzone 2 trailer is still fresh in my mind.

Yeah tht game tht took the graphical benchmark in fps shooters tht gen and scored in the 90s meta 🤭😊

You know who are the masters at smoke and mirrors 👀💯

If MS wants to recreate at least the Xbox 360 scenario, they have to really impress. You don't become a market leader by being marginally better than the star of that market. Pricing, games, the whole deal has to really put one up on Sony or they're not changing their prospects. I wasn't too impressed with Sony either mind you, but they're not making big mistakes either so it's not going to be easy for MS.

I feel like even for Persona 5 it's only a matter of time until PC and maybe even a Switch version pops up somewhere down the line.

Sony's hand they showed yesterday was like a 9 high flush at best, I doubt Microsoft are panicking over that.

There were no real bombs dropped with the games. The console is huge and hideous, while being weaker than the Series X. All MS need to do is get the price right and they will improve their position.

Losing patience? Xbox has been as forward for a console reveal as possible. They showed Hellblade and Halo and told us "where working on these games with our new first parties." It's a bit reactionary to be "impatient" with them after Sony kept all the cards on the table till yesterday. I think that MS actually is in a good position from yesterday. Sony had a decent - great showing but it wasn't a mic drop kind of show. Xbox can flounder it if the games they show don't look great. But a fable teaser, a hint at the initiative's game and something from Obsidian is all they really need to bolster some hype. I think because they were so open about the reveal no one is saying "MS is done gg" like in 2013 because then Xbox gave an assist to Sony to have that big mic drop moment. I don't think unless their first party games are all cartoony or 8bit , they can't "lose" in any extraordinary way.

If only north America was the world. Most powerful console means shit its the whole package ppl want and even with tht unless a colossal fuck up by Sony thy just can't win. Sony is synonymous with consistency and quality hence why ppl buy it. Games and goty contenders every year. Even during ps3 era with a network black out, worse multiplats, hundreds more Sony still upon release was outselling Xbox 360 worldwide.

Ignorance is bliss lol all the pressure is on them and has been on them bcus we all know Sony is killing it on all cylinders and their gaming division is making way more profit then Microsoft gaming division. Thy just hit hard with many exclusives and other gd looking games.
I don't think Microsoft cares about the world. They are never winning in Asia or Most of Europe. So might as well focus on countries that actually buy their consoles (Canada, America, UK, Mexico, Brazil, etc).

Microsoft has really never put much pressure. They done no real marketing have made no exciting deals (that we know of). The only people praising Xbox are companies they have marketing deals with or obscure devs whereas Devs, AMD and other tech experts are praising PlayStation. Sony already appears to have already done a bunch of innovative things or at least considered them. Sony has already started making/revealing deals. And even though Microsoft started revealing things earlier, the PlayStation is going harder when they reveal things so far. The Insomniac acquisition is also arguably more significant than all Microsoft's recent acquisitions put together.

Besides being very backwards compatible and havIng a big more raw theoretical performance, they aren't doing anything that's going to put any real pressure on Sony.

There's still time to see if either side has more to reveal but so far Xbox hasn't done much to convince most people to jump ship to say that they were ever putting pressure. If Microsoft wants to do well they better have a lot more up their sleeves than just those studios they acquired, BC, and having a slightly more powerful console.

I think their best event was the year they announced all the studio acquisitions. Because for xbox fans who had a rough generation it was that moment where it felt like they were finally fighting back. This is what it lead to tho. They can't mess it up.

They are a company it's disgenous and no disrespect to you ignorant to say thy don't care about the world. No matter how small a dent you make, companies are always trying to expand, without expansion your profit margins don't grow hence Sony not only beating them in revenue this gen but also profit. Don't let tht Microsoft bs pr fool you.

Well July's event is going to be one of the rare cases where Microsoft get to go second. If they cant take advantage of yesterdays poor showing, then well next gen is a no go for me, its over before it started.

To be honest Microsoft can grab a lot of momentum. The Sony show was abysmal in comparison to past generation reveals. What was shown had some good things but if Microsoft hits it out of the park they will have the momentum. But even with a bad show Sony still showed a lot of promise. Ratchet, Horizon, Spider-Man. Microsoft can match those if they nail Halo Infininite, Fable, and a few others. Gamepass can be a big advantage. Throw in some huge hitters in there and they will get a ton of morale with all the gamers.

1. I don't think Sony have put all their chips on the table at all
2. I don't think Xbox currently has enough to see them.
3. It doesn't really matter, they don't need to.
Yup, that's what I am assuming too. I think PlayStation still has their next level stuff cooking away till it's just right to show...

The drama of it all at least makes it a spectacle.

It's only because of that E3 people are even excited about MS. Now they have to show what have been produced. Hell blade 2 was the first fruit. Based on rumors Xbox fans are going to have a lot to look forward to come July.

What pressure really? To win next-gen? That's just nuts and ain't gonna happen. As long as the gaming division keeps generating billions for Microsoft (and they don't crater the brand like Don Mattrick tried to do), they will be fine.

The ball is in MS camp indeed, but that's what happens when you don"t have the reveals happening on the same event (RIP E3), so there's nothing unusual there. I don't think it puts MS in a hard position actually, many expected Sony to show an avalanche of AAA first party titles that would dwarf any competition, and in the end most people will remember Ratchet and Horizon. If MS can have its own couple of AAA games to show in July (and why wouldn't they ?), they can easily even up the situation, or even take the lead in momentum.

Yea, July can be the end of the "Xbox has no exclusive" narratives for good. It was smart of them to go big on WRPG so they arent directly compared to Sony's first party games.

Originally, I was going to get Series X first, but now might not even get it at all. The team behind it seem to not care too much about it, so why should I? Seems like every game coming to it will also work on last gen consoles so that is off putting.

I mean Sony haven't showed their exclusive deals with two of the biggest franchises in history - CoD and FIFA yet. Hate them or love them, these games sell millions of consoles and Xbox never has the rights for them.

Looking back at every Xbox announcement after 360 is a disappointment. Think I'm finally washing my hands fully with them. I know PS has more games to announce yet due to sources and can easily counter Xbox next game showcase.

People can say TF this, TF that, but to me it's all about the games, and no game I played on Xbox One looked anywhere near as amazing as Horizon ZD.

Being objective, it needs to be remembered that the bigger third-parties have remained really quiet to this point.

EA, Activision, WB, Ubi etc. May support all platforms but inevitably they cut co-promotional deals, especially at the start of new gens.

I think trying to make judgements based on first party might be missing the point this time, because its going to be a couple of years before their output really comes into play. MS new acquisitions haven't had enough time to do much yet, and a lot of Sony's better teams have put out PS4 product relatively recently.

MS has a winning strategy in mind

YOU GET HALO!
YOU GET GEARS OF WAR!
YOU GET FORZA!

Can I ask what, in your opinion, would be a strong showing for a console reveal?

Why are people so intent on "warring" about these. The only console I buy for first party games is Nintendo.

The others I buy based on the third party games I want, and most of those I can play on both consoles.

Never thought I'd see him say anything good about anybody but Microsoft.

Somehow I still liked him more then Destin whatever the fuck your last name is

Counting on Halo is misguided I feel, Destiny is everything Halo was and more to people now.... people don't really need Halo.

ps5's showing wasn't strong at all

One badass Halo trailer will be more than enough.

Halo been generic for years now no one gets hyped for that anymore except few diehards Horizon is the game to beat and nothing in Microsoft's portfolio comes close not Halo, surely not Hellblade 2.

Won't even talk about awesome ratchet, spidey, GT, etc games tht usually all score high and sell tons. Horizon on its own as a new ip scored 89 sold ten mil plus :)

Sony had an ok showing(not mind blowing) and will dominate the next gen talk until MS does their July showing.

They better nail it though or Sony will dominate them once again

Ryan McCaffrey sucks.

(unrelated to this of course, he's right about Xbox needing to step it up)
I think he is alright, he has passion for Xbox and he is fairly honest about things. I'm not a big fan of his voice... it's a bit too 'Big bang theory' for me. But he can't help that. I'd say he is a nice guy!

If Xbox could equal or beat PS sales in just the US and UK, I'd consider that a win for Xbox. It's not easy... they are doing a good job on messaging and hardware.

What does Halo even sell these days? Did Halo 5 do as much as 1/3 of the numbers of Halo 3?

It's certainly not the system seller it was for the 360.

If anything it's done the opposite.

With the new CPU there is allot of opportunities for real gameplay innovation that is simply impossible with Xbox Cross-Gen approach.
But there was none of it shown.
It was just more pretty then PS4 games and thats it.
It's not that hard to rival.

Yea I agree. They have to catch that 360 magic again. It'll be tough since it appears Sony isn't gonna fuck up like they did with the PS3. I also agree that MS has built an amazing console and their messaging for the most part has been great. Very excited for next gen.

All the pressure was on Microsoft regardless of anything Sony has or hasn't done. People know what to expect when it comes to sonys 1st party offerings. If you like them you can confidently buy a ps5 and continue those franchises.

With xbox they've milked the same tired franchises year after year and a lot of people lost interest. I love the Gears franchise and I haven't been able to finish 4 or 5, they just feel...meh.

Funny enough the best 1st party game I've played since launch and am still playing every now and then is Sea of Thieves.

I feel bad for 343 cause man if they fuck up Halo, whew boy. Plus they're gonna have a lot of competition come fall.

Sony did not announce the price, so it's not that much pressure. I found the presentation itself underwhelming as I think we're running up to diminishing returns in a lot of these games.

I'm not beholden to Sony anymore as MLB The Show is going multi-platform, and that's practically the only game I play anymore.

Sony didn't put all chips on the table. Price is still out, OS has not been shown, and some exclusive announcements are being held depending on what MS shows in July. False premise from the start but I understand he had to write something to keep some mindshare alive.

I don't think Sony's showing was convincing any die hard Xbox fans to not get an Xbox. In fact, I think the showing put a reality check on everyone. No secret sauce. Microsoft covers many genres and services with brio and all they need is to enter the AAA third person over the shoulder single player adventure game craze.

So hard to tell nowadays with gamepass and Microsoft hiding numbers since right before gamepass because thy were doing bad sales wise in general.

Sony had the chance to put the nail in the coffin with the show last night and they didn't.

It's the most incremental looking console upgrade so far and the strange design doesn't help either.

I feel like Microsoft have something to prove this gen and I really hope they go for it. Competition is only a good thing, especially after xbox one was DOA.

I don't think anyone should underestimate the impact of a fully next gen looking Halo. I just hope that's what we actually get.

All of Microsoft's good games to show off were made years ago they just run em a little faster. Their next console will run em a little faster. The next one will run ....

They took the box their AMD parts showed up in, painted it black, and poked holes in the top

They did their game presentation out of their own kitchens and guest rooms

They took last console's controller and popped out the old dpad and replaced it with a plastic octozoid pattern (called it an upgrade)

I really don't think Microsoft is feeling any pressure. They aren't taking this console thing very seriously at all.

someone obviously didn't watch the digital foundry Xbox reveal.

What fanboy drivel is this?
