They could but Satya Nadella has been clear, even with this announcement, that its about reaching out to all gamers. Microsoft is pivoting away from hardware platforms to selling GaaS.

According to the confirmation tweets after my post about Bethesda games, it appears that this is correct.

XBOX consoles are no longer a major focus of Microsoft, GaaS is. If Sony and Nintendo allow Gamepass, they may even stop making consoles altogether as it would no longer serve a purpose.

Wait 12-18 months. That's all I'll say. If they're singing the same tune, I'll be surprised.

I see it as Microsoft pulling Fallout and ES from the grips of despair and tossing a dotted lifeline to Bethesda in the form of Obsidian.

Having an isometric Fallout, 3D fallout and ES game made by Obsidian again? Ohhhh myyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

This is fantastic news for fans of Fallout.

For the fanboys, stop whining. You have an option to still buy games on Xbox and PC!! This is better than the option of Fallout and ES being a MTX filled shit hole.

You guys really need to go see the Outer Worlds posts and tell me thats who you want working on Fallout.

I feel the crowd who think Zenimax games are still going to launch on PlayStation are in denial. The Todd Howard quote doesn't imply that at all and an acquisition of this size seems fairly ludicrous if they're simply doing it because they want the revenue from Fallout etc. That really doesn't suit Microsoft's strategy.

Future titles will launch on PC & Xbox, they will not be on PlayStation.
People think gaming industry should be 'games everywhere, exclusives are anti-consumer' just because Phil started that idea.
He was just pushing that to fool Sony into bringing their games to PC and undermine their exclusivity and drive a wedge between PS and their strongest fans. Divide and conquer.....

Sony fell for it..... their management are not up to task. Very gullible, then charge their customers more money. It's equivalent to 95 dollars in Europe now to buy a games for PS5.

The arrogance and stupidity and the amount they took for granted over at Sony is baffling.

Better IP's and more talented. You act as if Besthda hasn't put out any quality games in years. Im sure you enjoyed Doom, Wolfenstein or Elder Scrolls in the past. Dont let the salt blind you.

More talented than Rare in their prime?

You are having a laugh.

Sony are lucky they are now making bank again because it puts them in a position to react to situations like this.
Lol Sony don’t have the money to react to purchases like this. Sony were throwing millions around on timed exclusives and marketing rights, MS just threw down $8 billion like it’s nothing - because it basically is nothing to them. All that MS warchest meme-ing for all those years? Yeh looks like it’s opening up big time. I don’t think we’ve seen the end of it either.

MS could finance a cool 75 brandnew AAA games with a 100 million dollar budget for that money. Instead they buy Bethesda, a third party developer that already made games for both Xbox and PC. So all that 7.5 billion dollar deal accomplishes is that Bethesnda games are available on Game Pass and that Sony consoles won't get future Bethesda/Zenimax games. Was that really worth so much money??

My bet is that if you'd ask Xbox gamers what they's rahter have: 75 new exclusive big budget games for their console or a dozen Bethesda games on Gamepass, they'd go for the first option.
It's not either / or. MS have the money to do both, and more besides.

Yeah, this is huge. 23 studios is INSANE.

This totally has me rethinking my next gen plans.
In the end, it's really how much those games mean to you. Personally, not a huge fan of any of them, but I know people who only play Bethesda games so to them, it's a game changer for them.

He said 'SONY'..... he didn't say the gaming division. He is wrong.

Sony made 7.7 Billion dollars operating profit last year and over 8 Billion the year before.
Mate 8 billion dollars operating profit is no small deal. But, Microsoft operating profit this year was 55 bn$.
I think for years sony Corp was losing money.

I'm not sure it is. Basically both companies are forcing players to take sides. Ultimately, it's the gamers that are missing out (unless you're buying both consoles). Imagine if both companies just carve up the top AAA game studios. How is that a good thing for players?

Just goes to show how cornered MS were though to have to pull a $7.5b acquisition out the bag.

If Sony retaliate (an acquitition of their own) things could get dirty and us gamers will simply be pawns in the mess of it all.

I would agree with you but in reality sony has so much exclusives and we need to prevent them from becoming too powerful (that's why we talk about arrogant sony). And I think Microsoft et bringing that competition with this acquisition, it's not ideal but it will benefit gamers.

I don't think it's over, either. They'll be another before the year is up, IMO.

Having read some more of this thread, is there a particular reason it seems to accepted that future titles are going to come out for PlayStation? That doesn't seem to make any sense at all.
That reason is called Minecraft.
Microsoft could make Minecraft exclusive to Xbox at any time. And they still can. But they won't, because doing so loses them money.

Bethesda purchase cost a lot of money. Money they expect to earn back. It could go either way, so my guess is that the odds are 50/50.

The problem is Xbox is not a global brand, its only US mainly. this could backfire

I said release the games on Xbox, All PC stores and Nintendo. exclude the competition which is Sony to attract more buyers to the other platforms that are not playstation. It ain't not rocket science.

Imagine if they buy EA next. At this point why not? Sony gets demolished.
That would actually be a blessing if someone who is somewhat competent would by EA. So they can fucking fire Andrew Wilson et al. and maybe we get some good EA games again.

All the people saying 'its good business' and 'its part of the inustry' etc, when all the recent rumours about Sony tapping up a lot of 3rd party games happened, i'm sure the same people will be saying the same things now right?
MS buying a publisher is the best possible outcome from someone buying them. It means all the games will be on PC and at least one console.

Sony buying them would mean they are stuck on one console. Consumers have choice with MS at least.

So is Microsoft's strategy with gamepass going to be:

Xbox/PC owners pay a sub, get games for 'free'
Sony (maybe Nintendo) owners still get games owned by Microsoft, but have to pay a premium, effectively funding GP?

This is the best news from this acquisition, I'm afraid to even think about it. While Wasteland 2 was good (didn't play third one yet), it always came of like poor man's Fallout for me.

They should merge InXile and Obsidian and give us the glory that was Interplay again. Then make them work on a isometric Fallout.

I doubt they will do shit. They have their head up their ass right now.

They hired an M&A guy and if he didn't see that Zenimax was the logical move, then they are useless.

It's my opinion Microsoft will use this acquisition and the bethesda franchises to get on the Playstation platform and potentally Gamespass as well.
