I agree that the culex ban was unwarranted, from what I've seen anyway. We need to be careful that the events that followed the 2016 election are not repeated

If you're talking about Honjo Honjo , he got banned because in that post he was basically saying that black people are inferior to white people in every aspect from architecture to dance to art to construction and design.

He could have just said the video was dumb because no one is superior to another but he, instead, basically tripled down by posting racist tropes... A ton of them... In one post.

That "The Cut: What are white people superior at?" thread was essentially bait. I'm not going to argue with the bans, except to say one thing. That thread isn't going to be the end of it. Those kinds of articles and videos are going to be pushed further and further into the mainstream. The mods here might want to sticky some kind of warning post. I don't want to lose users like JordanN JordanN or Cybrwzrd Cybrwzrd due to hasty reactionary posts.
 
I'm actually surprised that appaws appaws was banned as he's shared similar views many times before. Unlike others, he's been civil instead of delving into belligerence and name calling.

I'm disappointed in Cyber tho... That was weird, even for him.

I'm not trying to defend or justify racial supremacy. I'm just afraid with the larger racial identity movements happening in the outside world, it's going to lead to more bans of well-meaning, if uncareful, users here at GAF. I'm not a mod, or you, I don't know the exterior stresses on the system. I'm just sad when people get banned.

Also, on a side, but related, note. Being banned from GAF sucks. The community here is overall pretty great. If I were perma-banned, it would cause me some real sadness.

So am I, especially when pulling the trigger personally, but it's necessary at times to prevent the environment from degrading. Extremism and hateful rhetoric aren't going to be tolerated.

The parameters for service here are pretty reasonable. I don't think you have anything to worry about on that front unless you go overboard with a big ban bet. :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

I agree, unfortunately. Most of the world seems to be hooked to some form of "X is the promoted group; Y should be degraded" (insert relevant groups here). It's inevitable that this creates justifiable anger and internal conflict within members of a group getting bombarded with that day after day. People are going to use the anonymity of the internet to air their views when not permitted in public without life-ruining consequences.

Yeah, understandable. I don't know if I'd be willing to allow that kind of content on my site, even if it was purely unemotional scientific discussion. It's too easy to get cancelled.

I'd prefer if we had a policy of "Any topic is fair game, so long as you are civil and back up your claims". Unfortunately I don't think that can really happen on the internet these days; a site can get erased/lose it's hosting just for having wrongthink.

You know what's funny (or interesting, I don't know). I don't remember, for most of my life, thinking of myself as white. Of course I knew I was white, but it was something that just never mattered at all (and it still doesn't, to be quite frank) but nowadays, people remind you of what you look like 24/7. I don't even think I thought of myself as of belonging to a race, or anything like that, all this race talk is so exhausting and it only creates division :(

This is part of where the disconnect is, imo. I was, and am still, reminded that I'm black. I was met with being called the N-word, boy (as a grown man by an older white man in a not nice way), being told "but you're black... You should be a great athlete", being told I don't need stronger pain meds when I was clearly in a lot of pain (there's still the belief, even among medical professionals that black people have a higher tolerance for pain)...

You didn't have to think of your race like that because you didn't go through life being reminded of your race, not seeing your people represented in media (or as anything more than pimps and criminals, save for a few actors)... Yeah, no one should look to actors as heroes or something but not seeing many heroes in your favorite shows who are leaders kinda sticks with you as you grow up. You notice it more and more.

But that's besides the point. Just saying you didn't have to be reminded that you're white. And while many black folks like oagbachi probably didn't ... I did. So did many others.

Sidenote: "reminded" is being used ironically... I know I'm black but those instances were to try and belittle me. As I said before in another thread, it's why I'm not comfortable in spaces where I'm the only black person. Then again... I'm not comfortable in crowds... No matter the color .. unless I'm with close friends there.

I think any topic should be fair game. And it is. But displaying open racism should never be tolerated. From ANY race of person. Which is why what's his name was permed. Appaws has shown many times his views on black people, i.e. crime and IQ.

How can I explain this to you? Brazil is(was) a totally different beast. It was always a melting pot, a really cool place where everyone mingled. Of course racism exists here, as it exists everywhere, pretty much, but black and white people lived in harmony (99% of people is cool).

My best friend/best man of my wedding was black. He abandoned me after he got into identity politics and started to see me as a sort of enemy just because I didn't agree with his politics. The whole modern racial tensions we have here were imported from the U.S. - the whole concept of one drop rule never existed here - the vast majority people are what we call pardo (mix of black and white and maybe some indigenous people, a true mixed country), but the one drop rule was imported and people ate it up (I think it's a fucking stupid concept because if a person has white and black blood the person ain't just black, the person is mixed).

This black friend wasn't reminded that he was black by any of us at any time (maybe by other people, ok) but what I'm saying is: we should get past race, it's just a cosmetic skin, it's just skin, it's nothing else (at least to me) - I prefer to identify people as interesting or boring or as intelligent or dumb. I have 6 ethnicities even though the majority of them are White European (I have a little Mesoamerican in the mix) but I just see myself as a person, a human being first and foremost. I think Michael Jackson's message was really important - it doesn't matter if you're black or white, if you're cool you're going to be my friend. I love people and different cultures.

Our group, in my hood, growing up, had Italian, Black, Portuguese, Native, Syrian, etc. Everyone got along just fine. And now the media here is infested with North American styled Identity Politics and everyone is fighting and not getting along anymore. We had many good things to import from the U.S. but they decided only to import the rotten race theory shit.

As for the people who cursed you and did that to you, fuck them hard. Pieces of shit.

As for the part of representation in the media, I'm technically latino, so in international media we are always represented as drug dealers and stuff like that, I don't mind, I find it funny :D

That whole thread was just a mess of closet racists showing their true colors. The topic of the OP didn't even mention black people and yet someone had to go that route. I'm really surprised more of them weren't banned. I read through the ban posts last night and it really disgusted me. It makes me wonder if these people had grown up working and living with other races like I did -- how much they'd actually see of themselves. Yet, it was basically useless rhetorical arguments trying to paint the "white race" as having been hereditary or culturally more intelligent. I'm still trying to figure out what race has to do with intelligence? That thread should stand as an example of what we should strive not to be on GAF or as human beings. Just disgusting commentary for those guys.

The funny thing is that I didn't even see that thread. I only got to know about it because I saw in another thread that JordanN was banned.

But you're effectively saying "any topic should be fair game, and it is. Except race." How exactly could we have an honest discussion about race without displaying ideas that are perceived to be racist? Even the "we are all one/race doesn't exist" sentiments are themselves "racist", in that they pretend that all people are created at a 100% level playing field in life.

Well, as a society we get bombarded daily with equity metrics. I.E. "This group is 3 times more likely to have this negative thing, thus proving racism". It gets applied widely, and is largely accepted as true with little in the way of pushback. The natural counter argument would be "No, this negative thing could be accounted for via cultural practice or genetic predisposition".

That's not inherently a racist argument, even though it is usually painted that way. I have negative things that I am genetically predisposed toward, and I have negative things in my life that exist due to the culture I grew up with. That is factual, and ignoring the fact that they exist would only be to my own detriment.
