I think they tried this a few years ago with their Apple Car Play implementation, but backed off due to the bad publicity.
Surprised they're doing it again.

I imagine that in 10-20 years there will be stable open source software for these cars, just like for CFW or internet browsers or anything else, and people will be able to jailbreak them and download new features and GUI and everything.

Eh, Tesla isn't innocent. They used to let you pay a few thousand to "upgrade" your battery pack, and their autopilot system is another update to a system already built into the car.

Apple Carplay is standard on my 911. I never even bothered to use my trial for Porsche Connect. I think it just adds Google traffic updates into the Porsche nav app.

Tesla kinda does this too though, no? My friend bought a model 3, the hardware for heated seats is there in every model, but had to pay to unlock the ability to use it.

Not the same thing, because you need to add those hardware features as extras.
This is more like, imagine having electric windows and a knob, and you had to pay to use the electric otherwise you'd stick with the knob, even though your car is fully installed and capable of electric windows.

It never went away. On the Connected Drive store I see CarPlay priced at $300 for 324 mos for my M3. It's not a big deal to me since I don't have an iphone. If I really wanted it, I could just get it coded in.

Yeah, this is incorrect. The battery option upgrade is true but you're paying to upgrade your pack. It wasn't just firmware that went into that when upgrading from a 60 pack to a 75 pack.
And the autopilot that you claim they're purchasing is already installed in the vehicle is also incorrect. I can probably go into greater detail if pressed but we all do sign NDAs. But your Autopilot claim is completely incorrect.

I mean, I've been in the business for 13 years. If you want to void your warranty and get hammered with a $3K service bill when something goes wrong then that's your choice. I've also been heavily into cars for longer than that. It can go south very fast.

Full self driving is not "already built into the car". The hardware is changed, not just firmware.

People don't buy a BMW to hack it; you buy a car like that with the intention of having it serviced at the dealer only for a few years. You'd get caught the first time you brought the car in for service, and servicing it elsewhere lowers the car's value (as used buyers of these same cars expect the car to be dealer serviced.)
Maybe eventually on the used market it could get hacked, but that's some small percentage in the end... because a large amount of these cars are sold back to the dealer themselves, and then they go into "official refurbished used" programs.
It actually wouldn't shock me if you could end up paying less for that feature in the time you'd probably own the car than if you'd bought the feature. That's how they'll sell this idea.. "well if you own the car for 3 years which is your warranty time, you pay X, and the feature costs X + $500, you save!" They also might unlock it permanently once you reach the feature price... then they do the same thing to the next guy as the feature is tied to an account you have to cancel when you sell the car.

Wasn't really arguing with you. I'm all for modding. My argument was more towards the people claiming owners will jailbreak the cars to unlock those features. It's like people who jailbreak their phone and then get upset with Apple for not honoring their warranty after it breaks. I think you'll run into more situations like that.

i mean...yeah, if the car is already yours...you'are gonna be taking some features for free unless there is something somewhere in a contract that forces you to stay connected or something to their network and have penalties in failing to do so.

It's true, the more expensive the hotel the more they'll charge you for extras. Having to log into the hotels shitty web portal that probably does not work on all your devices, give them an email so they can spam you, just for 24 hours of access and pay for the privilege. I've even seen basic toiletries and even fresh towels have an additional charge on them.
Shit hotel will just have a card in the room with the wifi password.
