Report: PS3, Vita, And PSP Stores To Be Permanently Closed In A Few Months

I'm literally making a list of all the things I want to buy before they kill the PS3 Store - Legend of Dragoon, Persona 3 FES, Parasite Eve 1&2, the Fatal Frame trilogy and Xenogears are just some of them. 🤔

Any recommendations? I'm looking for hidden gems and games that did weird and original things (think of Tokyo Jungle for instance).

Any chance they'll do a big PS3 sale before shutting down? Somewhere around a snowballs chance in hell...? 🤔

Agree 100% owned one since launch, most people where not even aware it existed, pluss the stupid memory cards and 3g cellular stuff, cancelled bioshock game. shame that it was sent to die
All I remember were the crazy memory card prices. I think that killed it the most.

They took it too far thinking gamers would gleefully pay insane mem card prices. They could had reduced the price a lot, but I think what happened was the lost money selling every piece of hardware, the attach rate of games was going to be low and the last resort was to charge an arm and leg for mem cards to make back profit.

Backfired.

The Vita was honestly overpowered and overengineered. It didn't need two cameras, it didn't need a back touchscreen, and it didn't need to be halfway between the PS2 and the PS3 in terms of graphical capability. It should have been just powerful enough to run PSP emulation and widescreen PS2 ports at its screen's native resolution. All that extra horsepower didn't amount to anything.

Lame. Super lame. Wish I didn't have to spend all my stimulus like a responsible adult now. So much stuff for Vita i've been waiting on for months. Now I worry that I won't have the money to grab it before it's gone.

Alright so this started about 40 minutes or so ago. I'm gonna clock this outrage and see how long it lasts.

I'm super glad I never got sucked down the Vita rabbit hole. Been sorta wanting one for a long time but meh. I hope you're able to lock down what you want before it's gone. If not, jail break that puppy.

Assuming you can still download all the stuff you own, it seems fine to me. It was coming at some point, might as well be now. If you haven't bought the games you wanted in the last 10-15 years, you were probably never going to.

Can I redownload the games? I've bought a lot for PSP/PSVita.

Not a big deal considering I'm sure they have login and download metics for those systems and it's minuscule at best.

The problem here is all optics. Xbox pushing and enhancing old games. Sony shoving them under a rug never to be seen again.

You can buy OG Xbox games that didn't even have an online store on that console on The MS side. Don't assume the decisions Sony makes are true for the rest of the market.
They'll do it only as long as their gains (either economic or in terms of PR) outweight their costs.

The thing people tend to always forget is that keeping something online requires constant effort.

If anything, Sony being this shitty will hopefully make people understand how finicky "online services" really are.

Not exactly surprising, they havent had a sale on the ps3 store in quite some time now and its running pretty slow/clunky like they barely maintain it. Would be nice to get a final sale though, there's a lot of trilogy collections on there I don't want to spend $40 on.

And this is why I chose to go with a gaming pc instead of consoles back in 2012. With PC gaming there's always a workaround. I don't trust japanese console platform holders to care about game preservation.

I'm sure all 200 people will be outraged about this.

Nintendo had it right. Dedicated handhelds are dumb and make no sense in today's world.

And they say digital is the way to go
You clearly don't believe in generations like Sony does ;)
That's the digital way. Move people to new platforms.

Funny thing is digital was promoted as the "infinite" storefront where games (like oldies on GOG) can sit there forever for sale.

Who knew used discs being sold person to person would outlast them.
Only steam and GoG promised infinite backlogs, unless I'm mistaken. Sony implying it/talking around it with PR speak in an interview doesn't count.

Any recommendations? I'm looking for hidden gems, PS1/PS2 classics and games that did weird and original things (think of Tokyo Jungle for instance).
I'm pretty sure a lot of games (especially smaller AA ones) have already been removed from the store a long time ago.At least in the European one. Good luck though.

For PS1 classics check (if you haven't already) :
Tomba
Tomba 2
Alundra

And for small or relatively unknown/underrated digital-only PS3 ones check:
Papo & Yo
Hydrophobia
Rain
Linger in Shadows
Amy
The Undergarden
Blue Toad Murder Files
Noby Noby Boy
Dark Mist
The Last Guy

There are much more in my download list but the ones above are some of the smaller digital-only games i have installed. Not sure if they are still available though.
These are from the European store i'm sure the American one has a broader selection.

EDIT: Btw most of those games i had bought them very cheap some for even 2-3 euros. Last time i checked a lot of PS3 games were being sold at relatively very high prices in the store probably much more than they are worth it. For example i enjoyed games like Amy and Hydrophobia for the 2-3 euros i bought them but i don't think i'd recommend them for a much higher price. If they are more expensive be sure to check some videos first.

You should still have access to your digital content in the download list under your account if the PSP is anything to go by.
I meant if you got a ps3 games you never played before that requires a patch. Will they still be able to be downloaded if the store is no longer around. Not sure if they're tied to the store or PSN in general.

I have a ton of unopened ps3 games in my backlog.

Possibly. You don't need to access the store for patches. Unless the publisher decides to remove them.

Delisted games still received their patches.

Here you go baby, enjoy your digital future !
This is only the beginning.

I'm still enjoying my digital future, not sure what changes here. I can't buy new games on a dead platform?

Enjoy being buried with those plastic boxes I guess?

What the fuck. Welcome to the digital future ladies and gents. Get buying your physical DeS, Ratchet collection, Sly collection etc. now because physical prices will balloon if this is true.

And they say digital is the way to go
This is hardly a digital problem, it's simply a business decision. They don't want to spend money to maintain and account for content and keep integrating with legacy entitlement systems. It's not much different from physical stores no longer selling PS3 and Vita games today.

I also think the both of you are assuming that they won't let you download content you already own. Which Sony in the recent past has let you do with other storefronts they've shutdown.
