It's variable across cultures and eras. At the moment this sort of thing is creeping into asian cultures thanks to large scale cultural cross-pollination with the west.

i found it interesting for different cultures to share similar 'ideals'. perhaps i'm looking into one infomercial a bit too deeply but that product could easily be aimed at an english, american or western european audience too, i think. anyway, thanks for the info. !
