BREAKING: Sony is acquiring Bungie for 3.6b

What a get for Sony. Plugs their one gap, co-op centred as well as PVP - one of the best FPS games/devs on the market. Just made sense.

Agree. Bungie is IMO the best FPS creator, there with Respawn, Treyarch and now the redeemed 343 after Halo Infinite.

But...why? Are they trying to counter COD with Destiny? lmao (that's Bungie right?)

edit: 3.6b for a studio that will remain independent and release everywhere they please? what is Sony even doing? what changes? besides the fact bungie just got 3.6b, lmao. I'm so lost.

This feels like Sony trying to stick it to MS than buying it because they want it.

Regardless, this is all so dumb. I want everyone to be able to play all games on all platforms(except first party titles).

I hate this new trend.

Seriously though, is Bungie worth this much money anymore? It seems like all their heyday was in the past. I'm confused as to why they want to purchase them when they're still going to be multiplatform as well. Unless it's to head off a exclusive purchase by MS?
For Sony it's probably worth this much. They're in danger of literally having no FPS games. Counter offers probably jacked up the price.

Wow I half thought this was going to be a troll thread

Sony and Microsoft both approaching MAD for cock blocks? Probably still more in Microsoft's favor with CoD, but this might be enough for deals, especially if Microsoft gets GamePass on PS5 and Sony takes their 30% cut.

That's pretty amusing, didn't bungie leave Microsoft and then Activision as they wanted to be independent?

Wonder if they will continue to support destiny on Xbox, or if they will cut the platform off.

Edit: read the article, cool they are keeping destiny multiplatform, can imagine Phil Spencer wishes he go bungie as we know he loves destiny. Could Microsoft counter bid, like EA did to take two with codemasters?

Edit 2: turns out Microsoft turned down bungie & offered themselves for less than what Sony paid, mega surprised now.

"an independent subsidiary"

What does even mean?

If bungie have complete control and can release games where they want whats the point in sony buying them?

I dont think they will be "independent" lol sony will be in control of them.

That makes sense to me.

Basically the kind of counter move I'd expect from Sony losing CoD, also fills a big gap in their first party lineup (shooter and GaaS), and it is not that expensive either.

Also throws shade at MS in the process. I'm sure Sony is a bit different embarrassed bu recent MS acquisitions. MS losing Bungie again just throws egg back at their face

No but seriously, nice get i guess. Not sure why Bungie wants to go back to being tied again after exiting Microsoft and Activision?

Will Sony respect the Destiny userbase on Xbox?

Makes the Bethesda deal look like a bargain compared to all these recent purchase prices.

WHERES THE ORGANIC GROWTH !

On a more serious note. I don't feel Bungie is worth that much, and unless Sony gets them under good management, they'll constantly fuck up beyond belief. Yeah Destiny racked in a lot of cash, but it poisoned the well, and continued to poison it with the release of Destiny 2 and far into being independent from Activision became more scummy with monetization, and how you keep losing content on a yearly basis. PVP was a mess for years, and PVE was bogged down because most stuff got balanced around PVP.

Their work ethic is literal Bioware magic tier, and I can understand why Microsoft never went near them ever again.

is this just gonna be the great gaming landgrab where Sony and Microsoft are just going to go on spending sprees buying up whoever they can get their hands on?

Is EA next? Does anyone actually want EA?

If GamePass arrives on PS5, why would anyone buy an Xbox ? Then again MS probably doesnt care as they get their subscription.

Wow bungie must really hate ms to have gone with sony. I have to say though, are they willing to make something new? Destiny has been done to death.

Sony has said Bungie will remain a multiplatform studio, with the option "to self-publish and reach players wherever they choose to play."

So they bought Bungie as a 2nd party studio then ?

Bungie doesn't suit Sony in my eyes, I really don't think of Sony as first person shooting but I guess that's why they want them.

It does feel that way. Not saying Bungie can't do great stuff, but this looks more like saving face.

But why though? All they've done is Destiny over the past 12 years. Bungie's glory days are gone.
Think of all the games you could make with 3.6 billion dollars.

Nothing interesting to see here, the current PlayStation management is doing nonsense as always

This is what I'm wondering. To me this is akin to buying current Bioware which has no talent left. I mean, granted MS just did that with Blizzard, but they of course got the money-maker King (Candy Crush) with it along with CoD and such

So, two with a similar business understanding are coming together - one charges money for resolution upgrades and the other one removes content from their game... brilliant.

They keep rebooting and cutting 90% of their work only to re-sell it years later. Their only redeeming quality is the gunplay, the lore plus maybe the armor / weapon design, but those keep getting vaulted.
