Marathon: Will Sony back Bungie or pull the plug?

Will Sony cancel Marathon before Bungie's revised WIP release date?

People seriously forget Sony now OWNS Bungies IP. Part if the deal was if Bungie was to retain control etc they had to hit certain targets, they failed each one and as a result Sony took more and more control.
Selling Bungie would be pointless since they would lack any value besides 'talent' and say what you want but Destiny 2 has been more success than failure and 100% Sony will see the value in the potential Destiny 3.
I really cant see them selling Bungie off, downsizing and firing staff definitely and rightly so but the studio will likely remain.

They are working to remade all graphics, promo art, etc. Also a story mode and more kind of mp modes. But it could be unuseful at that point. I hope they cancel this shit, but I believe we will see soon Marathon 1.5

Too much time and money have been spent to pull the plug.

They're gonna release it no matter what.

Fact of the matter is Bungie has done this before...with the art theft. The initial interest in Marathon, if their discord is anything to go by, indicates there's still some value to be had there. I think they'll delay to next year, maybe prior to GTA 6 release. I haven't played it myself but I'm still interested. I think Sony will see it through

they will see it through , but after that sony should sell bungie
This is my views as well. I think they will see it through as it's Bungie but I think that Bungie is the biggest mistake Sony has made alongside Concord. They spend $3.6b on a company that is simply riding on their name and previous works. Bungie is a sad shell of their former self and Destiny 2 at this point is a fucking joke IMO which is sad because while Destiny wasn't what I wanted to see from Bungie I thought the game had a ton of promise but now it's a DLC/Microtransaction ridden live service game with mediocre content that they literally fucking take away from you and that new players have no chance of getting into because it's a convoluted mess with no clear progression path.

Bungie went from one of my favorite developers who developed one of my favorite franchises of all time to a laughing stock of it's former self. They took Sony for a fucking ride.

I doubt they will cancel 2 in a row. It most they will delay 6 months retool then send it out to die and try to break even.

They will see it through and when it flops Sony will finally cancel all GaaS and start making good games again like the PS1-PS4 era.... who am I kidding Marathon will flop and they'll double down and force ND Insomniac and Sucker Punch to cancel what they're doing and GaaS all the things.

I don't know shit but, I'm saying cancel.

Every internal conversation about this game's future is going to have "don't let this be another Concord" hanging over it.

I wish they'd cancel it, but I don't think they'd eat shit lying down twice like they already did with Concord.

Should they cancel it? Yeah, probably.

Will they? Probably not. I'm sure they're going to pivot and change what they can and release it as is.

Marathon: Will Sony back Bungie or pull the plug?

The question is as stupid as saying 'will Take 2 back Rockstar or pull the plug" or "will Nintendo back NPD or pull the plug"?

Bungie is Sony's top grossing first party team.

Nothing will happen, as Sony did 2370420347th times before, they gave some extra time to the devs of a project that needed it. That's all. As reference, GoWR, HFW or GT7 were also delayed. And well, Hermen Hulst allowed Helldivers 2 to have a 5 years long delay. Delays are normal and frequent in gaming because to make games it's a highly creative process in contant evolution, like its market. Which makes some things hard to predict and often their projects get changed and delayed as they keep iterating during the game's development.

I have no faith in Bungie to turn this around in less than a year. Game needs too much and not enough time

PS should takeover Bungie soon and then disband the leadership

It's probably the last chance Bungie has to prove they still got something to give. PlayStation bought Bungie to guide the GaaS effort due to "their expertise in multi platform and live service gaming", but that is pretty much done for already.

Marathon should have been a single player game with online multiplayer if they wanted to experiment with extraction shooter stuff.

Going multiplayer only was the kiss of death for this one.

After the feedback I saw from podcasters and streamers who played it, I don't think the changes they're talking about making are going to make the game successful. That type of game - even done right - just doesn't appeal to a large audience. It sounds like a not-very-good version of a niche genre game for a narrow group. The idea that Bungie can make the most successful game in that genre because they're a great developer just doesn't seem realistic to me.

For those reasons, it seems more likely they will cancel it. If Concord hadn't happened and if Fairgame$ wasn't in whatever state it's in, I would feel differently. But the Sony brass probably don't want to risk another high profile failure.

Unless they decide to reboot it and use what they've got so far to make a different style of game. That seems near impossible though.

No, the deal was:
  • Sony bougtht the 100%, so became a fully owned (so controlled) SIE subsidiary
  • Hermen Hulst and Eric Lempel (SIE's marketing head) were going to be in Bungie's board of directors since the acquisition
  • Like the rest of Sony 1st party gamedev studio, Bungie would have creative freedom
  • Following SIE's expansion to becoming more multiplatform, Sony allowed Bungie to continue releasing everything everywhere day one
  • Bungie would continue publishing using Bungie publishing label instead of SIE/PS Studios to differentiate from the console exclusive PS Studios games
  • Bungie would share their knowledge, data and expertise in GaaS areas by:
    • Sending their experts in GaaS specific areas to join the rest of GaaS experts from SIE Publishing, PS Studios and the different PS Studios teams who work in GaaS in the Sony Live Service Center of Excellence they were going to create to share knowledge, review the GaaS areas of all SIE GaaS and provide related support
    • Sending some Bungie staff related to GaaS new IP creation to 'PS Studios Creative Arts - Creative' to have there GaaS specific expertise in that support team
  • SIE / PS Studios have some central teams for many areas, as could be marketing, HR, PR, etc. covering all their teams. So there would be some Bungie staff there and other related Bungie staff fired as part of reducing redundancies
  • All these SIE/PS Studios central teams (including support ones, like the mentioned Creative) will also support Bungie's games as they do with the rest of the games
  • The team & project being incubated at Bungie would become a new PS Studios team when ready

Game companies don't cancel games because some streamer has no idea about the gaming market, game development, game design, or the normal flaws of a game when in alpha doesn't like something.

The game is tainted, it can't recover without a total rebrand. Trying to slavage it might be a noble task but I highly doubt it works.

If they keep working on it then it needs to look and feel completely different to everything we've seen.

The only way I see it bouncing back is if it looks somewhat like the original reveal.

Oh, they probably give them one more chance with their next game (and they probably shouldn't). Marathon is going to be a write off.

This delay is giving Bungie enough cord to hang themselves with. If they can't turn things around, it will be what is needed to finish off the takeover. I don't see how they aren't at least rebranded/talent gutted and repurposed. Marathon would need to release as a gigantic success, unlikely.

Personally at this point I feel like Sony is trying to setup the COMPLETE takeover of Bungie as this investment has been a HORRIFIC mistake thus far.

What better way to do that than can the game (I'm assuming incompetence gives Sony the option to completely take control)

Be real here, IF they (Sony) backed, promoted and released the absolute trash named Concord by a no name studio (that scammed them good), why they would cancel Marathon which at least has the brand recognition of Bungie, a shell of its former self, but has some weight and fans that could potentially support the game?

Given how lousy Marathon is combined with their plagiarized art since 2020, I wonder if Bungie staff still go around to Sony's first party studios acting as GAAS big shot overlords.

Imagine working as SIE staff and getting drilled by Bungie staff being told what to do, while Bungie goes down the tubes with layoffs the past years due to bad sales, Marathon is trash and they copied the art style from someone online.
