BREAKING: Sony is acquiring Bungie for 3.6b

Called it.... kind of.

I didnt call a buy out, but a partnership for Destiny needing a shooter. Was right. Bungie is a mercenary company. But didnt think they'd sell already.

Maybe Destiny 2 won't suck now. I really wanted to like Destiny 2 and gave it so many tries, but the gameplay loop or something about it just turned me off anytime i tried X_X.

I was hoping Sony would purchase Capcom or Square Enix, I did NOT expect Bungie to be on that list.

Seems like a mega smart move by Sony. The lack of a first party shooter was the hole Sony needed to plug, and they snagged one of the best available devs on the market for it at an affordable (for them) price.

Bravo.

The makers of Halo are now gonna be working on the Halo-Killer.....

So they get....one IP out of this acquisition? I guess that's a good get for them, can't say I'm a Destiny fan at all but if it makes financial sense then cool cool. Perhaps they're seeing something in the future of that studio that I'm just not capable of seeing.

Wild news though all the same, this is definitely the time of mass consolidation throughout the industry....wonder who's next. Is it Wednesday yet?

They keep rebooting and cutting 90% of their work only to re-sell it years later. Their only redeeming quality is the gunplay, the lore plus maybe the armor / weapon design, but those keep getting vaulted.
Agree.... but still Destiny gunplay is there in the top with Halo, Titanfall and Call Of Duty.

Now we are talking. This proves that they are not gonna take it lying down. Lets just hope GTA Online isnt bought by MS for $40 billion or this will be all for naught.

But this is bad for the industry lol.

The article suggests that Bungie will remain a multiplatform developer.
At-least we don't have vague statements of wanting to...having the desire to.....getting translated by different posters based on what they want to happen. :D

I'm absolutely floored that these guys got Sony to pay almost 4 bil lmao
This is affecting you more than you are letting on. You'll be OKAY — based on what is revealed, they will still have titles on other platforms.

Yes it was. The OP isn't edited at all. The forum tells you when a post is edited.
I dunno I honestly didn't see it at all. I saw the picture yeah but not the quote. all good >_>

Also. I do like your posts. I also do not shit posts lol.

I know that talking in billions is ridiculous to us mere mortals but Bethesda for twice the price of Bungie is an infinitely better deal.

Probably to do with how much money Destiny makes in MTX sales?

Bungie's successful track record in multi-format publishing and live game services will assist us in realizing our ambitions to take PlayStation beyond the console and increase our potential audience. They will remain independent and multi-platform, will enjoy creative freedom, and their track record in developing massively successful franchises in the sci-fi shooter genre will be highly complementary to SIE's own IP portfolio.

Great get. The only way to make a Halo killer is to get the Halo creators. Also great thing that the studio will keep releasing multiplatform games. The way it should be done with all big studios and previous multiplatform IPs.

3.6 billions to keep games multiplatform.

This man is a genius.
Can someone please take some tweezers out and pull that last tooth? It's bugging me. I also heard that once the final tooth gets pulled Bloodborne 2 will finally be revealed, just rumors though. but hey worth a tooth pull right? Thanks.

Get ready for the year of acquisitions.

The fps genre certainly needed a boost in Playstation but for this amount of money i would personally buy Square Enix.

$3.6B for the Destiny IP is kind of insane to me.

Bungie will remain an independent subsidiary of SIE, with its own board of directors and CEO. They state their future new IP games will not be PlayStation exclusive (at least, the ones being worked on currently...) and Destiny 2 will remain multiplatform with all their expansions through 2024 being the same. I guess that leaves room for 2025+ Destiny 2 related things to be timed exclusives for PlayStation, but they mention that they want a unified Destiny community albeit the "same great experience" doesn't exclude timed stuff.

There's no guarantee their next games will be big hits so it really is just like... a huge valuation of the Destiny brand and community. Insomniac had hardly any notable IP on their own and was acquired for peanuts in comparison. ZeniMax was twice the cost and included so much more for example, too.

Makes sense for Sony though as they do need Multiplayer stuff and this must have been a stellar price for Bungie + the added independence. I would guess Microsoft was also in the bidding war, but couldn't offer the same level of corporate freedom.

Its a big IP though. And also the are probably working on something else.
This is not Zenimax, let alone Activision but still a great get for Sony on one of its weakest areas: FPS.

But they would need to create a new game because destiny bombed hard. I mean, are you paying 3.6 billion for a bunch of people to tell them what to do? Of course not. Specially since you aren't buying slaves, those people can simply go to another company. If you pay 3.6 billion you're paying for assets which bungie has none but destiny. So Sony paid 3.6 billion for the destiny franchise, are you serious right now?

Just look at how much money Microsoft paid for Zenimax, less than double this and Zenimax owns a lot of franchises well beloved by gamers.
Define bombed hard.

That's too much money for Destiny IP unless Bungie makes something new for Sony (but even then it's still a lot for a single studio).

While I like Bungie, they are one of the most mismanaged studios in the industry. That being said, when they do perform, they perform well. Good get Sony!

1. Buying Bungie does not preclude Sony from future acquisitions.
2. Sony is buying the talents of Bungie to remedy the one huge void Sony has - FPS.
3. An acquisition of this size doesn't happen in a span of a couple weeks. It takes months to negotiate the terms, lawyers from both sides to draft/review the contract, and PR to craft the announcement.

Would be awesome if they worked on Killzone or Resistance.

But we are probably getting another 10 years of Destiny.

I am so confused. What is the point of a purchase if they are multi-platform? Oh i know. Game Pass coming to PS and God of War Ragnarok coming to Game Pass which means its coming to Xbox! Everyone Wins :P
