BREAKING: Sony is acquiring Bungie for 3.6b

I said when microsoft brought Activision that Sony's weak point atm was shooters, I never expected them to buy bungie though. Crazy times we live in.

Why people doesn't understand this acquisition?

Sony was starving for fps and now you have the second\third most important fps franchise after cod\battlefield, sony shareholders here on gaf must be pretty happy with this.

They literally bough what they were missing and maybe destiny 3 is gonna finally have decent writing\plot\graphic for once.

Not sure if i personally care for bungie but the acquisition make all the sense in the world.

My best guess is this is a desperate atempt at not letting MS buy Bungie. The price must have been set "low" if they could stay multiplatform.

If Sony loses the console war most of their revenue, goes alongside it, right?

Jimbo "true saviour of gaming" Jeebus DoB: 01/31/2022.
Kinda obvious that only Destiny 2 will remain multiplat

How old are you people here? You got to be joking right?

Bungie made halo the good ones in the mc collection.
Also they are a huge studio.
Destiny was a huge fps game, not just some mmo.

Why throwing shade? You don't like them?

This was a wise purchase. FPS area lacking.
Back in the day Sony was said to be lacking a halo killer, so they go and get the people who made halo. Its a big deal.

you realise basically none of the halo people are even still there right?

At-least we don't have vague statements of wanting to...having the desire to.....getting translated by different posters based on what they want to happen. :D

This is affecting you more than you are letting on. You'll be OKAY — based on what is revealed, they will still have titles on other platforms.

I just finished up a couple games of their most Important IP @ 120fps on series X. I think I'm good.

The real question is if this is just the beginning and more acquisitions are being attempted/planned as we speak.
Unfortunately consolidation is not gonna stop here.
Btw quite the irony that the Halo creator once owned by MS is now in Sony's hands.

Holy shit people are interpreting this acquisition in either two ways

1. Bungie remains multiplatform as a independent developer (which is how I have read the articles).

Or

2. Bungie honours contracts and then exclusive to PS / PC.

I mean its quite obvious at this point that Sony is working on a Gamepass like service that will be available for PC and potentially mobile devices as well.

Edit: For all the critics I made to Jimbo... I have to say he is redeeming himself. This is a brave step forward IMO.

Ok armchair accountants who grilled MS buying Bethesda and Activision, now do your bean counting and profitability analysis on a company at $3.6 billion whose last game was Destiny 2 about 5 years ago.

1. Buying Bungie does not preclude Sony from future acquisitions.
2. Sony is buying the talents of Bungie to remedy the one huge void Sony has - FPS.
3. An acquisition of this size doesn't happen in a span of a couple weeks. It takes months to negotiate the terms, lawyers from both sides to draft/review the contract, and PR to craft the announcement.
Honestly I don't think it's a coincidence. Probably they already heard some rumours about the Activision acquisition from awhile.

Console war is becoming a Cold War. Mutual assured destruction if either one decides to make a major multi platform game exclusive. War has changed.

Yes....they bought bungie....to make....multiplatform games.....

I own everything and will always own everything. ps5, series x, switch, custom built pc, soon a steam deck.

This is ridiculous though. And yet I have not played a good next gen game on my PS5 or series X yet. Hoping Dying Light 2 will be the first.

Bungy just has Destiny and its nothing great. This does not move the needle. Get the NFL license away from EA. Make a amazing NFL game. Just my opinon.

To be honest I'd have preferred if they had bought Capcom, Square Enix or even Atlus.

I don't really get why they'd buy Bungie. Perhaps so that Microsoft couldn't gobble them up too?

Finally someone with a brain in this thread. That's all that needs to be said about this topic.

This is actually a brilliant move! :)

All the best FPS games got gobbled up by Xbox; Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake, Call of Duty and of course they got Halo.
Playstation had.. Killzone and Resistance.. :lollipop_Mr_Smith: both in cryo.

Bungie will fit that hole perfectly

As a green rat I guess I'm supposed to say 'nobody cares about Bungie so meh' but this is a good get for Sony. Despite the shit monetisation of Destiny (the reason I dropped it) Bungie really are masters of console gunplay fun, and there's a Bungie sized hole for them to fill at Sony. GG.

Seriously, 7.5b feels like a steal considering all the studios versus just Bungie.
That's not how these things are priced. There are other factors that affect the price also like revenue. For example, Bethesda revenue for 2020 as a whole was ~5.5 Billion. Bungie is privately owned so they don't have to release their financial reports but it was estimated to be 2 Billion. They are much smaller than Bethesda but make a lot of revenue in comparison.

It means that Sony was desperate to make a counterpunch to Microsoft. Approached Bungie since this would hurt symbolically, but Bungie had some serious conditions. Jim being desperate, agreed to said conditions.

Bungie's world-class expertise in multi-platform development and live game services will help us deliver on our vision of expanding PlayStation to hundreds of millions of gamers. Bungie is a great innovator and has developed incredible proprietary tools that will help PlayStation Studios achieve new heights under Hermen Hulst's leadership.

Bungie makes games with outstanding technology that are enormously fun to play. They also have unmatched dedication to the communities that play their games, and everyone at PlayStation, and PlayStation Studios, will be excited about what we can share and learn from them.

I did told they were betting on first person shooters… Sony been lacking on that!

Its not so much about FPS, especially if theyre staying multiplatform. Its more about Sony not having an MMO style game that continuously brings in money via expansions, costume packs, weapons, loot boxes and the such. This will presumably generate money for them in the long run assuming Destiny and anything else bungie assumely produces as an MMO.

You... you know Bungie* "Created" Halo right? The good one? Halo 1,2,3, etc.

*about as relevant as "Retro studio made Metroid Prime" nowadays, as in, that pool of creators left a long long time ago. 21 years, 21 freaking years, no studio remain the same for that long.

Talking Points Update:
  • Monopolies are not bad now. Organic growth isn't a big deal, the landscape changed.
  • Destiny sucks and Bungie hasn't made anything good in 40 years except Halo and Destiny. They're not even the same company.

Sony likely trying to secure some big IP of its own. As long as Bungie is turning a profit as is, than there is profit to be made by buying it with no changes. It is not the smartest move to be declaring such thing, IMO. Doesn't seem to elevate Sony's position at all, especially if Sony holds their line of no day one games on a subscription service.

At least with Activision, CoD on GP is still an advantage even if that IP stays multi-plat. Plus, MS can still pick around the edges and get some additional exclusive content with the smaller/dormant IPs.

Bungie sucks now and this will only incentivize Microsoft to make more of its games exclusives. Sony thinking this will be some kind of bargaining chip for future negotiations is laughable. This isn't the early 2000s. Bungie isn't king of anything.
