BREAKING: Sony is acquiring Bungie for 3.6b

But there again there was a seemingly clear goal with regards to big money-makers that are currently generating massive revenues they could control. Bungie just has what, Destiny? Does that make money? I mean, I guess Sony thinks they maybe can do something with them, but it seems like a big gamble otherwise.

I think ALL of these purchases are gambles. Nothing is guaranteed. But Sony will NEED Bungie to make a PS5\PC game that's a hit within the next 3 years though.

The guys that made Halo when it used to be good?

No Way What GIF

And what does that make 343?
343 has a lot of original creators on their team and Certain Affinity was created by Halo veterans. They do a lot of work together. Bungie, has some Halo developers, but not many. Ironically, Certain Affinity also works on Call of Duty as well.

I did read alot of technical problems about destiny. I very much dislike destiny because of everything they do. Loot chase is to big for me and not entertaining. Shooting felt good in D1 Beta, played like 20 hours in beta ... when i realised the level design or world design i quit. Thought it was more of a MMO then an instanced thing.

But Sony got the best tech in the buisness. If they help Bungie out on that front maybe they can create something really big. 3.6b is extremly much. If they make 50$ a game thats 72 million copies sold. And the development costs arent even calculated in.

Not sure about this ...

Are you fucking kidding me?

Well people wanted a big fps on playstation, there you have it.

this could have been square or capcom or konami instead...

Edit: so now M own crash bandicoor and spyro and Sony own the creators of halo, you can't make this shit up.
They have about 18 billion for acquisitions this year so any of those is still an option.

Zenimax has loads of ips bruh
Yeah that's my point. Zenimax "only" 7 billion, the only game Bungie has is Destiny... Does Destiny generate that much money then? Or are prices just crazy at the moment and Bungie was smart enough to play this to their advantage.

People are so focused on consoles that they never stop to think both Sony and MS are doing the same thing...in different ways: They both want people to enjoy their games without the need of their consoles. Bungie was a good get for that, for sure.

what? lol, Sony never wanted that, they were hoping to get to Apple Level walled garden and fuck anyone outside of it. Just recently they were blocking cross platform play.

They've been playing catch up with MS strategy for years... and sucking at it. They may be the market leader for now, but they know soon enough GP will be everywhere and they need to do something about it.

To me Classic Bungie > Everything else Microsoft has acquired since they originally acquired Bungie.

The new Bungie sucks, but if they were to make a new Marathon game, I would buy it day one.

This just seems like desperation on Sony's part. It isn't 2014 anymore.

I love the PS5 and I'm excited about the exclusives. Sony were always about having unique, beautiful looking first party games. But now they're trying to compete with Microsoft and it's never going to end well.

Unless Bungie/PlayStation have a brand new FPS lined up? Hopefully not another boring ass looter shooter.

That's not how these things are priced. There are other factors that affect the price also like revenue. For example, Bethesda revenue for 2020 as a whole was ~5.5 Billion. Bungie is privately owned so they don't have to release their financial reports but it was estimated to be 2 Billion. They are much smaller than Bethesda but make a lot of revenue in comparison.
source? trying to just figure it out. I also am interested in profitability.

I think the other thing that's interesting is that IP-wise, think Bethesda easily beats Bungie.

Imagine spending half of a Bethesda on a studio that has never delivered since going independent. Bungie keeps riding their Halo wave without delivering anything since then. They're the Al Bundy of game studios.

Sony might be the King of Single player.

But their multiplayer games really lack. I guess this move makes perfect sense.

I dont even know what their biggest multiplayer game is LittleBigPlanet?

i mean it specifically say they retain freedom in the destiny IP, i take that as to say future destiny games will be multiplat, but anything else they make will be sony exclusive

There's Capcom for 6-billions with IPs like Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Marvel vs Capcom, Devil May Cry, Mega Man, Dragon's Dogma, Lost Planet, Ghost n Goblin

....and Jim Ryan chose Bungie with one mediocre IP for 3.6B?!?!?!....this guy is so stupid!!

I am pretty sure that in any deal Capcom would want more than whatever investors currently consider their value to be. They also seem like the kind of third party studio that isn't looking to be bought out.

They have about 18 billion for acquisitions this year so any of those is still an option.
Yeah i don't know, bungie seems alread a pretty big move.
Even if they have that budget i'm not sure if they are gonna spend all of it just because they can.

Dude, it is not really an arms race, if sony wasn't a japanese company, M could acquire them tomorrow morning during the cafe pause...
You can't buy a company not for sale. Remember MS tried to buy epic and Nintendo and they told them where to stick it.

The real question is if this is just the beginning and more acquisitions are being attempted/planned as we speak.
Unfortunately consolidation is not gonna stop here.
Btw quite the irony that the Halo creator once owned by MS is now in Sony's hands.
yeah i mentioned to my mates

sony's owns the og devs of halo
ms owns the og devs of crash

Only destiny 2, new games are gonna be exclusive, exactly like cod after 2023.

If not, then they just chose a different way comapred to M that is happy to renounce at 70 dollars per copy just to attract people on gamepass.

They are still gonna make a fuckload of money with bungie games, and since people in here defend stuff that only a shereholder can defend (coff crossgen games coff) i don't see why the negativity.

The deal specifically speaks of future titles as well. this deal was pointless in hindsight

What I will say, with no salt intended, is that it makes me laugh how Bungie go from one abusive relationship to the next. Make your fucking mind up, do you wanna be independent or not? But I do hope this one turns out good for them.

Could be a pretty good get in the future, but from where we sit currently, I feel like acquiring a different dev could've been more of a good get.

The Destiny community is big enough to sustain itself, but I don't think the get is THAT great. But I look forward to seeing what comes from this in the future.

They buy Bungie by itself for almost half of what Microsoft got Bethesda for!? And Bungie is remaining a multi-platform studio, able to publish games wherever they want? A totally independent subsidiary?

Think about everything Microsoft got with the Bethesda deal... I don't even need to mention it. This deal doesn't make sense guys. My opinion is either Sony is going to match Game Pass with day one releases into their sub service and/or sony is going to be purchased by a bigger company, and is simply snatching up important pieces in advance of that acquisition. May not happen now, but Apple or Amazon will end up buying Sony. Someone is getting them. I lean Apple.

Symbolically there's major significance to this because of who Bungie is and what they meant to Xbox, but where is the value here if they won't even be exclusive to Sony and Playstation? As it is Destiny never grabbed my interest enough for me to actually ever play it, but Bungie is a super talented studio to add to their talent pool, no doubt about it. Sony is banking on whatever Bungie is cooking up to hopefully be the next big thing. This tells you Sony fears that Activision purchase, but are fighting the best way they can. They want to have a shooter ready that can go up against Call of Duty, and while Bungie hasn't made something as compelling as Halo to me since, that doesn't mean they can't. I know they can. And they easily have the talent to build a game that competes with COD. But how will the casual crowd respond to it?

Jim Ryan just said the words "realizing our ambitions to take PlayStation beyond the console and increase our potential audience." They're heading in the direction Microsoft is. :)

Yeah that's my point. Zenimax "only" 7 billion, the only game Bungie has is Destiny... Does Destiny generate that much money then? Or are prices just crazy at the moment and Bungie was smart enough to play this to there advantage.
They seem to be a good studio. That's the take away from this

I kind of knew it! ( I didn't of course, not really). It just made too much sense for your "popular multiplayer but cheaper" side. Also, that one commenter in NG account was damn right about Hulst working on buying big developer, but not a publisher.
