BREAKING: Sony is acquiring Bungie for 3.6b

That seems really steep considering how much MS paid for all of Zenimax…

Not really

Different objectives

Destiny is a far bigger cash cow than almost all Zenimax properties collectively

Sony lost CoD, needs to provide leverage against MS for keeping CoD multiplatform, needs to keep PS plus subs, has a huge hole in their studios for both a shooter and a GaaS franchise

It makes sense for Sony

Bethesda is a huge amount of studios, employees to pay and manage. Microsoft needed the studios, Sony doesn't.

You can't buy a company not for sale. Remember MS tried to buy epic and Nintendo and they told them where to stick it.
Ok wrong example, but they have the money to buy sony, sony doesn't have the money to buy M (and faaaaaaaaaaaaar less money in general).

Last major FPS studio/franchise on the market? If there was a pool of 100 studios then Sony could have dictated a price. This was basically last chance saloon for Sony, which drives the price up. Even games like Halo struggle to retain mindshare from CoD. Killzone, Resistance, SOCOM? Forget about it, they'd flounder embarrassingly. Sony would have been desperate to get this done.
Lol putting killzone, resistance and socom in the same company as halo and cod.

Those sony shooters are not in the same league as those two.

I own everything and will always own everything. ps5, series x, switch, custom built pc, soon a steam deck.

This is ridiculous though. And yet I have not played a good next gen game on my PS5 or series X yet. Hoping Dying Light 2 will be the first.

Bungy just has Destiny and its nothing great. This does not move the needle. Get the NFL license away from EA. Make a amazing NFL game. Just my opinon.
Destiny is actually pretty great.

It's on now

No but seriously, nice get i guess. Not sure why Bungie wants to go back to being tied again after exiting Microsoft and Activision?

Will Sony respect the Destiny userbase on Xbox?

Makes the Bethesda deal look like a bargain compared to all these recent purchase prices.
Everyone has a price, and $3.6 billion is hard to say no to.

Especially if they are giving them as much independence as they are claiming. If anything, it's hard to see what Sony gets out of this that is worth 3.6 bil.

There's Capcom for 6-billions with IPs like Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Marvel vs Capcom, Devil May Cry, Mega Man, Dragon's Dogma, Lost Planet, Ghost n Goblin

....and Jim Ryan chose Bungie with one mediocre IP for 3.6B?!?!?!....this guy is so stupid!!
Capcom is owned by the Tsujimoto family... It's probably really hard to buy them.

Anyway... Bungie...

Hot take: people said M$ overpaid for zenimax, but after this, can you really say that?

Anyways I like Bungie, their games
have some of the best gunplay, so it's a good get, money is relative, in a few years Bungie could be worth a lot more so what we know right?
Or maybe, maybe eh, Sony can allow to spend such money just for Bungie?

Its the same bull MS was doing, you're right on the money - they're just talking about Destiny 2.

Yeah, old games. But destiny 3, new I.p I think will be PS5 + PC only.

Spending billions on companies is not the move u do in the name of co operation.

LOL at people who think Sony started and finished this acquisition in just two weeks in response to the Activision blizzard deal.
I wouldn't assume this was not reactionary, because that assumes Sony did not know of Activision being shopped before it was sold.

I dont buy all this multiplatform nicey nicey talk.

They are competitors. They both want the same pie, there is going to be blood.

There is always that possibility that multi-platform is PS5, PC, and Mobile via streaming in this context. I wouldn't read much into it until actual releases happen. Just like with Activision, where continued multi-platform support is implied, yet specific years and projects are still referenced directly which could be telling.

Wow me in 2007 would have lost it over this. Crazy. Oh well. I liked Destiny alright but not losing sleep over it. Haven't seriously played Destiny in a long time.

Ok wrong example, but they have the money to buy sony, sony doesn't have the money to buy M (and faaaaaaaaaaaaar less money in general).
And? I don't see your point? My dad can beat up your dad? MS's money doesn't primarily come from their gaming division. Like, say Nintendo. Sony also has other divisions but their gaming division is a massive part.

This just in Sony to buy 3d Realms for 6billion. LOL
If they do, i just want them to bring back the cancelled prey 2 from 2011, that shit still looks so cool

Edit: call it something else, remove plot refferences to the first pray, but keep the concept

Okay, so they ARE going PlayStation exclusive. The language used is specific to Destiny universe alone. Future games clearly are going to be Playstation exclusive.
Jim Ryan said this is their opportunity to expand beyond the console, so I don't think Playstation exclusives are in the cards.

Source: https://blog.playstation.com/2022/01/31/bungie-is-joining-playstation/

Bungie's world-class expertise in multi-platform development and live game services will help us deliver on our vision of expanding PlayStation to hundreds of millions of gamers. Bungie is a great innovator and has developed incredible proprietary tools that will help PlayStation Studios achieve new heights under Hermen Hulst's leadership.

Bungie makes games with outstanding technology that are enormously fun to play. They also have unmatched dedication to the communities that play their games, and everyone at PlayStation, and PlayStation Studios, will be excited about what we can share and learn from them.

Oof.

Personally don't give a shit about Destiny, but interested in what could come in the future. I also didn't realize how big Bungie is with about 600 employees (in 2019).

source? trying to just figure it out. I also am interested in profitability.

I think the other thing that's interesting is that IP-wise, think Bethesda easily beats Bungie.

I dont know enough, but Betheseda is a publisher, with multiple studios under their belt (and many not) with presumably many more employees.

Also, Bungie's one game likely continues to bring in revenue. Sony needs a game like that...while their single player games bring in large sums...they pretty much stop after a year. They want to join the MMO revenue stream and this is likely far easier than creating their own and hoping that it takes.
