I love how this is a solution to a problem nobody asked for.

Short distance : rifle
Medium distance: sniper rifle
Long distance: cruise missile
 
When we solve the problem of smaller, higher capacity, more efficient batteries, this type of thing becomes a lot more viable.

Still a neat proof of concept. I put it up there with that plasma lightsaber that those other dudes made.

higher capacity batteries can provide a stronger magnetic field, which in turn allows smaller bullets to do the same damage
the gun robocop had comes to mind, it must have had like a few hundred round magazine

These sorts of things are small scale toys. The real things are predicted to be attached to navy ships and throw heavy shells at hypersonic speeds.

This is a consumer product, not a military weapon.

If you mean the awesome rail guns on those stealth destroyers, I thought the main concern was that they tend to destroy their barrels after only a few rounds.

The main concerns seem to be the cost of the whole project, including upgrading the power plants on ships. They would much rather develop conventional/chemical hypersonic rounds for the purpose of shooting down missiles.

Huh. That is pretty cool. Of course it fires at less than the velocity of a well-tuned airsoft rifle, but the energy would be higher due to the heavier slugs.

If I'm doing my calcs right, it's about 14J?, which is around the ballpark of a paintball round? Or maybe like 3x a .32 airsoft bb. A 556 round is in the 1700-1800J range.

Not a lot of stopping power, but I'd still prefer not to be shot by it.

Amusingly, previous to C-21, it would likely have been legal in Canada (and actually might still be, since it doesn't look like an existing RS firearm).

Yeah, these are more proof of concept, early adopter and developmental products than final items. I'm sure as the tech gets better they'll be able to get the muzzle velocity up, but this is more for making fun things to use at the range.

I'm sure the ATF becomes interested in one's location beyond a certain energy limit.
 
Sorry I haven't kept up with this stuff. Why is the muzzle velocity so slow, is it a legal thing? Supercapacitors that fit a gun should be enough for 30 kilojoules, or for 30 projectiles at 1000 joule (rough handwavy math using 5–8 Wh/kg, 10 Wh/liter). That's enough for one magazine.

I believe the limitation is synchronizing the discharge of each successive coil.

Up here the method of propulsion doesn't matter (the "fire" part has nothing to do with it)
Thankfully Congress defined what a firearm is. It doesn't include black powder guns, either.
