God of War Ragnarok has done the impossible. It's arrived and matched the astronomically high scores of God of War 2018, a 94 on Metacritic, rarified air in the video game space, where only a few series have ever reached.

Microsoft's Xbox, which excelling in the subscription value space with Xbox Game Pass, still has yet to not just match this, but really even start attempting to match this. They went an entire generation without many meaningful exclusive titles, and I'd argue none on the level of Sony's offerings. The best exclusives for Xbox across two generations now have been Forza titles, and those are heavily reliant on players liking the racing genre in the first place.

Microsoft clearly recognized this was a problem, and starting buying up studios left and right in order to produce hits like Sony. This is not a dunk, Microsoft has literally stated many, many times that they know this is a shortcoming with Xbox, and they are taking steps to correct that.

The problem is that this is…not going very well so far.

Good to finally see Western media speaking up about the lack of great games on Microsoft's end.

People really need to speak up about this shit more

if you want xbox to have exclusives you cant just let the PS fans say it. We have to put them on blast and shine a flashlight on their embarassing exclusive output, get mainstream outlets like polygon to say it
its the only way they'll actually listen. they don't care about sales or revenue so we have to express our disappointment in the most loud way

Yeah, we need more articles like this. Going an entire generation without any GOTY contenders is one thing, but to start off so poorly is simply unacceptable.

GOW came out in April 2018 when they went out and acquired Ninja Theory, Obsidian, Playground Games, and that State of Decay studio. They had also started initiative around that time. Sony managed to produce a GOTY caliber sequel in 4.5 years since while those Xbox studios are sitting there twiddling their thumbs. PG inexplicably made another Forza Horizon game in the meantime.

The NY Yankees just got swept like bitches in the ALCS. Their owner threw his full support behind the manager and GM almost immediately. Basically absolving them of any blame, and telling the fanbase they are not changing anything. Microsoft has done the same thing over the last 9 years keeping the same management that has consistently failed to deliver. Doing the same thing over and over again expecting things to change is the definition of insanity.

The whole "MS has no games" talk died last year when they had 3 GOTY quality games. This year was dry for them and Sony hit it out of the park as a publisher, but given the schedule of Xbox games we don't need to compare them on a "X has no games, X is better" due to the fact they're both operating in their own way atm. Also it discredits smaller published games. Gaming media is very bias towards AAA games only. Pentiment is due in a week, grounded got a full release. Not to compare it directly to games like GOW, but if you don't release a massive AAA game it's almost as if it doesn't count. Terrible mentality for the indie space which leads the industry in innovation.

matt booty is a fitting name since his game management is nothing short of absolute bootycheeks
but hey, they're all coming next year.... or the year after that when the delays hit because MS studios take forever to produce 1 single fucking game

Yep, despite the gigantic number of studios they have the output of Xbox first party for the first 2 years of the generation has been utterly pathetic (although I think the output of Sony studios is really not very good either, with very pedestrian and safe releases outside of Returnal : that's not much)

no it died last year and got revived the moment january 1st of this year hit. Turns out you can't just drop 3 titles in 1 year and then say "yeahh we have games now!!!"
having games means having a steady slow of at the very least, good games coming out that are exclusive to your console/ecosystem. Something Sony and Nintendo have been doing for the past 5 years.

Even Sega who got kicked out of the console market for their ineptitude at least had a steady stream of saturn and Dreamcast titles coming along... isn't the xbox supposed to be like the sequel to the dreamcast? this isn't givin them a good look

This is not wrong. If deathloop had been exclusive that would at least count for something from MS - but it was even ps5 exclusive at first. Sony owns the singleplayer exclusive space easily

That said. Microsoft IS way ahead in service and multiplayer titles with Minecraft, Forza, Groundef, Sea of thieves, Halo (in a year maybe?) etc

Bethesda with Starfield/Es and a new id software/machine games/arkane title are the only competition I see personally

Seems the author is playing it both ways IMO. Perhaps he will do a follow-up that explains why he feels they excel in the subscription value proposition despite his position that:

"They went an entire generation without many meaningful exclusive titles, and I'd argue none on the level of Sony's offerings. The best exclusives for Xbox across two generations now have been Forza titles, and those are heavily reliant on players liking the racing genre in the first place."

That's pretty harsh criticism against the games that he still feels make an excellent value proposition.

It's clear that this year belongs to PlayStation. Last year belonged to Xbox. Next year is going to be interesting.

Just buy both consoles and then you don't have to waste time writing pointless articles.

This reads like Tassi's attempt at getting referenced in Microsoft's documents to the CMA in the same way that Warren did.

But in all seriousness, nothing will change regardless of their number of studios unless they learn how to manage them appropriately. Will be a shame if they end up acquiring everything only to have the same issues, they will just destroy the industry on their way out.

Grossly overrated they can not have a hit the rest of the decade it wouldnt matter to me. Theres too many games to play and everyone already complains about their backlog. Not even sony or nintendo people buy/play every banger they release.

I actually saw this AAA "drought" coming from a mile with Microsoft when they didn't even have a first party launch title ready for launch. Even the XBOX One as much as people complain about it had first party exclusives at launch. Also, they think raising the price of Gamepass and possibly even the console is a good idea?

whats worse- it wont get much better in next 3-4years- before they release all bethesda and activition games as exclusives

What's misleading is that Sony games are one and done while MS big games typically have a lot of content.

I do agree that this year was bad regarding AAA exclusives though. They have to absolutely knock it out of the park ala PS2 2001 to cpensate.

Dead Rising 3 and Ryse, I know they weren't received that well critically but I thought they were solid offerings. Ryse's visuals were decent for the time too.

Not long after Sunset Overdrive which I friggin love.

Nah, that is true for some games not all. Pretty much all their big games either have expansions, free DLC/updates or a shit ton of content already.

Whenever someone posts a Forbes article, instead of putting [Forbes] in the title, it should just say [Paul Tassi] because I'm pretty sure he writes every single gaming article for that publication.

Was this article even necessary, other than fanboys material source?
its necessary because we need MS's lack of games to be put on blast. MS needs to realize that not everyone wants to wait till next year... and then the year after that.

they don't need activision, bethesda is enough. What they do need is to fire matt booty and a severe rewrite of management

Tell us something new....it's been pretty obvious big first party has been poor. Surprised it still hasn't been corrected after multiple developer purchases from 2018.

Just wait until next E3, they just won Publisher of the Year, Microsoft Flight Sim in the only true next gen game so far... etc.
"just wait until next year" could be their slogan.

MS started this acquisition spree in 2017 or 2018. How many of those studios from back then have been releasing stuff?

In 2018 Insomniac released Spider-Man and was acquired. Then released 3 DLCs, last one releasing in 2019.
In 2020 released Miles Morales and a PS5 remaster of the 2018 title.
In 2021 Ratchet is released.
Spider-Man 2 has a 2023 release date and Wolverine around 2024.

This is a single studio sony acquired in 2018.

Clearly MS has the money but the problems they had, they still can't solve them.

Not sure if it's lack of support studios or whatever but the fact they released their last huge AAA title a year ago…a live service game that's dying as we speak and people will have to wait 6 more months at least for their next game…something doesn't add up. As we speak and without Activision Xbox has mire studios than Sony…were all if them on a vacation before their acquisitions?

i know people are sick of waiting, and exclusives wise its been an abysmal first two years for the console.

good thing is this time there is actually light at end of tunnel, fingers crossed
